Lucie was pretty good and very nice for the 10 mins I heard of her. she had to leave because she's part of the opening ceremony but we'll hear more from her later and the rest of the week

WTA finals is a good way to think back how long one has followed WTA.
For me I have the followed this event while it was held in Madrid, Doha, Istanbul, Singapore, Shenzhen, Guadalajara, Fort Worth, Cancun and now Riyadh. |

not really sure why Garbine is tournament director, maybe because she won the Finals in Guadalajara in 2021
|
|
By:
If Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Jasmine Paolini, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, Zheng Qinwen or Barbora Krejcikova can hoist the trophy at the end without losing a match, the undefeated champion will receive over $5m (£3.8m) — more than any of the Grand Slam tournaments.

|
By:
must be easy to be tournament director for this tournament. you don't have to worry about withdrawals, weather, schedule or anything really. Some ex-players make great tournament directors, and I don't really have an opinion on Garbine yet, but it does feel she was given the job because she won in 2021. And maybe the prince has the hots for her.

Serving as tournament director for the Tour Finals is a little different than it is for other tournaments, where solving the scheduling puzzle for hundreds of matches can be a massive challenge. At the Tour Finals, which includes only the top eight players and doubles teams, the schedule is set ahead of time and everyone plays on the same court, which is indoors, so the weather won’t wreak havoc with it.
That has allowed Muguruza to delve into the more mundane aspects of the job: making sure the tournament has chosen the right sort of high-end hotel, that the food is premium quality, that the locker rooms are well-appointed, that the warm-up areas and gyms meet with professional standards. The practice courts in Riyadh are of high quality. The stadium befits a large event and the players have individual locker rooms with decals of them in full flight on the walls. Top doubles player Ellen Perez posted an admiring Instagram story of the breakfast spread, which she described as the “best I’ve ever seen” at an event. |

can you try to list one or two things that sticks out from the tournaments you have watched.
for me: Spoiler: Show 2007: Masha and Henin playing a really long match 2008: Williams sisters met in the finals (I think) 2009: Caro cramping against Vera, the Caro and Vika video where they call themselves a pusher and ballbasher, Ula and Aga in the crowd dancing to Poker Face 2010: Dementieva's farewell 2011: Vika trying to tank against Bartoli, but Bartoli was too bad to take advantage 2012: Serena having a muggy match against JJ, Masha shouting RUN RUN RUN to Aga. 2013: Kerber GATE to get her into the tournament, phorum having fun with Onbes onbes 2014: Schemona 2015: Flavia's farewell, but I don't really remember anything else. 2016: Pome won, that's all 2017: blank 2018: blank 2019: lots of retirements, the next big things (Barty, Bianca, Naomi) and then they either got injured, pregnant or stopped playing 2020: NOT HELD 2021: Garbine and Anett GOATing. Excellent crowds at Guadalajara. 2022: Ons scaring Iga. Bad crowds. 2023: WINDY CANCUN Needless to say, the Shenzhen era wasn't very memorable. I might have the wrong years for some of these. |

you have a good memory, I don't remember much about many of them. I followed tennis casually for a long time but the first time I properly followed a WTA Tour Finals was 2014 I think

random stuff I remember:
2014 when Halep beat Serena on the group but refused to tank to ensure Serena's elimination and the inevitable happening with Serena bashing her up in the final Svitolina won a Tour Finals sometime. technically her biggest tournament win Garbine stopping Anett's streak in 2021 Fort Worth edition was terrible in 2022 with abysmal crowds Cancun edition was even more abysmal than 2023 with the makeshift court with the random bounces, the crazy windy conditions and the constant rain interruptions |
|
By:
even more abysmal than 2022*
|
|
By:
yeah, we have the same memories from 21-23 editions
Svito was one of the Shenzhen years. |
|
By:
Anett went 28-2 in the 30 matches before that final.
|
|
By:
remember when they put a tournament in Tallinn to capitalize on Anett's success!
And then look who was there to spoil the party. 26‑Sep‑2022 Tallinn Hard F 4 27 (7)Barbora Krejcikova [CZE] d. (1)Kontaveit 6-2 6-3 (ch) |

should the WTA go back to this format for the WTA finals? I like round robins in theory, but rarely do we get those exciting last rounds like we often get in football.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Chase_Championships_–_Singles So knockout format. Schedule could be: Monday 4 R16 matches (two on day session, two on night session) Tuesday 4 R16 matches (two on day session, two on night session) Wednesday 4 QF's (one day session, one night session) Thursday 4 QF's (one day session, one night session) Friday rest Saturday 2 SF's (day session) Sunday F (night) Better than what we have now? For this year we would have: Sabalenka vs Mirra Emma N vs Dasha K Rybakina vs BK Paolini vs Kalinskaya Coco vs Shnaider Jess vs Paula Zheng vs Danielle Iga vs Osty 15 matches overall, just like now. But no dead rubbers. And unlike in Slams where draws will fall apart, barring injuries we'd have the top 16 in R16. But no guaranteed 3 matches for the players obviously. |
|
By:
I like this idea^. the depth is there in the top 20 for this to work imo, and it would freshen things up. also eliminates dead rubbers like you pointed out
|
|
By:
Mirra likes the idea too this year because it would have earned her money.
In the fiture she'd probably dislike it as it makes her have to share the prize pool with more players. |
