NEW: Sunday 22 March update of our coronavirus mortality trajectories tracker

• US has recorded 100 deaths *so far* since Saturday — already its highest daily total
UK & US well beyond death tolls when many countries locked down

Can Trump lock down the entire country or is it up to governors of respective states?
UK should have locked down already.

what's the point of shutting down everything that generates money, and damage the economy, but then allow people to flock in parks and at beaches so the virus keep spreading anyway?

yesterday's press release/info from Boris came at 10pm. and a BBC reporter responded to someone else saying it was meant to be embargoed until that time when it was posted early

there should be a proper communication strategy which apparently there isn't. send letters, texts, buy a whole bunch of TV ads

yes, it didn't work in France a week ago so they had to go full quarantine. why would it be different here? and it's been obvious for longer than that here.

maybe the latter. i dunno how it works and whether Trump could overrule them though, surely. who wants to be the state to take that to court

McDonald's will close all 1,270 of its restaurants in the UK by the end of Monday, as fears over the spread of coronavirus escalate.

Previously, the fast food giant had closed its seating areas but had continued to offer takeaway and drive-through services.

McDonald's said it wanted to protect the wellbeing of staff and customers.

On Friday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said restaurants and cafes must close, but exempted take-away food places.

McDonald's employs around 135,000 people in the UK, the majority of which are on zero-hours contracts.

The chain said staff employed directly by the company would receive full pay for their scheduled hours until 5 April.

By that time it expects the government's financial aid package, announced on Friday, to have kicked in, with staff paid 80% of their wages.

A spokeswoman told the BBC she expected McDonald's franchises, which decide their own pay policies, to follow suit.
