Just watched the big match back. That had the intensity and quality of a final. You don't get much better striking than some of those forehand to forehand rallies and the ones ended with the drop shots were standouts.
Much better from Muguruza and that performance would have taken care of the vast majority of this draw. She should be looking to back up this performance. Hope I am wrong but for the first time I thought Sabalenka looked a little tired at the end of a match. Still fingers crossed for a Sabalenka/Osaka rematch. Smith/Robson the definition of irritating. Sooner Robson gets back on court the better. Any chance Smith can make a comeback as well? |

Stephens, what a joke of a favourite. Wakey wakey bookmakers. Another in the pretty long kick up the backside queue. Absolute opposite in attitude to Cibulkova.
Still one or two glorified ball pushers left. Hopefully, they don't get too much further. Being out of form means they are low on confidence but they should be fresher for playing less matches. |

what's your forecast for the semi finals and final from here dd?
By:
As per previous. I have backed Sabalenka and Osaka in the outright. Leaving aside possible fitness issues (which for me is primarily guesswork) I think you have to go with the two best players at this time. That was my query with the bookmakers who despite having 'experts' seem to price everything up on rankings. How much evidence do they need to see Sabalenka isn't a flash in the pan?
I am biased towards Sabalenka and despite losing to Osaka I think she has the greater talent. Just concerned that she looked a little tired after beating Muguruza in what will probably be the match of the tournament. The day off should help and there are no players in her quarter who set out to wear an opponent down. It would also help her cause if she can keep doing it in two. That said I don't think it is so much the length of the matches more the fact that she seems to put everything into every point which is what makes her enjoyable and worth watching. Again as I said before I am looking forward to a Williams match-up. That is the only match I can think of where the ball might be travelling faster than against Muguruza. So hopefully, a rematch final between Sabalenka and Osaka. Osaka has had a very good draw and the Goerges match should be a bit more informative. As regards the other semi-finalists I would prefer Cibulkova and Kontaveit but the last quarter looks quite difficult to predict. How about yourself? |
By:
I find things too difficult to predict at this stage of the season, with motivation levels differing massively from player to player. I'll plump for a Sevastova v Bertens final, a bit of a wild guess really.
By:
If that happens I hope they have sold the tickets in advance.
By:
Just to add if you are backing a player who is better than her opponents and some are turning up half baked then that is great news. I fear for any of them if they honestly think they can flick a switch and turn the tables in a few months. If Sabalenka maintains her appetite/desire then the gulf will likely widen. Leaving aside their ability to turn up how many of the current top 10/20 are actually improving? Hopefully, next year the game will move forward and three of the Slams will not be won by solid, ball pushers.
