Maybe I'm reading too much into it. No reason really to retire as long as he still winning and still loves the sport and is injury free, but realistically it has to end at some point.

Rod Laver wondering why when he was videoing it kept showing his own face.
|
|
By:
Course he wont retire, he want to try and win the only thing he's never won, singles Olympic Gold in Tokyo, so another 2 and half years, will probably retire in Basel just after that.

One of the sweetest sites I've seen in Tennis was when Marin Safin left Frauderer on his backside at match point in the 2005 Australian Open Semi-Final, and then Federer trudging to the net to shake hands barely able to look him the eye, as if to say "you b******".
Happy days. |

I prefer sights, but sites is interesting.

Roger absolutely brilliant , well played and well deserved Sir

There's no way he retires while still winning grand slams imo.
There's another perspective that if he retires he can easily be handing the keys to someone (Nadal) to overtake his records, why do that when you are still winning. Federer is the best player right now, I just don't see why he'd retire in such a position, he can set records that are out of this world for anyone to try and catch. |
|
By:
The players that did retire after winning slams were virtually finished outside winning those slams and it was the last hurrah, but with Federer it isn't. Off of clay he's the clear favourite to win every event, on the basis of this event, this year already looks like it will be similar to last year.
I'm curious if he will turn up on clay this year. |

Plus this = 23 on his mind obv. |

It all depends upon the return of Djokovic, and Nadal can beat him at the US Open.
If Djokovic comes back to his best, it's a no contest. It's a shame he declined so dramatically after winning the French finally. |
|
By:
And he's tainted his legacy by refusing to play the clay season, again.
|
|
By:
if Nadal skipped Wimbledon, as he probably should, it would mean nothing to his legacy
|
|
By:
he would lose respect for not even trying.

Is Wozniacki actually going to play St. Petersburg ?
|
|
By:
no point screwing his knees up and losing to some mug every year really
|
|
By:
he hasn't retired from matches at Wimbledon because of injury it's just that he can't play matches there the way he used to because of his knees, a lot of the losses he has had to mugs, have at least been close, if he was being pummelled it might be another question, but you have to be in it to win it.
Federer on the other hand, is basically a part time player these days, gives himself a huge advantage to win the other slams. |

I think Federer will play RG.
I think you will be under pressure from the ITF/individual slams to not just no show slams for the rest of your career as they don't want to set precedents like this where players just sac off their weakest slam. Thing is if Federer actually played the French he would be 2nd fav anyway, it seems a little weird to give that up, in sense he only really needs Nadal to falter and he's back to clear fav again. Though he spoke last year how he felt a big confidence thing vs Nadal was not playing him on clay. |

Whereby tank you mean lose to a better player?

Are there any better players other than Lisicki in the draw?

Federer is 5th favourite to win French Open. (wont play NAP)
Wouldn't have to play anyway because he's over 31 so can miss any slam he wants. |
|
By:
He's 5th fav because it's' heavily weighted to him not playing. If he says I will play then plays a few warm ups he will end up 2nd fav real fast. Plus half the guys above him are crocks.

Peng is #1 seed Edy but probs not fit. Won't be that surprising if Bouchard gets bounced by Lin Zhu R1.
|
|
By:
Says it all that Bouchard is 1.8 in that kind of match now.
|
|
By:
if he does play, he will not be in the top 2 favourites, 2nd fav on clay at 36? it'd be Djokovic dependant on his form going in
|
|
By:
So what does age matter exactly.
1st fav for AO, Wimbledon and USO , and he will be 37 for the last one. |
|
By:
Bet365 have Federer 6th fave behind Rafa, Novak, Thiem, Wawrinka and Murray

Age matters a lot ffs, he is limping on beating bang average players, once Novak/Murray are back properly he's finished.

Lucky to beat Nadal last year who threw it away.
Did not play Murray or Djokovic at Wimbledon and beat an injured Cilic. Given a bye to this years final thanks to Chung. Just keep getting all the luck. |

4-0 vs Nadal last year

would have been 4-4 if he played clay

As Gary Player said when somebody said he was a lucky player because he often holed shots from the bunker....the harder I practice the luckier I get ![]() |
