It is Edy and it is a factor why there was very little throughput in the ATP top 8 for years. Way too easy to maintain your ranking when you are a guaranteed a top 8 seed until pretty much US Open, that you have to flop hard, or get injured to leave it.
It's even worse in ATP where the value of a top 8 seed is higher (as avoiding the big 4 for as long as possible has traditionally been huge), in WTA the worth is lower as the top seeds aren't as good. It's still an advantage though, and you have to be quite a lot better than someone with this advantage to actually overtake them in the rankings if you are ranked below them. |

Did you watch KaPlis vs. Sasnovich?
By:
It is that reason why if you look in WTA. Someone who ended last year in YEC has to flop exceptionally high or be injured to leave the top 20 the following year. Examples of this last year when Ivanovic and Woz ended the year top 20 last year despite being terrible in 2015, they weren't really worthy of their rankings (of 16 and 17 respectively), but their high seedings all year had propped them up enough to get enough good draws to stay there. You have to do a Bouchard like collapse for your ranking to totally collapse.

By:
It was no surprise they drifted down the rankings even further this year once they lost that ranking protection from last year, because they were playing worse than their rankings suggested.
By:
Yes I did Edy.
By:
well, gotta protect your stars and help them keep their ranking. They make you your money....
....Was Sasnovich good or did Pliskova put in one of her listless awful performances? |
By:
Sasnovich played one of the better matches I've ever seen from her, but Pliskova was poor. Seemed a poor attitude to me, she started the match to me like I'm always going to win this match why are you bothering? Barely moving. She did try to get going, but couldn't really, the key was losing the first set after getting it back on serve initially.
By:
She started like she could just swat Sasnovich away without even trying.
By:
thanks
By:
I guess that's one of Pliskova's weaknesses, that her game when she's not on it is quite poor really.
By:
And she can get outplayed by relatively average players when not at it.
By:
Woz is having much more trouble with Linette than I thought she would.

By:
So they go back to Russia to get their prescriptions.

I think it does winningthought. It's a crazy schedule for those in Seoul and Tokyo. Especially those that don't have a bye, which is everybody bar Radwanska and Muguruza.
