Theresa May has addressed rumours circulating on a Facebook page set up by supporters of her former Tory leadership rival that she supports Sharia law in the UK. The Home Secretary, asked by Buzzfeed's Emily Ashton about the group set up by Andrea Leadsom backers, said she is "concerned" that Sharia law is operating in a way that could be counter to "our single rule of law" and that is why she has set up a review into Sharia law practices. The Home Secretary announced the review in May as part of the Government’s counter-extremism strategy. For too long politicians in this country refuse to look at the issue of Sharia law and just allow this to continue without any question. I've been the politician who's been willing to say no, I'm concerned that Sharia law is operating in a way that could discriminate against women and that could be counter to what is our single rule of law that we have in the UK. Express gotta be the worst paper ever. The other day someone posted an article from it that said "wooooooo, end of Schengen and reintroduction of border controls", when in fact what had been voted on was a measure to strengthen and protect the Schengen area by enabling more help to countries with outside borders if they request help for their border controls.

edy • July 9, 2016 2:32 PM BST First of all they have not voted overwelmingly to bring back border border controls. Border controls within the Schengen area have always been allowed if the respective member state deemed it necessary. What they actually voted for is the EU support of border controls in countries that have an outside border of the Schengen area. That does not mean the end of Schengen. In fact, it's the opposite. The entire purpose of this measure is to protect and strengthen the Schengen area by giving more power to an agency that will provide border control help to the countries with outside borders. Not doing this would've likely meant the end of Schengen. This had been planned since last year too. It's not a reaction to the leave vote of a country that isn't even a member of the Schengen area. |
