how is it even possible to play a 29 minute point

Nelson-Dunbar turned 22 minutes after the match ended, but she went to bed without celebrating because she had to play again that afternoon.

poor girl, another match after a 6+ hours marathon

To show how long that is, I will say start now and then write point finish in 29 minutes. Start.

Allertova broken. Euro grass plays dodgy.

Well done mike.

the true story is that they played a 5 minute point during which umpire and everyone else fell asleep, they chilled for about 20 minutes, played another point for 4 minutes that ended with a loud roar that woke everyone else.

That, my dear children, is the true story about the legendary 29 minute point.

Among the astonishing elements to the match was this: If Hepner had won the epic rally, she would have forced a third set, and who knows how long the match might have lasted.

From Wertheim.

The other conspicuous absence was, of course, Maria Sharapova. As I write this, we await a decision from WADA, but a ban in the 1–2 year range looks increasingly likely.

I wonder where they get such information from. In that if the ban is known, why is it not announced. They don't so themselves any favours really, it just looks bad all round.

The whole "negotiating" line put out there ages ago also come across ridic awkward.

A doping case should be pretty black or white. None of this grey area, negotiating over ban length etc.

Automatic life ban would be too harsh, but it shouldn't be as long a process as this Sharapova case, it's way too long.

There should be some process whereby you failed x, what is your defence/reasoning, this is then considered, and then you either get the default ban (which I think is 2 years for 1st time offenders, 4 years for repeat) or reduced on your reasoning.

Though honestly I'm not sure didn't check my e-mails should classify as good enough reasoning for any reduction.

I think there should be two Events in sport generally. One for Drug-takers and one for the rest. If you are caught taking drugs, you are fined lifetime earnings and striped of your honours and play for the rest of your life in the Druggy events.

The whole affair does nothing to a) give people faith in the anti-doping system and b) convince people against silent bans and the like.

It's just been handled very poorly, and is far too slow a process. It's nearly 6 months since she failed a test, and if it wasn't for Sharapova holding a press conference, the information wouldn't even be public yet.
By:

When: 06 Jun 16 16:43
ITF is changing its guidelines now to disclose test results before the verdict, i.e no more silent provisional suspensions
