just swap the Finals with the Lesser Finals in Zhuhai

if needed
By:
this year they couldn't have the WTA finals one week later, because then it would clash with Taylor Swift's Singapore concerts.
By:
never understood why the ToC, and now the Lesser Finals, have always been placed after the YEC/WTA Finals
By:
No. They're "stuck" because the top players wanted as short a season as possible, and WTA probably couldn't make it physically any shorter than currently within reason, without a major tear up which won't happen as it would affect their bottom line.
Something will need to give though. It feels like this year will be the straw that breaks the camels back (hopefully you get this ), as tournaments are seemingly seething, fans aren't happy, and WTA have admitted there's a problem. So something has to be done, it's a question of how long it takes to do something. It's not like they can just shift things around, and have a new 2016 calendar is it. |
By:
The above is why it's like that. See Radwanska's comments on Zhuhai, about it being late, and not wanting to play that late. The top players don't want to play that late seemingly. Just how many/who these top players are isn't really clear.
By:
Don't need to shift things around to solve the Moscow/YEC situation unless Taylor Swift has already blocked the arena next year for the relevant time as well
By:
Realistically next years calendar will be set in stone by now. At least the big events. Stuff like internationals might not be.
By:
So earliest you can do anything is 2017, and even then you've got to get a move on, as the 2017 calendar probably set by around February 2016.
By:
Radwanska is a mug. Season too long, needs time to rest and heal. Yet spends 4 weeks jetting around Asia for the IPTL
By:
I really don't think Zhuhai should be mandatory. As it is it prolongs players' season with two weeks. It should be optional.
By:
Yes, but it has to be mandatory from the WTA perspective doesn't it (ie. business perspective).
If it wasn't it would be withdrawal central and a complete joke event. |
By:
VIP always showed up for Bali, didn't she?

By:
players could always come up with some injury excuse if they really don't want to play.
By:
Zhuhai is a problem in itself. Super inflated points and prize money, wouldn't be surprised if it's in an attempt to get players to play.
Yet Venus seemingly is going to withdraw. Ivanovic said in press in Lux "it's probably her last tournament of the year". Keys is injured. Next in's Azarenka, Makarova clearly aren't going to play. Petkovic said after today "she's looking forward to the off season, she needs it, needs time off, needs to sort out her coaching team" etc. So just who is going to be playing. And that's with it being mandatory and super inflated incentives to play. |
By:
of course they might end up with a zero pointer or miss out on bonus money. Not sure on the incentives
By:
I'm impressed with 1xbet, they just put on a proper stream for Verdasco (was pirate stream before because that was all that was available) and I've never even had to point these things out to them.

Apparently only 3 players are actually confirmed for Zhuhai. Wozniacki, Errani, Vinci.
Ok a lot of players are still in Singapore contention thus will be why they're not confirmed. But it's not mandatory for Singapore alternates anyway. It could turn into a complete farce. And you could get someone running around next season with a ridiculously inflated ranking from Zhuhai if it turns into a complete joke. |
By:
It's also impressive how they always improvise with pirate streams if the official streams don't work
By:
yes
By:
There is a $50k fine for skipping Zhuhai, zero pointer. Of course you won't get the fine if you can cite injury.
By:
Is Keys done for the season?
By:
It's pretty obvious though. Somewhere like Bali, some players will want to go. Zhuhai, nobody has probably even heard of Zhuhai.
Keys not confirmed done as far as I know. But I think she will withdraw tbh. She seems pretty anti-vulture anyway, and probably can't be bothered to go back to China for this. |
By:
Maybe Zhuhai is beautiful. Is it indoors or outdoors btw?
By:
If there are 2 withdrawals, it's literally going down like a house of cards, because after Jankovic the next in's are all players who for sure won't play.

zhuhai/zhuhai-transportation.jpg Look! They have palm trees in Zhuhai! Almost like Bali |
By:
Outdoors I think? I don't really know tbh. If it's getting a 15,000 seat arena, I assume it's outdoors though.
Someone on TF keeps writing that Zhuhai is filled with dirty rivers, and there is nothing there in effect. |

It's pretty obvious though. Somewhere like Bali, some players will want to go. Zhuhai, nobody has probably even heard of Zhuhai. This. If they were already in China anyway, maybe it wouldn't have been such a problem to stick around, but to go back there at the end of a season for a 2nd tier event. I could see why many wouldn't want to do that. |

Yes, the location is clearly one of the major issues.
I don't know long a contract Zhuhai signed, and the money they are putting up is madness (they're putting up similar money to a premier 5, and probably more when you take into account a premier 5 has 56 players, this has 12), but I really can't see Zhuhai lasting more than about 3 years. |

How much longer until the WTA finals go to MSG?

Prize money is like $100k less than a premier 5. Just how did WTA get someone to put that money up for an event that guarantees no top 8 players, no top 10 players are required to play, and by definition is a second tier event.

I hope Zhuhai is on at decent times here.

Probably like 6-7am your time.
