when it comes to judging a top players coach, what actually gets them praised?if the player loses, then the coach is terrible but if the player wins well they are really good anyway and would have won in spite of the coach

^ Amelie has been a key example of that, but do think the fact she is a woman is probably half the reason some don't wanna praise her

I guess being the coach that actually brought that player to a new level. From that perspective, you're right you're never going to get great respect for being Serena's coach at this stage of her career. But there's going to be something in that, because a lot of people would say anyone could be sitting in Serena's box and she'd still win. Ultimately the level of player you have is important no matter how good a coach you are.

That Sumyk from his work with Zvonareva and Azarenka clearly has a great reputation now of the great work he's done with players.

But with Bouchard you have someone who has hugely lofty goals, and at least from what she says wants success pretty much now. This isn't necessarily the easiest position, because I assume most people would agree right now she's pretty outclassed at the very top of the game. She just parted with a coach that got her to the YEC within 2 years on the main tour (even though I know I heavily questioned him re: Wimbledon F last year), doesn't suggest she will the most patient if she doesn't see instant progess, and she's surrounded by a team that will have lofty expectations and marketing goals for her.

I remember early 2011 people were actually calling for Sumyk's head on Vikaland (around Middle Eastern swing 2011). She was playing awfully, and just didn't seem to be enjoying it out there.

Of course is very hard for someone with a Vika avatar to post that on TF without it just causing more hassle than it's worth, so I didn't bother.

He rubs people the wrong way clearly because calling yourself "The Mastermind" is clearly going to do that.Personally I think he's got Serena more focused on tennis, probably more than she's ever been, and she's reaped the rewards from that. But I'm not convinced he's some super coach, it's not like he's done a great deal with other players.I don't think whenever Serena retires there will be some huge demand from top players for him. I actually think it will be Sascha Bajin the players will go after, who is clearly heavily respected for his role over the years.

I agree. Patrick's main contribution is ensuring Serena is focused on tennis through emotional support and companionship. He's definitely not some tennis mastermind that would have Kerber winning 5 grand slams if he coached her.

I respect coaches who can turn around a players fortunes. Safarova's coach, the guy who coached Li Na for a while and helped her get over the line on the grand alsms too. Carlos Sanchez was it?

It's from that point btw that I'm most surprised Sumyk would leave Vika for Bouchard (though I guess if you believe the official story this isn't exactly how it went down). Nothing really to do with the players. But from a job security point of view, you're going from somewhere you're viewed as family to a camp where you will be viewed as the odd man out if things start going wrongly and could easily be out of a job by this time next year (not that he'd probably have any trouble getting back in, but that's beside the point).

Carlos Rodriguez Wisewords. He's a top coach imo. Apparently both Azarenka and Bouchard wanted him, but he's tied up with the Chinese tennis federation which basically means he can't travel from China.

Missing to serve it out, then getting crushed in the tie will probably not helped andrea. Think its rather a tactical MTO to break momentum.
