Has anyone heard this (on Patrick Mouratoglou):
"Baghdatis, and Gasquet have outright said that he is a fraud and that Serena is a legend and would win with or without him." |
By:
blasphemy
By:
Would be interested if I could find where if those are indeed true are from. They're likely in French if they exist.

the final point is definitely true

Well yer I assume a lot of people would agree with the sentiment, not necessarily as strong as the quote (but bare in mind the poster clearly has an anti-Mouratoglou agenda so I doubt they actually said fraud, that's probably his term).

didn't Serena's rise back up coincide with him turning up or is just luck that he turned up just as she got fit again
By:
Even among Serena fans he doesn't seem too popular.

By:
don't they think he is part of the reason is back at IW

serena's panic room has alot to be thanked for.

Well kind of Aaron, but a bit of a coincidence imo. He started working with her sometime around mid-2012, yes her re-rise started again around this time, but she'd also been out for a year and probably played less than 10 tournaments before getting with him, and made USO F in 2011 etc.

Behind the success of a woman, there is always a mouratoglou.

At least I would say it was inevitable Serena was going to return to the top regardless. Before that year layoff Serena was winning 2 grand slams a year in 2009-2010, clearly a year out set her back a bit. But she hasn't been winning grand slams at any greater rate than she was pre-injury layoff. You can argue she's improved outside grand slams, and he does seem to have her caring/more focused outside grand slams. But for me it's just that, he has her more focused and wanting to win those events, rather than making huge strides as a player with her. Probably the best job he's done, is he seems to have her much more willing to construct points on clay, but his detractors say this has actually hurt Serena's results on grass under his tenure.
By:
but when you play on grass once a year a small sample size is gonna be the problem
By:
He rubs people the wrong way clearly because calling yourself "The Mastermind" is clearly going to do that.
Personally I think he's got Serena more focused on tennis, probably more than she's ever been, and she's reaped the rewards from that. But I'm not convinced he's some super coach, it's not like he's done a great deal with other players. I don't think whenever Serena retires there will be some huge demand from top players for him. I actually think it will be Sascha Bajin the players will go after, who is clearly heavily respected for his role over the years. |
By:
he's done well to keep her motivated and fit, but it's Serena Williams we're talking about, it's not like she was some journeywoman pre-Mouratoglou.
As much as I love Stefan Edberg, it's not like I'll praise him as some incredible coach just because he's done well with Roger. |
By:
Richel turned into mug mode during intermission.
By:
when it comes to judging a top players coach, what actually gets them praised?
if the player loses, then the coach is terrible but if the player wins well they are really good anyway and would have won in spite of the coach |
By:
Becker probably a better example in men's game imo. He's gone into Djokovic's camp, does anyone honestly see any improvement in Djokovic's game since Becker has gone in?
Edberg might have been fortunate when he come in, because Federer was at his lower point in over a decade probably when he came in, and how much was down to Federer struggling physically we don't know, but Federer certainly has been playing better tennis the last 15 months. |

Becker supposedly went in because of Djokovic's poor record in grand slam finals at the time. Even on that it's hard to see much of an impact. The performance against Nadal last year at RG kind of stands out. He basically outlasted Federer at Wimbledon. And then this AO final was all over the place.
