all this ramping. Serena is 1.46 now

1.48 now. Could go higher given the reports really.

I just don't see how you can put much weight in them though. She's supposedly been struggling since R4, she's played reasonable in that time, not her best, but at a level that will be good enough to win tomorrow. Especially her serving has been superb.

plus the fact she's still desperate to win, because she's clinging on to the hope she can catch up to Navratilova, Evert and Graf.

btw, what's counted as the absolute record? Graf 22 open era or Court 24 all time?

She's equal with Navratilova and Evret now, Graf benefited from Seles's injury

she could be on her death bed and she would still never allow herself to lose to Shara.

Court is considered the all time record. But Graf is considered the best women's player of all time.

Court won 11 Australian Opens at a time most the best other players didn't play it.

More than 5,600 tennis fans voted in the ESPN poll asking who would win the mythical match, with 51 percent taking Williams and 49% selecting Graf.

Clijsters relied a lot on her movement and flexibility, tough to be like that in your 30s. At the end of her 2nd career her level had dipped quite some from what it was initially.

Mythical matches are just that though. Because you can't really apply theory to them, as the game changes too much, especially when you start going further back to Navratilova and Evert.

The best players are born around the tools of that era.

they've played twice it's 1-1 a piece, Serena beat her in the Indian Wells final 1999 as a 17 year old

The thing is, Graf's slam record can easily be argued to be inflated due to her biggest rival being out injured, whereas serena herself missed a few slams during age-wise was her peak years which is also Graf has won a lot more matches. I only saw the back end of Graf's career really so can't a proper assessment

'With eight Grand Slam singles titles before her 20th birthday on December 2, 1993, Seles holds the record for most Grand Slam singles titles won as a teenager in the Open Era.'

There's also the Serena has tended to be way more peaks and troughs than Graf, who was incredibly consistent.

Graf was effectively what people have said Serena could have been from the early 2000s. Ie. the best player year after year. Serena it never quite materialised due to injuries, not fully committed to the game.

Graf won 7 or more titles for 11 years in a row, and won a grand slam 10 years in a row.

The counter to the last line mesmerised (and one I think is very valid) is if Serena had played solidly throughout her career she'd be retired or close to it by now.

Serena's career is pretty unique in that sense, that what you'd consider her prime years age wise will likely be the worst years of her career. She won 2 grand slams between Wimbledon 2003 and US Open 2008 (when she was 21-26). No other all time great will have a career anything like hers.

Williams could not resist a dig when asked this week about her last loss to Sharapova in Los Angeles 11 years ago, replying: "She was 17, super young and I think I was basically serving under hand."
