Milos Raonic - Thoughts

Think today will be end of the line for him - players like Nishi (poor on grass) and Kyrgios (was knackered) gave him problems - can't imagine Fed will fail to do so much more today.

May not bet though, as prices prob about right - maybe just a game to watch this one.

Kyrgios took out Nadal in the best performance of the tourn. Considering Nadal actually played well

and did not hand it to him.

Raonic was clinical the way he took out Kyrgios.

Fed's second home is centre court, Raonic will be shaking going out there.

MR has made it clear that his aim is steady progress. Getting to the semi of a GS fits in with this but Fed is very good at moving oponants around the court when required and movement is not MR's strongest point. If the serving is good, then perhaps the first set IMHO

Yes good points. Not sure if he will fold mentally, but surely the Kyrgios Nadal match told him something about that.

Can see potential for lot of missed first serves and doubles for Raonic today.

Raonic is a perfect opponent for Fed: tall, one-dimensional and bad defensivley, he will be fed the Federer backhand slize all day long, as simple as that.

Raonic is utter crap, worse than Dimitrov. If he beats Federer I'll give you the money myself. Take away Raonic's serve and you're left with someone worse than Tim Henman.

I'd be surprised if he beat Fed (even an old Fed), but even if he does, Joker or Dimitrov will be rubbing their hands.

Problem for Raonic is once he gets in to rallies with Federer he won't even win 33% of them. He just isn't a good enough a tennis player. Needs a lot of improvement on his game before he can challenge at the top.

Raonic can't sustain rallies with any of the top players. IMO he doesn't stand a chance against a returner like Djokovic. But... if he serves really well vs. Fed he has a chance at a couple of tiebreaks. His ground game when he is ultra aggressive and hits the ball really hard and deep is not too bad either. If he hits a lot of those backhand slice shots that work against the muppets, Fed is going to rip him apart. IMO we'll know within half a set if he has a chance.

I see him beating Fed in tie-breaks, but will Fed let it get to TBs?

Think more can Raonic keep up his serving level is the question - if not then Fed will break him.

Sorry! I got a middle on aces handicap. It didn't look at all likely but then Raonic hit loads of aces 2nd and 3rd set. He serves on average more than 1 ace per service game. Free point per game.

sure he has plenty of limitations but will earn a very good living with them, needs to improve plenty to lift titles

A little harsh - he's similar to Rafter or Phillopusus in his game. Old school big serve game. If anything, an achievement that he's doing so well with such an old school game, as big servers don't dominate these days.

However, he can't serve/volley the way they did. Maybe he should try to.

Exactly - need to play at the net with that serve, he isnt good enough at back of th court.

He is nothing like Rafter or Phillopusus, they could get to the net , by the time Raonic gets to the net its like he has been in quicksand for an hour

no it's not, being a big server is a natural weapon when you're that tall and strong, it's just a matter of executing a good serve which comes easier in time with muscle memory as it does with any server, as well as having time to think whereas baseline rallying you have to make constant split second decisions, it requires more skill and an aptitude for quick thinking,
