The reason they are no longer 5 sets is because too many of the masters are back to back and the players would withdraw from the 2nd masters citing exhaustion too often.

The tipping point was when Nadal and Fed played a 5 set epic in Rome in 2006 and both withdrew from Hamburg the week after. Obviously the tournaments want Fed and Nadal to play.
