If it was just one of three, maybe she would have been ok, but I can see how battling depression, cyberbullies AND **** can be too much.

On a serious note, sad to hear about this and a shame people are being nasty. I don't really understand why she'd have public social media accounts at all though, because unfortunately there will always be idiocy like this and if you can't ignore it, I would think it's better to not use social media. Also, this might sound harsh, but you probably have to be a little more thick-skinned to make it in a sport like tennis.

that is quite sad, although depression can prove impossible to conquer the thought that some anonymous wonkers behind their computer had some affect on her is sickening
hope she gets well and has time to reconsider

while true, you have to remember it's a little more than people just calling her a mug or whatever. there are some nasty comments about. getting these every week can be disheartening

for example, just look at Gasquet or Monfils facebook pages in recent days through google translate (or most players that lose)

she seems a relatively "normal" girl and perhaps wanted to connect with her fans and such a bit more. It's a lot easier to have your facebook page or twitter page set up than say a website of your own that could be monitored

good luck to here, hope she comes back at some point Happy

if you are suffering from depression (actual depression, not the us movie i'm feeling a bit down so let's go drink look at boobs and fire machine gun kind) things even like verbal abuse can be final straw, where people without it can easily dismiss it as some idiots on the internet it can be hard for someone like her to separate one thing from the other in terms of self image and have negative spiral effect. hopefully she has some people in her life that can do that part for her. but it is just chemical imbalance in the end and if she recovers and can comeback shouldn't be factored to what idiots think or say about her
best of luck to her Happy

That is disgusting. We have some seethes on here, a lot of them are funny, some cross the line into becoming too abusive, but that kind of stuff is horrific. You can guarantee that every single one of those comments is from someone who did their bank on him.

If this is the kind of thing that Rebecca was getting, and she was reading it in a clinically depressed state, I can certainly see how it could have become too much for her. Poor girl, good luck to her.

In an ideal world twitter and such are a cool and easy way to get in contact with your fans. Sadly there are a lot of cocknoses who will use social media to abuse you in a very shameful way. Mostly because of lost bets, a decision they made and they should feel responsible for, as someone mentioned earlier. Their little egos can't take them blaming themselves though so they decide to bash the players instead.

Even on here people, whon I won't name, have encouraged other users to go and voice their "displeasure" on a player's twitter about a lost set or match. Ironically one of them is someone who is the loudest person at complaining when he thinks he's being treated unfairly by his fellow forumites.

Anyway, it's quite sad. Last year Gajdosova had to take a break from twitter because she was taking massive abuse about fixing matches and only having had married Samuel Groth to get australian citizenship. All in a phase when she was going through shit anyway, with the broken marriage, not winning any matches and her mom battling cancer (and eventually passing away in September I think).

Laura Robson also closed her twitter account at least momentarily just a few days ago because people were giving her massive shit after her loss against Putintseva.

There have been studies that smoking pot every now and then only destroys your brain up to around your 25th birthday. So I completely refrained from smoking those substances up to that point to prevent any major damage to my memory and brain.

No ;[p, but you can enjoy all those fancy colours without the irreparrable damage to your brain.

In all seriousness: I'm boring and have never smoked pot in my life. Neither before nor after my 25th birthday. Noffy quite obviously has or he would remember when and where that study had been mentioned before Silly

Entirely disagree. If you bet on someone who doesnt seem bothered to put in any effort, or gives up on the match, or cheats, or does something that could be counted as unprofessional, why should you not tell them what you think? Why should they, as a professional athlete be allowed to escape the fact that what they do on the court does not just influence themselves, that it does affect people who gamble, it does spoil the match for the crowd that has paid to see it. If these players want to avoid criticism, go out there on the court each and every match and play as if you want to win. Do that, which is what is expected from a professional athlete, and you won't get nasty comments on social media sites. If you aren't prepared to act as a professional sportsperson, then don't use social media sites because you are guaranteed to get comments that are not nice.

Of course not, that's why the bookies are queueing up to sponsor events that would otherwise have no sponsors.

The comments on that facebook page for Sam Querrey are bad, but I'm not sure why they posted them on there. For a start, it is not his personal facebook page, and is evidently run by someone else, his agent etc. If you're going to post nasty things to him, you'd think that any sensible person would contact him directly.

I have come to learn over time that the only real way to make money from betting is either through fixed matches or have some kind of insider knowledge the bookies don't know about. You can do all the research in the world with stats etc; but at the end of the day the bookies know all this anyway. Trading is diferent however and i have never traded. My advice to anyone is to avoid mug players, Russell, Young, Jankovic, Zheng, Peng, Blake. All players you get a feel about after many years experience in tennis

oh this raises nice point incidentally, there's some sensible guy here (calls himself journalist and documentary maker) that stated we (the dutch) should slander and pick on one particular banker (SNS bank) and succeeded in a way he now fled the country, supposedly to Germany but on Aruba or something obviously.
he now faces criminal charges

Even trying your best on any given day can lose you matches as heavy favourite, you know? You say players won't get bashed if they try to win and give the spectators what they paid for.

Do you think a 6-4 2-6 7-6(6) scoreline (with Robson fighting back from 2-5 in the 3rd I believe before losing in the end) indicates Robson not being interested in winning? Yet she did receive enough **** to force her to at least momentarily close her twitter account for the first time since it's creation I think.

Same with Querrey. I admittedly only watched the very end out of boredom, but he didn't look like an uninterested mess that wasn't trying to win. You see and commented on the bashing he received on facebook already, so your point about them not receiving any abuse when they're trying and play like what you call professional is complete bull.

Enraged people who just lost major bucks are not going to care if someone tried or not. They will see the lost money, act in an irrespponsible way and maybe even completely refuse to look at the whole set of circumstances and make silly accusations instead (like you have done with Gajdosova in the past).

the thing is Edy is RObson was 5-3 up in the tiebreak there and should have close out the match, as a professional tennis player you'd expect it. Still no excuse for abuse

Gajdosova? I have criticised her on here, sure. Why shouldn't I when she doesn't put in any effort?
By:

When: 22 Feb 13 16:08
Maybe, I'm not gonna argue that Robson played her brilliant best and Putintseva trumped that level. A player will know when she played shit. Not only through the result, but also her own judgement and coach.

As you say abusing a player does absolute no good whatsoever for the player or the sport. Even if a player does seem to not give his maximum effort. As seen with some examples given in this thread it can cause quite the opposite and in an extreme even destroy (promising) careers or even lifes.

Dude SoA, you accused her of match fixing, multiple times. Did you ever consider that maybe a person devoid of any confidence, with a broken marriage on her mind and with her mom battling cancer all that time could have other reasons for not being focused and hence losing (as her super high risk game requires focus, even more than that of other tennis players) than throwing matches on purpose?

Of course you didn't, because in your world it's all about evil tennis players who are machines without feelings (or things that go on in their lives that influence them - like heavy abuse does btw...in a negative way) that don't obey your statistics.
