The lovely ladies now run the world - well, on beeb and spoty at least

Wonder if the market will respond this year or assume a rebalance to a man winning...?

When: 19 Dec 24 15:38
Mind you Keely did actually deserve it this time - in contrast to Earps winning it which was a joke.
By:
----you-have-to-laugh---
When: 19 Dec 24 17:37
I thought earps deserved it for standing up to shirt supplier
and sporting achievement in a poor year, with help from beeb
who removed anybody that might beat her anyway.

Which was why I felt littler would be removed from kellys
coronation, but beeb put him in, with a mended voting rules.

We learn from the changes, and look forward to the next lot.

Earps didn't really win it on sporting excellence, which personally I think is the difference.

indeed if england had won the final highly unlikely she would have won. would have been russo or some other goal scorer
By:

She kept England in it with pelanty save and her bravado (swearing)
was a highlite of sporting year.

She certainly earned her nomination.

Bbc then went out of their way to ensure she won it.
By:
----you-have-to-laugh---
When: 20 Dec 24 15:42
England didn't win it, which was part of the point
of the non goal scorers not winning. And the reward
to the goalie who stood up to shirt suppliers not producing
England ladies goalkeeper kit.

Gazza won it for crying and missing the final that
we didn't make anyway, and releasing a record.

She'd have still won.  Saved a penna and was excellent throughout, russo and co were a pile of shoite

Earps was a decent goalie in a minority sport - fair enough she deserved her nom, and I even won by backing her, so all's fair in these games.

The most popular female sport in the world, with the World Cup watched by around 2 billion people, but a minority sport in your eyes stu lol

Minority sport in terms of competitors who play it - compare it to the men's game it's tiny in competition.

TBF that does also apply to some of the 'sports' e.g. Yacht racing rubbish!

I still can see why we won so much on earps and how she stayed 8/1 for so long :)

Fair point GB, I managed to win that year backing her, but the perception of her sport did make her even better value. As I've said, not going to say I'm a fan of women's football in a wider context, but she was massive value of course in her spoty context.

Should just add I think Keely was one of the best athletic and sporting achievers for many years in spoty (men or women) - athletics is a women's sport that I really admire as you have to beat a huge world field.

British number one Jack Draper will miss the first event of the 2025 season with a hip injury but is "very positive" about competing at the Australian Open.

The 22-year-old cancelled a training camp with four-time major champion Carlos Alcaraz in Spain this week because of a "little bit of a niggle".

Draper says he has now been advised not to play for Great Britain in the United Cup team competition - starting against Argentina in Sydney on 30 December - and will also sit out the Davis Cup tie in Japan in late January.

The Australian Open starts in Melbourne on 12 January.

"As I work to get on top of my hip injury and get match fit, I have unfortunately been advised not to play in the United Cup," he said in a message posted on his social media channels.

"While we are very positive about competing in the Australian Open this year, I know I won't be able to jump straight into a packed schedule as I manage and strengthen my hip.

"I'm gutted as I was really looking forward to playing in the United Cup for the first time."

Lando 7.2.... 8.0

If Luke wins this, will we have the quickest ever return of a spoty train on here...?

Long time to wait to collect and avoid any alternative opposition, but as a world champ and non-olympic year would have to be a fair contender already...

Must admit I did have the same thought tim - he was an impact 'personality' last year, despite not quite winning enough.

This year, it could be the opposite!

Great Britain have won gold in the four-man bobsleigh at the IBSF World Cup in Winterberg, Germany.

The team of Brad Hall, Taylor Lawrence, Arran Gulliver and Greg Cackett claimed victory with a time of combined time of one minute 48.07 seconds from their two runs, beating Germany by just under two tenths of a second.

It is the first time since 2012 that a team from Germany has not won the Winterberg race, which is the third of eight World Cup legs in the 2024-25 season.

For Hall, it is his fourth World Cup gold in the four-man event, taking three golds during the 2022-23 season.

"To finish in first place here is incredible," said Hall. "It's been a very long time since anyone other than the Germans have won here.

"We're extremely happy and we're now hoping this is a stepping stone to being on top of the podium a few more times this season before we hit the World Championships in March."

Mia Brookes produced another stunning display of big air snowboarding on Sunday to seal back-to-back World Cup victories.

The 17-year-old Briton won last month's event in Beijing and followed that up with another victory in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Sitting third after her first jump, Brookes did just enough with her second and third runs to climb above Japan's Mari Fukada into the gold medal position.

Brookes, who became the youngest ever snowboard world champion in slopestyle in 2023, clinched victory after claiming the best run score of the day with her final attempt (95.75), just as she did in Beijing.

She finished with a total score of 184.25 - two points clear of Fukada, whose compatriot Momo Suzuki was third with 166.75.

"It was insane, I surprised myself," Brookes told the BBC.

"I didn't even plan to do a 14 (cab 1440 melon trick). I knew I could do the trick, it was just whether I could get it round on the jump.

"I did the same thing in China. Going in to that third run I was like 'I've done the stuff I wanted to do and I'm happy. I might as well give it a swing and see what happens'.

"It feels kind of unreal. I think it needs to sink in. It's insane to say I've won two back-to-back competitions."

The next World Cup event takes place in Kreischberg, Austria, next weekend.

I'm a big lukey fan, but the only reason i can see for not laying these prices is you don't want to tie bank up

But my bank is mostly for spoty anyway
By:

same GB - at this level of price would only make sense to lay, and see what alternatives will turn up.

But...you have to tie money up for practically a year!
By:
stu
When: 06 Jan 25 15:59
Same about not laying should add - my bank is definitely not mostly for spoty...
