Here's a relevant stat for potential future years - cricketers have only ever won the award in the year of a home Ashes series.

""I still think Murray is too short and that there could yet be a 'runner or rider' to challenge him" ...In 2012 not only did Murray win Olympic Singles Gold by beating Federer in 3 straight sets on Centre Court at Wimbledon, but six weeks before he was the first British Male to make the Wimbledon Final since Henry Wilfred "Bunny" Austin 74 years prior in 1938. Murray was 'robbed' of Wimbledon victory, as when a set up the match was halted and the roof closed changing the match favourably towards the more attacking Federer. The after match tears during the interview with Sue Barker saw his SPOTY price tumble by half. Six weeks later Murray reversed that Wimbledon loss by beating Federer in straight sets on the same Wimbledon Centre Court and almost made it a Double Gold by narrowly losing 8-10 in a 'champions' match tie-break shoot-out (played when at a set all ~ first to 10 points, 2 points clear minimum) in the Mixed Doubles Final with lovely Miss Laura Robson thus adding a Silver Medal to his haul. After the Olympics he went back to Dunblane and paraded around town all day letting every youngster in the country feel, touch, wear and be photographed with Murray and/or his Olympic medals around his golden post box. After all this he then went on to win the US Open in September and in so doing became the first British Male Grand Slam tournament winner since Fred Perry won Wimbledon and the US Open 76 years previous in 1936 and Murray ended the year ranked ATP No.3 (this year his year end ranking is ATP No.4). Yet after his best on court year in 2012, Murray still only secured 14.17% of the SPOTY public vote which was his best ever! In all 6 of his other shortlist visits, (naturally not in person of course as he 'doesn't' attend), 2011 was his 2nd best return of the overall percentage of the public vote netting just 5.48% and apart from last years one-off he has always secured less than 20,000 votes. In comparison with Super-Smashing-Great Sprint 'King' Cav's 49.47% (169,152) of the 2011 SPOTY vote or with AP's 41.98% (293,152) of the 2010 vote, Scotland barely lifted a finger! |

No real call to arms for AP in today's Racing Post.
1/3 page article on page 3 in which he says "if I get a mention it will be nice". Thinks Murray is a worthy fav and will probably win. Will be attending on his own,as his son isn't well, has also advised JP not to bother turning up. Full page in the sports section, with a little piece about all 10.They tip Froome for a Top 3 finish. |

...will Mo Farah be the 'runner' to make a final lap sprint to the line?
By:
layers lining up - come on boys you can do it - one last time, you managed 1.08 last time
By:
can someone please explain the prices on the without murray market, i am keen on ap mccoy to be runner up to murray and cant understand how in the outright market ap is ahead of mo farah yet its the other way round in the without market.
mo farah had a fantastic year in 2012 yet did not make the last 3,so with a quiet 2013 will be taking him on in the places with ap mccoy and c froome. anyone agree? |

By:
The irony being that the Murray layers were focusing their attention on the wrong alternative ;-)
By:
The British public are racist, hence Mo only came 4th last year when his achievements were best or 2nd best.
I'd be very surprised if he comes 2nd this year |
By:
if ap has a campaign he beats farrah and gets close(ish) to murray
no campaign and he probably misses second, i see no campaign |
By:
...having won SPOTY in 2010 with 293k votes just 3 years ago, does AP really need a campaign as his supporters already know who he is and what he stands for.
By:
There will also be an opportunity for AP to win again in a few years, when he retires or if he reaches 5000 winners.
By:
With all the cycling votes the last few years Froome looks good for top 3 tonight.
By:
the cycling fans who voted for cav and wiggo dont seem to like froome......
when a p won spoty , facebook was ablaze with campaigns, and carried on throughout the day until vote was closed. 2 nd place should be a good betting heat , as should top 3 |
By:
It's pretty much accepted among any cycling fans who aren't complete morons that Froome is a doper. He's also not in many people's eyes actually British.
Many drawbacks to all of the rest of the 10, 2nd and 3rd could be anyone apart from Bell, Cockroft, Ohudrugscheatuogo (and Murray obvs) |
By:
By:
Basically to do with how much ridiculously better than the rest he is all of a sudden Nige after mystery illness and also setting times that have never been done before (or only done by dopers)
By:
I can see Leigh Halfpenny and/or Mo Farah getting many more votes than people might expect tonight.
No matter who you would like to win and whatever your position, good luck to one and all tonight. |
By:
Neck on line : Percentage guesses : Murray - 57%, Farah - 9%, AP - 8%, Rest - 26%, anyone else wanna play. I'll donate a fiver to the winner's choice.

of charity that should add.
