Start this morning at 1000.

Would have loved Totten v Mann to have been a TV table, but alas it's not.  Zizins v Dylboy the very obvious pick of those that are.

Not around for the first part of this evening, so likely won't do much, if anything, in this first session.

never forgiven STEVENS, few years back i think like 2rd v higgins , and he had a few frames lead, and was certain to go further ahead in next frame, he had a good lead and a sitter colour, but the 147 was on, the black wasnt really on, but what did he do, went for the glory instead of making certain of the frame, needless to say he missed, higgins cleared up and from then on won nearly every frame

Report Latalomne April 17, 2025 9:37 AM BST
The Ronnie v Ali H2H is ridiculously one-sided, and Ali was awful throughout qualifying.

Who knows what you're going to get from Ronnie, if he even turns up, though?

Judd's not been playing well, Robbo's in and out....  You can pick holes in most of the "top" players, IMHO.

No-one's scoring better than Zhao since his return.  The only thing is, he's not really played anybody top class yet.
Report Latalomne April 17, 2025 9:54 AM BST
Unless MJW's had his eyes lasered since his last outing, odds-against Wu is huge.

I'm liking Smurphy's price 25/1 so that my main bet.

O'connor should go well, even though a tough 1st round with Higgs.

Last years finalist Jak Jones has a horrible draw, but that didnt stop him last year...

Fail to see how Ronnie can be trusted at so short - Carter not great, but got through Q still.
He has beaten him in this event before too - the famous aggro match too, lol

I don't think Ronnie has any psychological edge here, most likely the other way around.
Report stu April 17, 2025 1:43 PM BST
Best time to lay Ronnie is in this 1st round match bet IMO - if he does win a match it will likely settle him and make him more dangerous
Report Latalomne April 17, 2025 1:47 PM BST
21-1 H2H and you think Ali has the psychological edge?!
Report stu April 17, 2025 1:49 PM BST
Yeh but it's that '1' that most likely Ronnie has sitting in his head Grin

(He's got 2 other championship league wins against him too, though they are a bit pointless I know)
Report stu April 17, 2025 2:28 PM BST
By psychology edge I'm also factoring that both (esp Ronnie) will know Ronnie is completely 'without a run' here, so has no match fitness
Report Latalomne April 17, 2025 2:42 PM BST
Fair enough.  Just to be clear, I'm not saying I think Ronnie is a good thing.  I am simply saying that I think the idea that he will fear playing Ali is fanciful.  It's a match I wouldn't play at all before the start.

I still don't buy that Ronnie's absence is due to getting used to the new cue.  Selby kind of alluded to it this morning during the draw.  "Ronnie is the sort of player who can pick up any piece of wood and be at one with it straight away".  Paraphrasing slightly, but that was the gist.

My gut feeling is that it's all linked to the breakup with Laila.

If I'm wrong and it is cue related, I doubt he'll turn up unless he thinks he's ready.  Why miss half the season and then still come back before you're ready?  Wouldn't make sense to me.
Report stu April 17, 2025 3:16 PM BST
It's true Carter isn't his hardest opponent, and I agree with a lot of your wider thoughts from the psychology side.

Although one thing Carter brings here, is that Ronnie would hate to lose against him personally too.
Report stu April 17, 2025 3:23 PM BST
Just out of interest, if the match is started (i.e. frames played) and Ron then decides to quit, the market isn't voided is it?

Though I know it would be void if he doesn't turn up (walkover)
Report Latalomne April 17, 2025 3:37 PM BST
Nope, if that match starts, the player progressing is deemed the winner.

We had a situation in the Gibraltar Open a few years back, can't remember who, but flights were diverted to Span, and someone had failed to notify WST that they weren't going to make the match.  The ref was present, the opponent was present, the opponent got given the first frame due to late arrival, and the subsequent frames at timed intervals thereafter.  Fella not even in the country deemed (for betting purposes) a loser.
Report stu April 17, 2025 3:38 PM BST
Ok cheers.

Just that with Ron, that possibility has to be considered I reckon!

Was trying to respond to this. Nail on head as usual, i reckon. Nobody better in the game than tearing up the mugs than Zhao right now, but top guys will be licking their lips at amount of chances he'll gift them. Unless i'm not up to speed and he's maturing and tightening up his game. No clue really, but happy to watch and find out.

in the past there was a tournament in Pontins  Prestatyn n wales held every year, can anyone tell me if it was the world champs qualifiers ?

There were loads of tournaments, amateur, pro, pro-am played in Prestatyn over the decades, including World and other main tour event qualifiers. World qualifiers were played right after xmas, first week of janurary iirc, players referred to it as the "cubicle", as opposed to the crucible. A right sh!thole in the depths of winter, think it lasted up to around 2011 or 2012 when WS rejigged things.

Ronnie confirmshe will play
Report Latalomne April 20, 2025 9:51 AM BST
Morning John, I didn't actually watch too much of his qualifiers, but the one thing that can be said about all of them was that there was a very high ratio of 50s scored per frame played, and that wasn't just Zhao making them.  That certainly backs up the idea that when he misses, he leaves very good chances for his opponents.  It's then all down to whether they can take them or not.
Report gjohn101 April 20, 2025 11:33 AM BST
Interesting mate, that does pretty much fit with my perceptions of him and the course of his matches. I remember a quote from Reardon one time saying how he always loved drawing Alex because no matter how well he was playing, he'd still gift you chances and it was all on your cue. Hard to play no miss snooker for 2 weeks solid. Kyren gone does open things up a bit more though and not sure Jak looking like a guy will take enough opportunities here. Still long way to go, though.
