"We look forward to collecting the huge oil money annually from our partners"
By:
Cooper we can probably expect a darts event in Saudi Arabia soon
By:
"Mark Allenhu Akbar" will surely be the cry from the fans.
By:
Given the stance on alcohol, I wouldn't be so sure.
By:
ok cheers wise
By:
Why not? Boxing fans love to get tanked up. The main idea of these deals is to bring events to Saudi so they can sportswash to boost their reputation and provide high quality events for the Saudi population. When they pay the big money for the darts event, that'll be the PDC happy and the crowd will be mainly Saudi

thought the whole point of 128 was this "level playing field"
65-128 playing R1 & 1-32 entering in R3 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() fkin hypocrite realised his ideas are boring as feck sh1te, now quickly backtracking |
By:
Bazza has to keep the players sweet. he's forcing them to play in Saudi. if it was a flat 128 there would be even more discontent. this is a nod to the old guard to get them on side
By:
top 32 get a bye to the 3rd round aka big incentive to turn up
By:
there is no chance whatsoever of alcohol at any event in saudi
period |
By:
I'm sure they'll all play for 2.5m prize fund
By:
I know. what's your point?
By:
which point?
By:
Saudi's buying sporting events for mainly Saudi's to watch live. This is all this is. There's no need for alcohol. The oil money pays for the events so the PDC/World Snooker/Matchroom Boxing etc etc don't care
By:
Would people really go and watch the darts if they couldn't get smashed??
By:
it's all the same anyway. Matchroom.
By:
I remain skeptical that native Saudis will want to go to watch darts, personally.
Saudis do drink. They just drive to Bahrain to do it. |
By:
without free tickets being given away or being alcohol being permitted thus lending itself to a european audience, a darts event in saudi will fall flat on his face
even worse than lakeside, if its possible |
By:
Unlike UK events where the gate, sponsor and TV deal are the most important factors; the Saudi events are bankrolled by the GSA meaning Matchroom get the money upfront
By:
don't know about you but I think watching darts is sh1t when the atmos is sh1t
By:
Boxing and darts are quite different.
By:
By:
if darts goes there, the arena will be banged out.
By:
I'll be a seller on attendance figures
By:
shot
By:
anyway you're missing the point here really, which is that Matchroom has sold its soul to Saudi Arabia just like the WWE did
By:
because no chance they'd be going there if the Saudis weren't paying through the nose for everything
By:
yeh looks to be a long term relationship now, just watched an eddie interview from 2day with kugan saying matchroom will be holding regular fight nights in saudi in the future
By:
nobody is missing the point wise
we know hearn will be doing well out of the event players too oil money making its way into the coffers as I see it there is no appetite for snooker, darts etc in saudi these are largely western interests western & arab interests generally do not correlate same goes for a fkin football world cup in qatar ffs it will be talked up to the 9s but trust me it will be a fringe event over here like the chinese events are |
