he's not got the natural talent others have but remember him saying after beating the divvy Trump 'maybe i wanted it more than him'..he's a trier, will always give of his best, which will always stand him in good stead against more talented, frustrating individuals

Fair enough point johnny though I’ve seen kyren put in plenty of stinkers himself, a few of them quite recently. Can be hard game to figure out at times

2/5 ron
far too big imo |
|
By:
see what they come up with ron -2.5 even -1.5
|
|
By:
Stick with the tons. Ronnie 02.5 at 5/4. Or play safe with ron on tons match bet at 4/9. That looks nailed on to me

think this final is priced up like allen won

By:
seen 4/6 for the high break john

That’s a cracking price wonders. I don’t believe they really get how much these table conditions favour ronnie, before you even talk about his talent.
I note that when kyren beat ronnie 4-3 in the 2016 N Ire Open ronnie still won the century count 3-0! I guess he could turn up and have one of his off days tomorrow but I really don’t see it. |

ron shortening now in the match market 1.32 to back

Fair enough point johnny though I’ve seen kyren put in plenty of stinkers himself, a few of them quite recently. Can be hard game to figure out at times wouldn't say he's thrown in stinkers per se..gj..just don't think he's as good as he's made out to be and can get well beat over a shorter format(as can the best for that matter) if he's not firing i've just never really rated him myself but maybe i'm being somewhat ungenerous but he does seem to raise his game against better players over the longer frame matches anyhow,it's all about opinions and it's an incredibly skilful game but it's still amazing how the balls can end up on the table, eternally absorbing with no 2 frames ever being the same |

Seems a fair assessment of wilson to me johnny, I’m not his biggest fan either. There’s just something a bit workmanlike about his game to inspire real admiration for me. I do sometimes wonder if I’m underestimating him, he is top 10 after all, but I still struggle to see him pushing much higher than that or as world champ material. I have been known to be wrong on these things before though!
Big match for him today, think it will give us a good indication of where his game is truly at. |
|
By:
Just reading back through the shanghai thread and recalling how wilson choked away 4-5 frames in that sf against ronnie who played that match and most of tournament in cavalier mode, still winning pulling up. How much of a bearing will that have on today? Think it’s got to have some effect at least.

Sorry gj, I can't agree with you about K.Wilson. And, I know it's easier to be positive about him now that he's in a big final, but I don't see what you don't see! He still has his flaws regarding cue ball control, he isn't as easy on the eye as M.Allen for example, and his record against the very top players is poor, but the more he plays them then the more comfortable he'll be playing them in high-profile contests. I think he will progress higher, and will become World Champion (although I've also been known to get these things wrong!). If he beats R.O'Sullivan today that could be the massive boost he might need to move to that exalted level. It maybe a big "if", but it wouldn't surprise me to see him win, although he will need to step up a level. And, that in itself says something, given how heavily he lost to O'Sullivan in their previous final and seeing how well O'Sullivan is playing and how much he's favoured by the playing conditions.

You said it yourself gobe, his record against the top players in sf and finals. Why wouldn’t I hold that against him? Maybe he’ll break that particular hoodoo in time, I’m not so confident as you and others that he will. Hawkins never truly did it, but perhaps wilson will. He has a decade at least to prove me wrong on that.
That last match in shanghai is as relevant as the english open final I reckon. I can recall kyren missing 2 fairly straightforward frame balls in that, he had a golden opportunity to actually beat O’Sullivan that day but wasn’t up to it. We’re giving it the same write up here, about how today is such a big day for him etc I don’t see ronnie being as vulnerable today as he was then. It could well be a high quality match but just think ron is too good either way. |

i bet kyran + 3.5 at 5t6 but never got what i wanted thought mad price

I agree gj about his record against the really top players, and until that changes it's perfectly legitimate to bring it up, and lets face it - if it doesn't change, he won't win the really big events. Beating an in-form, fully focussed, R.O'Sullivan in a major contest/final is essentially the ultimate test now for a player wanting to establish himself and be considered a top player. Wilson was disappointing in that Shanghai SF, and missed numerous opportunities that he may well have taken against other players. Maybe it was - The Ronnie factor - but he's still on an upward curve, and a win over O'Sullivan today could see him move onto a higher level. On the other hand, a heavy O'Sullivan win will leave those questions hanging. I hope he wins as I want someone, anyone, to break the status quo, and for me - Wilson is by far the most likely player to do it.

I will say kyren seems a very decent guy and definitely wouldn’t begrudge him the big breakthrough if or when it happened. Still haven’t forgotten that time he interrupted his game to insist the mobile phone offender was allowed to stay and watch the match. Very gallant thing to do.
Also true to say there aren’t many other legitimate contenders. I’m sure he does have a mental block against the very top players, higgins just ultimately seemed to outpsyche him in the world sf, but then those guys are approaching the end you’d think. It’s just like the tennis though, you’d like someone to come along and put the old guard in their place - law of the jungle as it were - and not simply take over by default when the veterans finally expire. |
|
By:
There's no doubt he comes up short against the top boys, and as you say the World SF defeat to J.Higgins was the best evidence to back that up. He was close, but came up short and always looked likely to. I do think he knows this though, and that's why I would expect him to see today as an opportunity rather than be scared of it. Even if he was to win, it doesn't mean he's now at that level, but at least he'll know he can beat the best when it matters - which he has failed to do so far. And, I couldn't agree more about your law of the jungle comments, the game needs a younger player to start taking on, and ultimately beating, O'Sullivan, Higgins, Selby and even Williams in these big events rather than them rising to the top when these players finally stop winning things.
|
|
By:
I remember kyren talking about how tired he was after the higgins match and that resonated with me because, of course, that is a mental issue, not a physical one, and that’s where the top guys continue to have the advantage. It was the same with hawkins, he looked shattered following his scrap with williams. There’s definitely a mental block there that those guys have to overcome imo.
|
|
By:
normally don't like taking kyren on but ronnie -2.5 @ 4/5 wrong price completely imo
think its been overplayed about ronnie not playing well...8 centuries in 16 frames he can't be playing that badly kyren has come through in 2 sub standard matches and beaten a timeform dodge in the other |
|
By:
Yes, it's a good point gj, and if there's anything in it then Wilson isn't helped by having to have played a tight match last night while O'Sullivan has had a day off. But, he looked fresh last night when interviewed, although this shoulder injury is a concern - a ready made excuse?
|
|
By:
Didn’t know about the shoulder. When did that come to light, couldn’t see any issue last night anyway.
Otherwise don’t see any obvious excuses. Neither does it necessarily have to be a defining day, kyren could easily play well and still lose. Just have a feeling ronnie will be on a going day today, he does seem to value this event so I’d personally be with wonders on his summation of the match above. |

He said he hurt it about a week ago playing football. He seemed to be flexing it slightly while waiting to be introduced. I've seen no evidence of any problems this week so it's surprising he mentioned it before this match in particular.
