The only true test nowadays is the worlds and ronnie has checked out each of the past 4 years so no, I would not say either his game, or even his mentality for that matter, is as good as it ever was. These mugfest bo7s might not suit some top players but they are grist to Ronnie’s mill. Suit his game down to a tee.

Yes, well said Ronnie - hopefully Hearn will take note, although I doubt it. G.Dott spoke about it last season, but it didn't get much publicity. The pockets are a disgrace, and the players take liberties as they know they can miss and still pot them.
By:
He said they should make the cloths heavier and tighten the pockets up, as the tables are too easy and anyone can clear up on these tables. He was also hugely critical of most of the venues following his attack on Crawley a couple of weeks ago. It was a really good interview.

Great stuff but it’s beyond time it was said. Very curious to hear if any players react to it, particularly MJW.

He said if the tables are harder it means you have to be more creative (which is always going to appeal to a player like him). It was Hendry who steered him onto how easy the tables are, but O'Sullivan really went on the attack, and I do genuinely believe he meant it and it wasn't just a dig at Hearn. Some of what he said - not just about the tables, but the tour, the 128 flat draws, the lack of time to prepare for tournaments, and the leisure centre venues was very insightful - although we've been saying it on here for years

Will have a look at it later. Pity it wasn’t on the bbc, just to look at the expression on Steve Davis’s face.
It’s only this year I’ve noticed balls dropping off the near middle jaws, that should actually be beyond the laws of physics. That is really last straw for me, it’s undermining the integrity of the game. It’s noticeable that hendry usually just stays silent in the comm box now whenever a “wide” shot drops, as if there’s just nothing more to be said anymore. |
By:
I've just watched his interview again, and one of his absolute gems was:
"It's a bit like putting Tiger Woods on a golf course with fairways that are 200 foot wide, flat greens and no wind, it's a bit like playing snooker on that" - pointing at the table. He also said anyone can clear up on these tables. |
By:
It’s a fair analogy. Whenever the septics host the ryder cup they set up courses with massive fairways and barely any rough to turn it into a total birdie fest. Total farce really but you’ll still have the comms wittering on about the amazing standard of golf we’re witnessing. It’s the exact same thing.
By:
Except that the standard of golf is far higher now.
As for the tables, and from a selfish point of view I would like to see them made tougher, because I trade the matches so more misses the better, but I don't think the average snooker watcher wants to see tougher tables, on here most of the people who post are traditionalists and don't like to see changes, I guess I feel the same way about how equipment has changed golf, and I am sure tennis traditionalists where not keen on the larger rackets? even track sports have far better conditions so comparing someone from the past to today is not just a matter of times recorded. But of all the sports snooker is probably the one most in need of the helping hand, because it was dying, very few players and a handful of events to play in, the game can be pretty boring to many, especially the Crucible tho not suggesting that should be changed, but if I was going to watch snooker I would much prefer a best of 7 or 9 with a choice of matches and could not care less about the size of the pockets. |
By:
The depressing truth is probably no one cares beyond a few hardcore on here. I was just looking around for a bit of reaction to last night and it’s just ronnie century this and ronnie century that, nobody can touch him, he’s greatest of all time. There’s nobody in the media bothers to ask questions either, up to recently the chaps on bbc would try to seriously argue the game hadn’t changed at all. The standard of snooker is not getting better, if anything it is getting worse. If they at least stopped blatantly lying about it, it’d be easier to accept.
By:
That's fair enough what you've said trebor, but when the game's 1 genuine superstar says these things, and says it so eloquently and with such feeling, then it's not just the ramblings of the traditionalists or people on here. There is a much bigger debate to be had on where the game is going - maybe for another day. Yes, Hearn has been good for the game but not everything he does is in it's best interests.
By:
The standard is getting worse agreed, but for the commentators or interviewer's or Ronnie to complain about many of the things he has does not do the sport any favour's, maybe even lose sponsors? and what he said would possibly produce a fine in many sports, may well do here?
Ronnie talks a lot of rubbish normally, but maybe this time he is talking sense, if Hearn was to change anything I think it should be to have just 64 playing each tournament, and then a 2nd division tour, any top 64 not taking part and the rankings from 2nd tour fill spaces. My reasoning behind that is to give the lesser players more experience of competitive matches, it is how other sports bring young players along, only problem with snooker is would there be any sponsors willing to get on board, again Ronnie saying that some players don't deserve to be on tour not really helping. |

have bet kyren wilson at 6t5 i dont think mjw head in right place
By:
Sponsors?! Sponsors = bookies and chinese money. That’s what bankrolls the business and they won’t be put off by a player uttering a few home truths.
By:
Yes sponsors are few, but what about the smaller or local sponsors who sponsor a local player and hears Ronnie say he does not deserve to be on tour, really helps I am sure?
By:
When ronnie went on that rant about the venue in crawley it actually made a few headlines in the sports pages the following day. The snooker itself rarely does anymore. Column inches are a good thing, most sponsors would agree I’m sure.
By:
it doesn't help but he's bang right, there's probably a good 50-60 of them who shouldn't even be playing snooker for a living
64 is a good number for a proper tour with quality events that are scheduled well the rest of them if they want to have a B tour that's fine by me but I agree with ron 100% that the facilitation of mugs in this sport is beyond ridiculous |
By:
1 bet for me on the snooker today, over 0.5 centuries @ 8/11 in mjw/kyren game
12 centuries in 43 frames on these buckets so far made this 1/2-2/5 I agree odds against kyren is a fair bet |

Bigger problem for game is if you look beyond Lisowski there isn’t a single promising uk player on the horizon. Not a one. From my own ireland, nothing north or south. Desperately need jack and wilson too to step up otherwise a flood of asian mediocrity is going to take over.
By:
No sponsor wants that associated with their tournament, I would suggest that the only reason most on here would see it as good is because it can be used as a black mark against Hearn, so why would a sponsor be pleased with it?

I haven’t even mentioned hearn once, people just want the truth for pity’s sake. So we just go on pretending how fabulous it all is, how amazing these great players are, just to protect the delicate flowers who are sponsoring it?
By:
It’s the sad truth wonders. There’s just nothing there. I’ve got nothing against the Asian players btw, but if the decline continues here the sport is pretty much dead imo.

And what is the reason there are no players coming through? far less snooker clubs now and the way youth are today, most sports seem to have less people playing there sport, down to internet, phones and Xboxes and the like.
Jack and Judd started playing snooker at about 8 years old and played snooker just about every free moment they had, not anywhere near as many doing that nowadays. tournament to play in most weekends as well, are they still about? |
By:
Thats part of it. They’ve been strangling the amateur game for at least 30 years in the uk now, I heard ken doherty speaking very well on that subject a couple of years ago. They need to get people like that together to appraise the issue and come up with solutions because everything they are doing now is having a negative effect. I don’t have answers but I’d find the people that might have and listen to what they have to say.

One of the biggest losses to amateur snooker was the passing of Malcolm Thorne, he did so much for Junior and amateur snooker, many of the players on tour now used to compete there.
