Big call by ref for that penalty, not convinced

I think thats pretty much losses to the saffers in every big game
Two finals and a semifinal… must be sick of seeing them by now |
By:
if Saffers play like that next week they win jack
but as the old boxing maxim goes..styles make fights likely to be a less turgid affair |

England very unlucky. Should have held on

Unlucky? South Africa were awful for 3/4 of the game yet the extent of England's ambition was to knock over a few three pointers. They never came close to scoring a try. Perhaps the best opportunity was the lineout where George launched the most ridiculous throw ever seen. Borthwick, like his predecessor, puts too much emphasis on meat head forwards. He weakened his own scrum with the trundling subs and, like 4 years ago, they were smashed. If what England were doing was playing rugby I'll stick to football. They wouldn't have improved the final so it's good they're gone.

I think they played at least 20 points better than in any other game in the last 2 years, it looked a different team. It was like watching a Barney Curley plot suddenly awakening. They were clearly the better team for 60 minutes and then were 2nd best at the scrums.

Auto - Boks were second best for long periods of that game. I still don't know how England ended up losing that game. They played the Boks at their own physical - messy game and almost snatched a victory that very few thought they could. Credit has to go to Borthwick to getting England within a point off the Boks. Did Farrell's back chat cost England the victory with the Boks first penalty????

Allegations of racial slurs?

By:
Several scrums went down during that game without being punished on both sides including with a knee going down, I think it was a contentious decision to award a penalty at the end which changed the result. It was a big call and I remember reading Nigel Owens saying that in those moments the referee knows what an impact his decision will mean .In my opinion it was the wrong call, but I know others will disagree. However in the last few minutes England had enough chances to put the ball in the South Afica 22 and let them play the length of the field but didn't.

hunt - on what we have watched over the last 2 weeks do u feel the ABs will be too strong for the Boks? I feel strongly the ABs will win it

Hi Kriskin, thought before the tournament they were the best team and haven't changed my mind, in fact I think they will win playing good open Rugby asI cant see the South African backs keeping up ! Hope you enjoying tournament

Its easy in hinsdight but some of the reasons England lost were their own lack of ambition(s). Starting Mahler and Cole was a mistake in that it was when the Saffers brought the subs on that they then started destroying the opposition in it (same as France game).Could have went with one or the other or even used them as subs and brought them on when SA did
The other cardinal sin that was committed was keeping on with the up and unders as any knock forward by England player then resulted in what...a scrum. After the first 2 scrums they should have kept with the kicking game but opted for touch and line outs in that at least they had half a chance with that-the scrum I think was 6 penaltys out of 7 scrums. |
By:
Agree with the comment below. A good tactic early in the game but garry owens with a few minutes to go and the potential for a knock on and the ensuing scrum was their undoing. Great pity for all England fans and even more so for all the players and coaches.
By:
To be fair scooby playing mahler and Cole to start with gave England the impetus to be leading until way into the second half..Understand what you say about the up and under but unless you are in your own 25 you are just kicking away possession to come all the way back to where kick was !
By:
i agree there was parity 1st half in the scrum-and it gave England a chance and a platfom. Everyone watching with a partisan bias knew what was coming though when they got to a scrum last 20 mins-the only odd thing about it is how England avoided a yellow card.
By:
Tbf to Borthwick there wasnt any other options to the way and style England were going to play. They maxed out on what they were doing and nearly got their rewards from it
By:
That was very tough to take, it was a very bitter pill to swallow losing in that manner.
By:
Kicking the Gary Owen into their 22 at end of game was an error
doing it twice, super careless. Pitch them outside the 22 and England are playing all blacks next week. Pressure tells, and little errors are magnified. Saffers coped brilliantly under the pressure, and maybe they got help from ref, but ref could have yellow carded English player for repeated offences such was saffers dominance in scrum last 25 mins. |

After reviewing the SA vs Eng game, one of the reasons SA looked so poor is that the SA Captain was a virtual passenger in the team and gave away two penalties and didn’t provide much oomph in the forward drives, unfortunately I think his leg (ACL knee) is playing up.
By:
Oh what a shame, and I thought it was because England played so well

Dream on

By:
When Kolisi was taken off about 50 minute mark the game changed as there was more fire in the loose forward combo.
By:
So it had nothing to do with Cole and Mahler being substituted at the same time !
By:
I'm giving the 3rd & 4th play off game a miss, both betting and viewing wise.
It's a bit of a damp squid rubber, in my book anyway. |
By:
Might get a bit tasty if Farrell hasn't calmed down; can't see the Argies backing off. Cards may be a good bet.
By:
Actually I think Borthwick has picked a team to try and score tries , definitely backing England to cover the -7.
By:
Must admit it's not a confident selection(in fact I actually expect to lose
) but I can't be having England at 1.41-so for price reason alone they are a lay for me. |

took the 1.17 about tom currys nose being covered in blood at any time during the match
