There aren't many aspects of the game where they have shown themselves superior to the Aussies. I think it's time to shore up the areas where they do have an advantage and play to the fact that Poitre will be reffing game three. It won't be pretty but I'd play a monster tight five with a mobile back row with instructions to get over the gain line and then secure the ball. Similarly I'd opt for bringing in both Roberts and Tuilagi in the centre and also get North coming off his wing again looking to punch holes through the middle.

It wouldn't be pretty but in an all out arm wrestle I'd fancy the Lions. They haven't shown they can go around the Aussies but they may be able to go over them.

Outside of that I'd scrum and maul them off the pitch. My team for Saturday if all fit. All areas where they have gained an advantage when the right men have been on the pitch:

Corbisiero
Hibbert
Jones
Gray
AWJ
Warburton (Tip if not fit)
O'Brien
Falatau
Phillips
Sexton
Roberts
Tuilagi
Bowe
North
Halfpenny.

Bench

Vunipola
Youngs
Cole
Evans
Heaslip
Murray
Farrell
Davies.

It may seem sacreligious to drop O'Driscoll but for me his time has gone at this level.

I don't think you can drop Lydiate.

Maybe SOB at 8, just for his carrying.

Roberts has to play.  I too would like to get Tuilaigi in the action but not sure of these two as a combination,  Perhaps have him on the bench.

Dropping BOD has crossed my mind...he really is primarily a defensive scragger at this stage, albeit a very good one!  But as you say it would be sacrelige and I can't see it happening.

Otherwise your approach makes sense.  And we have given no indication of having a whole lot else in our locker.  That said if Roberts did start getting behind them and we got quick ball, maybe then we could play.

I did give serious consideration to Lydiate but his great strength to me seems to be his ability to stop the opposition. It's a compliment when I say he is usually like a thinking mans Joe Worsley. I think my game plan lends itself more to a rampaging six because I'd be wanting to stop the Aussies getting the ball as much as possible with no more of the aimless box kicks for territory. Making the buggers tackle their ar5es off is the best way of stopping their own strike runners in the backs. People like O'Brien and Faletua would be instrumental in getting the go forward with Warburton/Tip hovering to secure ball.

Not that I expect this to be the team but I do think there is a logic to my selections and I hope to see Gatland being pragmatic for this selection as he needs to get it right.

Just play Rugby!!..Wales were by far the better team in the test series against the Aussies last summer yet in every game when they had complete control up front, they just sat back and invited Aussie pressure for the final quarter and you cant do that against such a ruthless outfit as Australia.

I genuinely believe this is a very poor Aussie outfit and the Lions are much the better squad yet they've somehow been sucked into believing these Test matches are won by narrow margins(a lot of the Welsh boys have a mental block, perhaps, over Australia) etc etc yet if they'd gone for the jugular in both tests and just put constant pressure on the Aussie defense,i think this Australian team would have folded and folded badly.

Apart from one 10 minute period in the 2nd test, the Lions are superior in the scrum, they're holding their own in the line-out and are capable of dominating at the breakdown(with a decent ref).Stop kicking the ball away and play more Rugby....George North touched the ball about 5 times in the second test which is criminal.

I think it's too late now and the Lions have got sucked into a battle they're not going to win......but,imo,they should, and could, have won this series in a canter.

Agreed. The one thing the Aussies can do is be inventive with ball in hand. Ergo, starve them of possession and smash them up front.

Not sure Youngs deserves to go either, particularly if Corbisiero is in. Him and Jones bossed the scrum in the first test with him in the middle.

Youngs has been one of the top 3 performers of the tour for me.

And the Lions need to be a lot smarter.Take the rolling maul on Saturday......Aussies were warned if they bring another one down, somebodys going in the bin and what did the Lions do with their next 3 line-outs??....went to the back!!

As much as i love Sam,the Lions look a bit leaderless at times and you need a smart man to outwit the smartest team in world rugby. They got suckered into thinking we could win by brute force when i actually think we've got a load of tries in our back-line.The Aussies are well used to massive AB's and Boks smashing into them every year so subtlety was the way to go not the "we'll smash them up front" route.

The Lions, despite being a superior outfit in every department(bar 9 obviously) are, unbelievably, going to lose this series, imo.

Not wishing to be disrespectful but aren't you contradicting yourself there? I also made the point about the driving maul at half time on Saturday but doesn't that illustrate that we have their measure in the forwards and therefore should look to drive home our superiority? The driving maul is not something that is a speciality of Super Rugby and it seemed to show. In terms of fashioning tries I wouldn't bet on our backs against theirs in terms of creativity and thinking on the hoof.

I posted on an early thread about the tour that I was surprised BOD was even selected.

He has looked a shadow of the the World class centre that he was.

If Roberts doesn't make it then Tuilagi has to play. If they both play we have to have a back row that will be first to the break down.

Warburton is ruled out by injury.

Warburton being out means any thoughts of BOD not making the XV have to be sidelined.

Corbisiero's fitness is even more key this week than it was last.  I just cannot see us getting enough dominance at scrum time without him.

Looks a big ask for the Lions to me, yet for the third week running they are going to go into the game under-priced.

I'm just back from having watched the 2 tests over Australia.
While I'm going to have to watch the 2 games back to have a closer look,my feeling is The Wallabies have been the better team in both games so far(had Lealiifano stayed on they would have won the 1st test)
What really puzzles me is what's going on with The Lions restarts ?
They obviously had a game plan which they stuck to in the 1st test which didn't work,so I was amazed having to sit through them doing exactly the same in the 2nd test(Hoofing down to players like Genia is just asking for trouble)
I couldn't bring myself to back The Wallabies in the 2nd test, even though I thought they'd win as I didn't want to be sitting their wanting them to.
However, now I'm back I have to say I'll be laying the Lions in the 3rd test.
Had a brilliant trip, but I tell you what, Australia has become very very exspensive(£10 a bottle of MagnersShocked)

Bet you did have an excellent trip stewards.  Got to say I looked up a couple of sites online just to get a feel for prices and couldn't believe how dear it had got since 2001.  The more I travel these days the more I am getting used to London being good value and I never thought I would say that Shocked

Had a really fantastic time Thanks Vis.
Although as you say it's going to be long time before I would even consider doing another Tour, just couldn't afford to(and would agree London does seem cheap when you compare most things)
Amazed by the amount of Welsh fans over there(reckon they make up about 50% of Lions fans,so god knows where they get their money from)
I have to hand it to Wallabie fans, took defeat very graciously in the 1st test, and didn't go overboard when they won the 2nd Test either.
Pleasantly surprised just how much good hearted banter went on between Lions Fans and Wallabies.
Don't think you'd ever get that at Twickenham.

Have to say I was slightly disappointed with the State Of Origin game We went to.
Everyone had said it would be an atmosphere We had never experienced before, but as a match it was over by halftime, and the Stadium was basically 98% full of Queenslanders so for atmosphere is was a bit like the game being very one sided.
I'd pick a Lions Test over an Origin game.

Stewardsenquiry that's not even the tip of the iceberg , an average meal out is 30 bucks without including ur drink which would be 10minimum. A small bottle of water is about 4 bucks unless u go to a supermarket which aren't cheap either. ****g joke of a country run big greedy pigs it's a disgrace , u don't even get wages to suffice for living here . And there's no inplay betting aswell to top it off unless u have a phone on redial and money to fork out for large bills to pay to ring these pigs . Over rated place I hope it goes into recession it's a total rip off , would not recommend but only for a holiday

Gatland has kept his best side until last ... injuries not withstanding.

The non selection of BOD pleases me most - he was dismal last Saturday though there were limited opportunities

Even the bench is looking strong !

Agree , the team looks strong , bit surprised Tom Youngs has been dropped . BOD has offered nothing in attack and has turned into a defensive  centre . Davies will go much better at 13 .

Think the Lions will win now

Wow.  BOD not even on the bench, that's beyond cruel.

I'm not BODs biggest fan, and I see his limitations.  I even suggested he might be dropped.

But it really doesn't feel right.

My instant gut reaction is to hope Australia put 30 points on us and light up the Sydney night.  Convey 'Warrenball' to the dustbin of history.

I know my instant reaction is incorrect.  This is the professional era.  No man is bigger than the team etc etc etc.  He hasn't been playing that well.

Just doesn't feel right.  Cruel not to include him in the 23.

Keith Wood;

"I've been uncomfortable throughout this tour whenever Warren Gatland has spoken about the captaincy," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"He tries to depower it, he consistently says it isn't about leadership and that isn't the most important thing. Having been on two Lions tours myself under (former England skipper) Martin Johnson, I would have said the leadership of the captain was the most important thing.

"Brian O'Driscoll has been quiet in the two Tests but at every stage, he has been the clarion call once Paul O'Connell got injured.

"I just think Gatland has made a terrible mistake."

I like most of the changes.  It may just work, but is starting to look slightly desperate changing so many week on week against a much more settled Aussie side that is growing into the series.

wtf is keith wood rambling on about.10 welsh players is right they are in the team on merit, the best team in northern hemisphere, should gatland pick o driscoll on sentiment?total british mentality nz wouldn't do it cos they are winners same as Australians, and germans at football.and as for Scotland are you taking the piss they are **** hence no players in starting 15,the lions concept will eventually die because this happens every tour too many English, too many welsh etc etc.its the british lions and the strongest nation at the time will have the biggest representation get over it lads and support the team.maybe and its a big maybe the scots will be strong next tour and have a big representation.right got that off my chest now to supporting the BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS

Gatland has sure made a rod for his own back if the Lions don't win on Sat. I admire bold selections, but would have kept BOD in place of Davies. 9 must have been a difficult call with all 3 being average and whenever he's had a decision to make, he goes with the Taffy. Richie Gray sneaking in in the non-playing Scot replacement role!
By:

When: 03 Jul 13 10:08
yeah but we want to slate the manager every 4 years over selection, how can anybody make a real strong argument against who hes picked?
By:
Ozymandius
When: 03 Jul 13 10:29
It's very easy to make an argument for BOD over Davies.

* If Davies had lit up the 1st 2 Tests it might be different.  He didn't
* If Roberts and BOD were an unfamiliar partnership then perhaps Davies would make more sense. They're not.
* If BOD had played the first 2 tests outside a proper 12 and failed, then fair enough.
By:
Dylan1975
When: 03 Jul 13 10:41
Davies has a had a very good tour in the games v Australia hes not been as effective but him and BOD do a similar job.

Davies and Roberts have played together for Wales a lot more than BOD and Roberts have played together.

Theres no room for sentiment you have to pick the team you think gives you the best chance of winning, with Roberts fit its a straight choice between JD and BOD and on the balance of this tour and recent form in the 6 nations Davies deserves the place.

For the most part i like the selection 9 is still a problem position which is magnified because Australia's 9 has been so good but apart from that and the selection of Davies instead of BOD i think its the sort of team most people would have picked.
By:

Yes.  Frankly speaking, there is a lynching party gathering for Gatland in D4.  A lot of fans here are saying, feck the Lions, bring me Wales in Dublin next year, that's the game I want to see.

I don't condone these views, just trying to convey the strength of feeling.
By:

yes but its sad that is the attitude amongst the irish fans hes merely picked what he thinks is best team, and as for waiting for wales in Dublin haven't they been wanting wales scalp for years over gatland, very petty prob the reason wales are better than Ireland at the moment

By:

When: 03 Jul 13 11:16
at least on an individual basis a decent case can be made for all the welsh inclusions but the welsh coach picking 75% welsh players was always going to cause a few ructions, especially given wales's recent record vs the aussies.
