Having spent the past 8 years bemoaning stupid selections and inept play from England, it's a bit weird to see an England line-up and think 'not bad at all'. It's going to take a bit more than that to actually win a game in SA, probably in conditions that are not necessarily suited to a bunch of players who rarely see flat, hard tracks, but at least it's not instant doom and gloom.
Johnson and Marler are both very promising players and it's good to see them get a chance, but the pack does look a little short on experience. The whole team is a pretty youthful outfit to be honest, which is good for the future. As for SA there are plenty of changes and I'm not at all convinced it's a side that's going to hit the ground running. -7 isn't all that much on a clear day in SA though. |

Plenty for England to be optimistic about. I don't think that SA pack will strike fear into them at all. The Bulls are no longer able to physically dominate Super Rugby, as was the case for so many years, and they are starting from scratch with their second row partnership - a big change from Botha/Matfield/Rossouw/Bekker. No Brussow or Smith in the back row I'm amazed there's room for Alberts and Coetzee, but not Daniel.
In the backline, how Kirchner is selected over Lambie beggars belief. Steyn and de Villiers are both 12s and there's no room for de Jongh who has been the stand-out performer at 13 for the SA franchises. England have a pack big enough to compete, two centres who won't shy away from a physical conflict and have selected players in form. Best chance of an away win for me. |

quite happy with +7.5 for a play & can see the ingerland taking a test match, not sure it'll be this one tbh but dont see them going down 0/3. a decent mix of bosh & pace from ingerland for once & good to see Mike Brown get the starting nod & a run-out for a Chief!
only down side is Youngs at scrummie |

Nice to see a fresh South African Team.
Superb front row, young but giant second row, Alberts(finally gets his run), Coetzee good season but Spies is the same old spies. Daniel not far off in fairness but hopefully get a run. Lambie not playing is strange, like scrumhalf and centre's. Need to develop a back game tho and Lambie can do that and not Steyn. Oh well we will see on Sat. |

is there anywhere to get radio commentary on this game?

Pumped to see how South Africa get on today.
Might start to put aside a few bob to get it on them for the World Cup 2015 |

Really fancy England for an away win today.

Habanna 1st jonny to score & ingerland on the cap, they talk of inclement weather but it's Durban so it'll be warm rain at least, not like Capetown.....

Eng at twice the price Wales were definitely looks of more interest.

My take would be Front Row: SA, Second Row: England, Back Row: SA, Half Backs: England, Centres: SA and Back 3: England.
I think England are better prepared and there are fewer unknowns about them going in. Could potentially be a nail biter and a decent in-play match. |

I expect a massive game from the new cap Marcell Coetzee, Alberts and Bismark up front.
Looking forward to seeing Frans Steyn at first center bash and bash and bash up that England Midfield. Really exciting to see how the 2 young guns go up against a pretty handy English 2nd row. Eben Etzebeth a giant of a man ranging in at 19 stone upwards and at least 6'8. Hopefully the back 3 will get into it but Lambie not playing astounds me. Steyn would go to full back and he should play fly for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqlQQEh0g5M&feature=results_video&playnext=1&list=PLB1F7F16271822D16 Coetzee for anyone who has not seen has this privilege this season. |

Comfortable SA win for me.

Would expect to see a lot of points in a match in SA with these teams. Might go in for over 42.5 at 2.0x on here

Is he any good? I've watched little S15 this season and had never heard of him before this year.

Combative number 6. Flys into everything. Reminds me a bit of Burger to a certain extent. One of these very quick but strong 6's.
By:
Would have gone for Brousow (spelling!) myself, especially as England don't have a 7 either.
By:
Not sure the manger gets on with Brussow and lets face it he has been living off rep the past few years in that Springbok jersey.
They have so many good backrows that I not sure he deserves his place. Alberts should be in there years ago or at least the Bench. |
By:
True enough but you could say the same thing about Spies. I like Alberts a lot. A good old fashioned wrecking ball

Anyone know the weather?

By:
Pissing rain. Great....i was hoping for a beautiful South African afternoon match.

Spies looks great rampaging on the hard ground of the high veldt in summer, but a passenger the rest of the time. Keegan Daniel is one of the few back rowers that they have who looks useful on the deck but they've gone for three lumps instead. Talk about setting your stall out.
Their second rows are nowhere near up to the level of Bekker/Botha/Matfield/Rossouw in recent years and the Bulls haven't been able to physically dominate teams in Super Rugby as in previous years. There is zero creativity in their backline, with Steyn likely to kick the leather off the ball all day long and two 12s playing at 12 and 13. England have shown that they have a pack to compete with anyone and have picked form players. Farrell is one of the best defensive 10s in the game and Barritt is rock solid up against crash ball, which is about all that SA will have to offer today. Mike Brown is possibly the second best 15 in the world under a high ball after Kearney and I think England have all the tools in their locker to deal with everything SA have to throw at them today. |
By:
I think Olly Morgan is better than Brown under the high ball, but he only plays about 3 games per year. Brown is bang on form though so good to see him getting a run in an England shirt. Lancaster could even have picked Alex Goode as he has a bunch of full-backs in excellent form, but dubious quality wingers.

I love these real physical bruttish games.
This is real Rugby! ![]() |
By:
Olly Morgan definitely the best English 15, like you say though RM; he's made of balsa wood! Shame.
By:
thats why Habbana to score first at 11.0 will do nicely
By:
COME ON ENGLAND
By:
excellant disruption by ingerland, first at the maul then the ruck! making youngs look like a whippet already
By:
I wonder what angles the Beast will scrummage at today.
Odd that SA didn't just hoof that right up in the air? |
By:
SA turning down the opportunity of a scrum on the England 10m line! That ought to give the England pack a mental boost.
By:
Good run from Cole to win that pen, but it came after Robshaw went backwards from a crap Youngs pass.
Is Barnes serious about players not going off their feet in Super15??? |
By:
Very solid start for England.
Certainly winning the physical battle thus far. |
By:
Breath of fresh air seeing a hungry bunch of talented young players, and not the usual old guard of perennial losers. England football take note.
By:
How did Walsh not see the blatant body check by SA before Alberts made that break?
By:
Ah but we were waiting over 8 years for this breath of fresh air, Danno!
By:
As I think a lot of us said in the six-nations, its not an all-conquering England team by a long way but after 8 years of no sense of improvement whatsoever it's nice to go into games thinking that we may actually have a chance, rather than being depressed before it's even kicked off.
