We hate Starmer for his actions and policies but we love him for what he's doing to the reputation of the Labour Party in the eyes of many of their traditional supporters. Reform is a bigger threat to the Tories than Labour has been ever since Gordon Brown wrecked the economy.

Labour had a majority of 174, will probably be 172 soon once the MMA MP is kicked out and we have a by election. The Liberals are basically Labour with a different colour rosette. The political opposition in parliament will not be able to do anything that will impact legislation for 4.5 years at the earliest. The disaster now is far more prescient.
Report .Marksman. November 2, 2024 5:30 PM GMT
Kemi will be a good opposition leader, who will hold the government to account (which is a good thing for democracy).  And she has four years to demonstrate whether she is prime minister material, something which is not obvious at the moment.  Nigel Farage is not impressed by her, but whether that is because she blames him personally for ruining the Torys' electoral chances or simply because she is an obvious threat to Reform UK, it's hard to tell.
I know that there are a lot of people on here who would want the parties that they don't vote for to have abysmal leaders, so that their preference wins.  But I don't.  So chances of a merger between Conservatives and Reform look remote.  I think we are better off with good leaders of all the parties.  I want this government to do well, but I have my doubts while Starmer is in charge.  I hope Kemi does well, but when it comes to the next election I could still vote for Nigel as he seems more pragmatic and willing to make the sort of deals which will be necessary in a future hung parliament.

Report Cider November 3, 2024 3:36 PM GMT
There aren't many left to pick from.

The main reason why I could not back Jenrick, and I stated before the outcome was that a lot of Tory members have moved to reform, and they would be more inclined to go with Jenrick if they had not. That's where the almost 30% not voting comes from, registered members who they have effectively lost.

I do think the one nation types will be looking to get their own person in, so yes it will be difficult for Kemi in the medium term. Her advantage is that they are almost as obsessed with a person's immutable characteristics as labour, liberals and snp.

Farage wants to be the main opposition in parliament from the next election. A lot can happen in four years, they can make gains in local elections, by elections, regional administrations eg Wales. They can easily peel off Labour and Tory voters and more importantly, get people to vote who sat out the last one. It's definitely achievable, whether it will be actually achieved or not, who knows.

My hunch is that she will only be replaced either at the ballot box, or after a spell as PM. Tories are now shaken by changes in leadership, and inconsistency.  Now they will want stability and after seeing how Kemi demolished Rayner a few months ago in House of Commons, she could step up to the plate and make things very uncomfortable for Starmer.  This will be the only thing going for the Tories in the next few years and I think they will take run with this, at least up to the next GE.
