USA purchased Alaska for $2.4 million. I don't think we are returning to those valuations but, if we do, we could not buy Alaska but maybe we could pick up a Van Gogh for the price of a bottle of absinthe.
Unlikely, innit. |

By:
Van Gogh was only 14 when the Russians sold alaska!
Turned out to be a good purchase but for many years the Russians thought they had better of the deal. |

Tesla do not spend money advertising - they use SM. Musk has 80 million twitter followers. He made $750 million yesterday on his purchase. On the other hand, ImSoLuckyLucky judges the shares to be 400% over-priced. They can't both be right.

By:
Whether intentional or not, the simple act of Musk informing the public of his purchases gets his followers in a head spin of speculative worship.
It’s a very dangerous thing, that blind following led to the 1929 crash. It’s why the SEC keeps a sharp eye on his muttering and why he was sanctioned to have his tweets reviewed by a lawyer before he sends them. |

So nothing to do with a surge in oil and gas prices ?

Inflation was coming regardless of fuel crisis but obviously speeds up
Everyone turns to the dollar, which gives you a big problem going forward I don't trade crypto but I can see the tech and I think eventually it will be where we have to go |

It won't take much for the scales to tip, and rate rises trigger a property correction. Then, expect carnage.

UK inflation rose to 7 per cent in March, hitting a fresh 30-year high after fuel prices surged and putting more pressure on the Bank of England to increase interest rates again.
The increase in consumer prices was up from an annual rate of 6.2 per cent in February and 10 times the 0.7 per cent recorded in March 2021, according to data published by the Office for National Statistics on Wednesday. The reading was above the 6.7 per cent forecast by economists polled by Reuters, and the highest since March 1992, when it reached 7.1 per cent. |

The recession tends to be a year after the yeild curve inverts, so people are just basing the fact interest rates are going to rise, but from historic lows
Thats perhaps why the FED are increasingly using hawkish language, like they arnt being listened to. But there is a lot of over inflated value in many stocks non more than tech. They have to put it somewhere though and as long as you arnt the last one out then they seem to be risking staying in. Crypto is acting exactly like a tech stock rather than a commodity, which is very telling, because it isnt blockchain thats being traded when somebody buys bitcoin, its finance. Thats a hollow dream if ever there was one, a bit like thinking both sides of the road are for driving in the direction you are going and not seeing the truck coming the other way. |

Sri Lanka’s securities regulator has directed the Colombo Stock Exchange to be shut for five days after the island announced a suspension of debt repayments and domestic gilt yields soared as attempts were made to reduce money printing.
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka believed “it would be in the best interests of investors as well as other market participants if they are afforded an opportunity to have more clarity and understanding of the economic conditions presently prevalent, in order for them to make informed investment decisions.” The Board of the Colombo Stock Exchange has made a request on April 15, to temporarily “close the stock market citing the present situation in the country.” Sri Lanka’s central bank printed over two trillion rupees from 2020 to keep interest rates down, blowing the balance of payments apart driving up inflation and stock prices (asset price inflation). When margin credit is available at low rates, the present value of long term assets go up. When rates eventually correct, prices come down to earth. However there had also been strong inflationary expectations in the stock market where the rupee was expected to fall steeply after the money printing, keeping export and similar stocks up. chickens home roost We're on the precipice of a global financial meltdown in my view. Unless you are very confident in what you are doing, and willing to 'risk it all', I feel like a defensive position is essential and move out of risk assets, at least for a year is prudent. I've mentioned it quite a bit, but be in something tangible, and/or produces value, and what people need to lean on whatever happens. If pound cost averaging for an extended period of time, plough through at discounted prices. But if you feel like you'll need access to the capital, take the most prudent position imho. |

With thousands of protesters on the streets of Colombo, soaring food and fuel prices and this week the first-ever suspension of government bond payments, Sri Lanka’s escalating economic crisis has shaken the governing Rajapaksa family’s grip on power.
But while demonstrators accuse Gotabaya Rajapaksa of mismanaging the economy, the president’s elder brother, prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, has accused restive citizens themselves of deepening the island nation’s financial plight. ![]() |
