if Angus Deayton had been an MP instead of a tv presenter... he'd never have lost his job Laugh

wiki

"In May 2002, the British tabloid newspaper the News of the World reported he had taken cocaine and had "whoopsie" with prostitutes. He was ridiculed by Paul Merton and Ian Hislop in the following episode of Have I Got News for You but continued as presenter. Deayton began the episode with: "Good evening and welcome to Have I Got News for You, where this week's loser is presenting it." He added later, "There is, by the way, no need to adjust your set, my face is this red. "

So it's Crispin Blunt, MP for Reigate and well known advocate of Mary Jane who left his wife and came out as gay over a decade ago.

He claims he was being extorted and says he is confident there will be no charges.

He's retiring at the next GE.

The Tory party is facing claims that a former chairman wrote to police because he was concerned that allegations of rape against an MP had not been properly dealt with by the party.

Sir Jake Berry told police one alleged victim was receiving support paid for by the party, according to a letter published in the Mail on Sunday.

He is reported to have written the letter shortly after leaving the chairman's job in October 2022.

The MP has not been named.

The Mail on Sunday reported that Sir Jake became aware of a series of allegations against an MP - referred to as X - when he took up the chairman role in September 2022.

He wrote a letter to police with former chief whip Wendy Morton, the newspaper reported, saying the matter had been going on for more than two years, adding: "The failure of others to act has enabled X to continue to offend".

An extract published by the newspaper reads: "There may have been five victims of X - who have been subject to a range of offences including multiple rapes."

It also claims one unnamed individual was receiving ongoing support at the expense of the Conservative Party.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, who was co-chairman of the party between September 2021 and June 2022, said it took all allegations "exceptionally seriously" and had an independent process to investigate complaints.

Speaking on BBC One's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he said that he could not comment specifically on the Mail on Sunday story, because "I don't know who the individual concerned is".

"I can assure you categorically it was not the case that when I was chairman of the Conservative Party, I covered up any allegations," he added.

The Conservative Party has declined to comment.

Council chief steps down after appearing in court charged with two domestically-aggravated offences against a woman

The leader of Inverclyde Council has stepped down from his role after appearing in court charged with two domestically-aggravated offences against a woman.

Labour councillor Stephen McCabe is set to stand trial next year accused of shouting at the woman, acting aggressively and repeatedly pushing her.

The 60-year-old appeared at Greenock Sheriff Court yesterday (FRI) where he pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and threatening or abusive behaviour, which are both said to be domestically aggravated.

A trial date was fixed for February.

Yesterday Inverclyde Council confirmed that McCabe has decided to ‘step back from his role’. He had already been administratively suspended by the Labour party.

McCabe has denied an allegation that he repeatedly shouted and acted in an aggressive manner towards a woman in Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire, on October 27.

He has also denied assaulting the same woman on the same day by repeatedly pushing her and seizing her by the body.

McCabe, of Kilmacolm, was given bail on condition that he does not approach or contact the complainer, or enter a specified address elsewhere in Inverclyde.

In a statement, Inverclyde Council said: ‘We can confirm that Councillor McCabe has indicated that he has decided to step back from his role as leader of Inverclyde Council.

‘Deputy leader Councillor McGuire will continue to deputise, following existing governance arrangements until a new leader is appointed.

‘Leadership of the council is determined by the council’s elected members. The next meeting of Inverclyde Council will take place on Thursday 5 December 2024.’

McCabe represents the Inverclyde East ward which covers Port Glasgow, Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village.

It is understood that he was administratively suspended from Labour pending the outcome of any investigation.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: ‘The Labour Party takes all complaints seriously.

‘They are fully investigated in line with our rules and procedures, and any appropriate action is taken.’
