Can we be out in any way, shape or form?

I don't see how anything can possibly go through before the end of October. This entire panto this week has been another pure stalling exercise.

if you want brexit you have to vote tory otherwise corbyn will be in power, talkin about a election should it happen

Errm, but we are still in the EU despite having a tory government since the referendum. Surely, some other party is worth trying now.
Report lord skywalker September 5, 2019 10:17 AM BST
we are only still here because remainer mps wont let us leave, gina miller started it with the article 50 crap then they voted in a tory remainer who tried to please everybody and failed and now boris who in my opinion had no choice but to suspend parliament to get thru a no deal, we will never leave with a deal because the eu wont give us a decent deal and the majority of parliament wouldnt pass thru a deal that involves us leavin the eu, so boris cant win

Report politicspunter September 5, 2019 10:21 AM BST
A new government definitely. One that represents the current wishes of this country. Only a general election can resolve that.
Report lord skywalker September 5, 2019 10:23 AM BST
Following Wednesday's votes, No 10 said the public will get to choose between a deal, no deal, or "more delay".

Downing Street said the prime minister will deliver an address later setting out the "vital choice that faces our country".

"It is clear the only action is to go back to the people and give them the opportunity to decide what they want: Boris to go to Brussels and get a deal, or leave without one on 31 October or Jeremy Corbyn arriving in Brussels with his surrender bill begging for more delay, more dither and accepting whatever terms Brussels imposes over our nation," the spokesperson said.

forgive me if im wrong but isnt a deal the same as more delay

We could easily get that without a general election, just allow Boris to replace the MP's that he has just purged.
Then he can go on to replace the opposition MP's with new Conservative MP's, sprinkled in with a few from the Brexit party.

Report lord skywalker September 5, 2019 10:26 AM BST

Yeah, so accurate. Suits the agenda for the left. Was the original vote and the European elections not enough to show what the majority of this country want?

The European elections are used as a protest vote. They were in 2014 and they were this year also. The turnout is abysmal and both the parties that led them ( UKIP and the Brexit Party) have failed to win constituency seats in Parliament.
Hopefully, when you look down the polls in the link I provided earlier you will agree with me that overall there wasn't much in it, basically margin of error stuff.

I also have a belief that we may not ashley be leaving the EU.

I think Brexiters are right in their fears. The Remain Camp is not really moving for a fresh referendum for the Country to decide. They may be at face but the real intention is to manoeuvre  the situation that we stay in the EU.

Another catastrophic mistake by a Tory Posh Bullingdon Boy and Eton Rifle!

He nearly gave the Union away and did not learn his lesson. Again personal ambition and Party interests triumphed over the National Interest and fear of Nigel Fromage and Ukip.

With regard to a single issue Referendum

There is a problem here with Parliamentary Democracy and Direct democracy. This has been highlighted by the Brexit Issue. The two do not mix.

What has been highlighted is the need for the people to get the Representatives they want. We have been lazy in the Western Democracies. Candidates have not been scruntinised and brought to book for their shortcomings. Our voting is tribal. Case in point The Labour Party under Brown and Blair did more for Big Business than the people they were elected to represent. They took us into an illegal war with a country that was not responsible for 9/11  that has mired us in sheite ever since!

The problem really with the system is FPTP sucks, basically making it a 2 party system. It also similar to eg. the US system means that many voices are in effect worthless, the ones that matter are those in the marginal seats. The tribal nature doesn't help either, ie. too many people would vote the same way no matter what, things like postal system don't help here as they give a huge edge the two main parties who just target their bases for easy postal votes.

Though for FPTP to change the political landscape would have to change massively, it would have to completely fracture for anyone to agree to change. As it's in favour for all of Tories, Labour, SNP to keep it the way it is right now.

And we are hardly in an atmosphere and culture that could possibly retune itself to some form of PR
Report n88uk September 6, 2019 11:45 AM BST
Well the whole system would have to change. Eg. over here coalition is seen as a bad thing meaning government gets nothing done, yet in many places coalition is the norm.

The Scottish parliament elects 73 members on a FTTP system and 56 on a PR system.

It was designed to make it nigh on impossible to have a single party with an outright majority, only one of the four parliaments has returned an overall majority for a single party.

I like FPTP

I think it has worked well for us. In this country we do not generally discuss Religion or Politics for obvious reasons. The Civil War destroyed many families and friends.

I certainly hope the Brexit debate does not destroy friendships or families.

I do like the fact that Parliament and our laws are under the microscope. There is so much to lean right now I think it is fantastic!

Suffering from insomnia last night after watching the US Open tennis, I turned over to the Parliament channel.

They were re-running the Lords debate on the Benn bill. There were a number of wise old heads, speaking in a calm and logical manner.
Quite a contrast from the other place.

Here are the peaks and troughs that the two party system delivers

How do you get balanced debate and policies from the Thatcher era majorities followed by the Blair era majorities ?
Answer is, you don't.

Huge swathes of people feeling that they are not being represented for extended periods of time.
And then we boil down the biggest potential change to the country in to a single Yes or No choice in a simple majority referendum.

You reap what you sow, we have no history of compromise by coalition and we now have social media to deepen and strengthen the divides on a daily basis.

If France did veto an extension, the UK would crash out of the EU on 31 October, unless parliament suddenly approved the divorce deal – or revoked Article 50 altogether.

And the 31st Oct No Leave market finally wakes up, just printed 1.19

It's still free money at that price.

Brexit is problem that cant be solved unless all parties involved are included. May and Boris have made no attempt to bridge the divide the country is very divided and will remain so for a long time.

And there you have it - No Leave 31st October market has now overtaken the No Deal 2019 market. The expiry is more relevant. Surprised it took people so long to realise. I've laid a bit more back below 1.20 in case there's the shock factor.

You'd be advised to be careful on these political markets - the date of May "leaving" was a farce on Betfair - so people on here unfairly stung I noticed.

Remember  Cummings  (i think) said they were prepared to break the law to achieve Brexit. We live is such turbulent times so much so that those who pronounced "Brexit is law" and "Parliament is sovereign" are now saying we are more than prepared to ignore the law and parliamentShocked.

Take your profit, be happy and dont be greedy  - (of course, that applies to all markets I suppose, but especially these ones)
