I never knew that lfc but come to think of it you are probably right. Are you comparing the British empire with the mongol empire? If so I think I have you in a corner.
In fairness I think a better comparable would be the British empire and other colonial empires around the same period in history. If Ireland had the opportunity I imagine it would have tried its hand at creating an empire too so you have to see things from that time in history. The same way you should see things from the other side of the coin when other countries were subject to being part of a colonial past. They cant just create a new country from day one after the yoke of its colonialism has been smashed. They need a wee bit of time to get back on their feet. |

You should know from your time in Belfast lfc that its one of those ironies that one of the symbols of Britishness (the black taxis) is a landmark on the Falls Road so some things are admired about Britain in even the staunchest republican part of the north of Ireland. The fact you can fit 8 people into a black taxi may have something to do with it though.

Driving a black taxi at night in Belfast was probably the most dangerous line of work in the whole of Britain at one time. Just a passing fact for those taxi drivers who thought a bad night was when somebody did a runner without paying!

Some people are confusing the EU referendum with a referendum on some of our immigration policy, a referendum on whether Farage is a top bloke, even a referendum on free trade. It's none of these.
It's simply a referendum on whether the UK should be a member of the EU. Nothing else at this stage. If we stay in, we're saying it's a good idea for us to have an 8% say in who decides our farm policy, much of our immigration, how big charities are funded ( yes, the EU is big in this ), and our trade policy. If we get out, we're saying it's a good idea for the UK to decide policy on all this. That's it. In any event the first thing that will happen on leaving is we'll want some economic and trade stability, so the PM will ask for a free trade deal with the EU-27, the EU will say yes but you have to allow free movement, and we'll say 'deal'. Switzerland and Norway here we come. |

From the comments of the group leaders in the chamber it was not difficult to ascertain that in two weeks time Mr. Cameron can get very little more. In fact a close examination of the debate made me wonder whether even this deal would be ratified.
Why do I say this? Well, a paper issued to me as Co-Chairman of one of the seven parliamentary groups makes it clear that the European Parliament believes that social benefits and free movement will be changed for the British using an ordinary legislative procedure. In English that means that it will need the approval of a majority of 751 MEPs. The first to spot this was the eagle-eyes William The Earl of Dartmouth, a long-serving UKIP MEP from the South West. William asked a question of Rebecca Harms leader of the Greens in the Parliament. He asked whether her group would support the proposed British deal. The answer was pretty clear: no. WARNING: It is crucial that we go the polling stations armed with their mobile cameras to film anything that looks even remotely suspicious. Such as:
1. People carrying large numbers of postal votes 2. Boxes of late ballots 3. Ballots with uniform handwriting 4. Burying piles of ballots under a newspaper etc. All of the above occurred in May 2015 and similar was reported in Oldham a few months ago. The establishment have a LOT to lose on this and if it gets close they will be tempted to revert to norm. It is probably too late now, but the electoral commission (itself ???) should have been pressured to call in independent monitors. Folks from New Zealand, Singapore and Oz would be a good choice for this. |

Leaving the EU would be a disaster for Scotland because 150,000 jobs are connected to it and Scotland trades £12b worth of goods..... I understand her point but she wants to leave the UK despite 300,000 jobs being connected to it and Scotland trades £56b worth of goods.... Nationalism certainly clouds yer judgement . |

Lets have a discussion on what your negotiating position would be with the EU over brexit.
Mine would be: We are leaving, here is Article 50 or whatever it is called. I would then contact each Government directly asking "If you want to continue trading with the UK tell us the terms you will offer" If the Commission tries to intervene I would tell Juncker that we no longer recognize his authority to be involved. That would soon expose their hand. |

cuddles dave and dopey george said time and again during project fear that a vote to leave was a vote to leave the single market. the logic been (and the EUSSR have confirmed this since) that the single market and freedom of movement cannot be seperated. well fine, we voted out, so lets follow the wish of the people and get out. if they want a tariff free deal that does not include freedom of movement in order to save countless jobs in the german car manufacturing business then we will consider it. but they won't, political ideology will come in front of economic pragmatism. so fk em.
