when the EEC was founded, barring the micro state of Luxembourg, all the member states GDP was very similar in size and in fact the Netherlands had the highest GDP of the founding members. When we joined in '73 along with Ireland and Denmark, yet again barring Luxembourg, everyone's GDP was of a similar size.
Since the turn of the century a further 12 countries have been admitted to the EU (almost 50% of the total membership), of those 12 only Iceland had a GDP on par with the original members. The others were mainly ex Soviet bloc states and their economies were in trouble, and as we have seen there was a vast movement of labour to the wealthier countries including an estimated 1 million Poles to the UK alone. Eventually they will expand the EU further to include Ukraine, Turkey, Serbia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania and they all have a far inferior GDP to the wealthy EU states. This means that there could be another 140 million people admitted who then have the option to move anywhere they want to work. This is also ignoring the possibility that further eastern bloc states do not also want to join. Their ambition is to have a state that is as big as the USA, Russia and China and it has been since the end of WW2. If they stuck to the rules that they made themselves then, barring Iceland, none of the latest admissions to the union would have been allowed anyway under the 1993 Copenhagen agreement and none of the others queuing up would get in either. As we have seen with the Dublin agreement and the Schengen treaty if the rules don't suit France or Germany then they can be ignored. To come is further erosion of the ability of member states to make their own rules. Although the Euro has been an economic failure, they will push on to make it the only currency in the EU, and that includes getting rid of the £. If the UK votes to stay in then the first thing to happen will be making us accept the Euro as a replacement for the £. There will be a European army without doubt which will effectively be controlled by France and Germany as they have the most votes. Did you know that there was not a World War 2? they want it to be taught in schools that it was the European Civil Conflict. Education will also be standardised through out all member states with everyone using the same curriculum. A European health service will also be established to enable any EU citizen to receive treatment in any country free of charge. The fear factor that is going to be used is trade. We import more from the EU than we export that would not change with a Brexit. Germany would no more stop importing Welsh lamb than we would stop importing their bottled lager. OUT please. |

I'm undecided. I don't know whether to take the flame thrower to our parliament for enmeshing us in this grotesque trough masquerade or to hop over to Brussels to the hive. Am oot and so is the flame thrower.

Lets hope Britain get their confidence back and the country that once ruled half the world can once again rule herself.
If she votes out as she should this should be the beginning of the end for the evil empire. |

I will almost certainly vote out on political grounds ( I think it is anti-democratic ). The only thing at the moment that would make me go the other way is if the alternative is to be in the EEA along with Iceland, not actually in the EU,Liechtenstein, and Norway.Switzeland is in a similar position. These countries have to follow practically all the EU rules but effectively have no say in what those are. That would be marginally worse than the current situation.

Out for sure. The only people who have ever had a benefit from the EU are those on the gravy train who are employed by them. The rest of us are saddled with the cost.

![]() Con - 11.3 million Lab - 9.3 SNP - 1.4 Libdem - 2.4 UKIP - 3.8 Green - 1.1 That's actual votes at the last election. If we assume that virtually all Libdem, Green and SNP will vote to stay that's 5 million votes. If virtually all Ukipers vote to go that's 4 million. So the pollsters i think need to be asking the 20 million Lab, Con voters which way they will vote rather than just randomnly phoning anyone, if they were to consistently get 60%+ from both sets then we are likely leaving. They should also poll exclusively people who did not vote at the election and normally don't bother, ask them if they intend to vote at this referendum and if so which way. I think the ones that will vote here the vast majority will be out. This randomn polling at the moment is simply no good. Personally i think more than 60% of tory voters will vote to leave, but of Labour voters i don't know. |

They will vote to stay in.
|
|

Labour, Libdem, Green and SNP will all vote to stay in, almost 100%.
Even if Con. and UKIP votes out 100%, and they wont (Con closer to 50%) it will not be enough. |

In.
The EU is quite possibly the only positive political achievement on the Planet since 1945. Whether the UK deserves to be remain member is debatable, but if they'll have us we should be very grateful. |
|
By:
A lot of labour supporters will vote out lfc.
|
|
By:
Very few of todays Labour voters will vote voteout. If 9.3 million voted labour at the last election 9 mill. will vote to stay along with all SNP and lib etc....impossible for conand ukip to get close unless they all vote out..and even then may not be enough.

Holy shiit gus. I always knew you were an autocrat but bat shiit crazy as well? |
|
By:
not quite Elastoplast,
We got rid of Autocrats in Europe after slaughtering about 18 million of each other in World War 1 and we got rid of Dictators in Europe after slaughtering about 60 million people in World War 2. now, within the EU, crazy at it may seem, we resolve our differences by shouting at each other. |
|
By:
We got rid of Autocrats in Europe after slaughtering about 18 million of each other in World War 1
and we got rid of Dictators in Europe after slaughtering about 60 million people in World War 2. I presume the Iron Curtain and following its fall the various Yugoslav conflicts passed you by gus? You're wrong on most things so it isn't in the least surprising that you think the toothless talking shop that became the EU kept the peace in Europe post 1945. You couldn't possibly bring yourself to acknowledge the actual reasons why peace was maintained which certainly included NATO and in particular the benign influence of America post 20th century major conflict. As for the EU I don't mind them shouting at each other because that is just a sideshow. I am bothered that my own country associates itself with such a corrupt and profoundly anti democratic organisation. |
|
By:
sorry, I thought we were discussing the EU.
|
|
By:
That's one of your problems gus. You don't know what you are taking about. The EU didn't exist for a long time post 1945 and you were talking about and I quote:
"We got rid of Autocrats in Europe after slaughtering about 18 million of each other in World War 1 and we got rid of Dictators in Europe after slaughtering about 60 million people in World War 2." My emphasis. Free advice buddy. Don't bring a spoon to a knife fight or at the very least make sure you are proficient with the spoon. ![]() |
