Scotland have the right to self determination

A stupid post. When the people in Scotland votes Yes they will then decide what sort of Government they want not Salmond. If most Scots really wanted to go, and desperately pushing for it, then I could understand this but is this case? The trouble is that more people living in Scotland now seem to prefer to live in an independent Scotland than remain in England. You only have to look at the right wing nature of England and its Thatcherits, neo con mentality to see why. Scotland has (ever since the Thatch took over and did a few nasty things such as sack loads of Scottosh miners, ship builders and many other workers and experiment on the Scottish nation by trying out the odious poll tax on Scotland first) been pretty much a tory free zone. First they threw their hands in in increasing numbers with Labour. But labour has changed from the party Scotland voted for. It was labour under Blair who decided Scotland should have a load more nukes (son of trident) dumped there. It was labour (albeit with Tory backing) who continued the tory deregulation of the banks. It was labour under blair who started the privatization of the NHS in Englsnd and Wlaes. It was labour who took the UK into an illagal war in Iraq and splattered their civilians with depleted uranium. It was labour who sucked up to GW Bush, an imbecilic far right wing nutter; and it is now labour who have promised to match the benefits cuts introduced by the tories. The people of Scotoland have not moved away from the rest of the UK. It is the rest of the UK that has increasingly moved to the right and away from the progressive liberal and caring society that most people living in Scotland want to see. The consequences for England is that their preference overall for right wing poliiticians is that they are likely to be about to lose the place they like to dump all their nukes in and lose all the revenues (billions every year) from the oil and gas revenues. Cameron and Greasy are certainly bricking it. Certainly one, possibly both will lose their jobs if Scotland votes Yes. Cameron will go down forever in history as the man who was in charge when the UK broke up. he will forever be an ironic hero in Scotland and despised in every unionist house in England. |

Cot scotland has never voted for progressive liberalism you post is a load of sh!te.there are 5 liberal mps in the scottish parliament at the moment, what is the basis of such a factually inacurate wildly nonsensical statement.

Have you hit the buckie a bit early today Why do you choose to post such untruth flush? And of course do so with ignorant abuse about "Buckie and sh!te". Scotland has been far more progressive and liberal (small L) in its voting than England since the 1980's. So much so that in most general elections now there are hardly any Tory MP's elected in Scotland at all. Saying that this is not true is to deny basic facts. |

If the Yes vote wins I will bare my backside at Anfield during the half time interlude.
Turkeys don't vote for Christmas. |

Scotland has voted mostly Labour until the rise of Scotnat which is much farther left than Labour has ever been. No sane business that can move will stay under a socialist Govt.
|
|
By:
will this 'late swing' to the 'yes' bunch rile up the 'no' bunch, and make them more likely to vote?
|
|
By:
conspiracy
This is possible but nobody actually knows. At the moment and with Greasy's latest attempt to bribe the Scots with last minute panic promises bound to backfire, it really looks as if the YES may have it. You can still lay the No vote at 4/9. I cashed in my profit ages ago as I was never convinced the Yes would or could do it. I was too cowardly and should have led out. There is still a profit to be made in the referenduom arket by betting on yes or against No. No sane business that can move will stay under a socialist Govt. Business tends to be apolitical in temrs of where it is based. The political hue of Scotland is noy likely to be important when Scotland has a coprporation tax rate of a couple of points lower than the one in the rest of the UK. |

With respect Cryofthetruth I think your vocal opinions on here sum up the fact that the yes campaigners will be shouting loudest while the no voters will probably still be the more silent majority. I was in Glasgow for a week and there was more visible and vocal support for the yes vote over the no vote. But the no voters are always going to be less vocal and public in their views.
|
|
By:
If these polls are correct why is a No vote still the overwhelming favourite ?
Could it be that in the privacy of a polling booth the canny Scots will vote with their wallets and not their hearts ? |
|
By:
I agree with that concern and would still have "No" as favourite personally. However No has moved from being a 1/10 on favourite to about a 1/2 favourite now; and plenty of them get beat.

By:
If Cameron fears a yes vote then what about Miliband?
He got 41 Scottish labour MPs at the last election and would lose all he gets at the next election. The Tories have got one Scottish MP. A yes vote would hit Labour very hard indeed. Why hasn't cryoftruth mentioned that? Cryoftruth's glee as a Labour supporter in witnessing Cameron's discomfort over a yes vote, smacks of cutting off his nose to spite his face. |

Bringing Gordon Broon in to help Alistair Darling must be the biggest boost yet to the Yes campaign. I can't think of 2 more loathsome and discredited politicians to wheel out. They managed to bankrupt the country in about 2 years after Blair stepped down.

you wont be free Cry baby
you will simply be a vassal state of the european union why didn't you have a referendum on that and if you got it wrong first time well, you could just keep voting until you got it right ha ha |

Conduct the same poll on every single forum on betfair and I tell you what there would be a far bigger majority than 51-49 in favour of Scottish independence in every single one of them. Just saying.

The SNP won the election for the scottish parliament with a promise of a referendum. Cameron wasn't really in a position to deny this. You could argue that he should have been more prominent in the campaign but the labour lads thought he was a negative. Dougie Alexander and Darling have led the campaign. 90% of tories support the union it is the labour voters who are switching sides. |

I accept your point AG but I think you would also get the same result on mumsnet.
Most people find the economic arguments put forward by both sides as confusing and pretty marginal. Surely a referendum on independence is more a vote on the type of social values the Scottish people want and the control they have over those values. I personally cant find any argument which convinces me that Scotland should stay part of the union with Britain. |
|
By:
I think the yes campaign should put their whole focus now on the social values issue. The labour party can hardly oppose them on that issue.
