Lady Thatcher was a methodist. One of the first unions was formed by Methodists -
'Loveless and five fellow workers – his brother James, James Hammett, James Brine, Thomas Standfield and Thomas's son John – were charged with having taken an illegal oath. But their real crime in the eyes of the establishment was to have formed a trade union to protest about their meagre pay of six shillings a week – the equivalent of 30p in today's money and the third wage cut in as many years.'
the tolpuddle martyrs were sent to a penal colony in Australia for seven years. 800,000 people signed a petition to commute this sentence and some were returned. Some died in Australia.
Now LABOUR is getting flack from being too cosy with the unions. Really? Have they now become Tory Light? Is that the choice on offer today... to be ashamed of the working rights of man. In a world were half of the population of the world gets by on less than a dollar a day. Workers now ask permission to strike through the courts. Where is the working man's spirit? where is the Labour party? what do they stand for today?
Vote Blue or Red. That is what you get today. There is no difference. Just a different face at the counter to serve you every five years. Men where jailed and killed to gain working rights and now they bargain those rights away in the back rooms of whitehall. Going backward is the new forward thinking. New Labour.

Nearly all of todays so called Labour politicians do NOT know the history and reasons why the unions
came into being, they just join a particular political party and do not owe ANY allegiance to the party chosen,
E. MILLIBAND is a typical example, but I will bet that he knows the history of his religion from back to front,
he is SUPPOSED to represent the MAJORITY of the population and that is what a democracy is meant to be, also to
help those who are disabled or have mental issues which disqualifies them from doing a worthwhile job!!!!
I EXPECT the majority to be exploited by Tories and their supporters, because for centuries they have believed that
they were superior human beings, just like HITLER did.
It is time that we had an ENGLISH summer, as has happened in the middle east recently.

What has always puzzled me regarding unions and the labour movement, is why different sets of employment conditions have been allowed to go unchallenged for decades.
I'm referring to the staggering difference in the conditions of employment between staff and workers.

Why should a person who works in an office get full pay if they are off sick, when most factory workers and building workers skilled or otherwise only get the government pittance?

Civil servants get six months off on full pay, followed by another six months off on half pay.

Then at Christmas they rub salt into the wound by handing out turkeys for the staff along with a party, and give the workers zilch.
I can never understand why workers quietly but resentfully put up with this.
Does it happen abroad?
If not it would go a long way towards explaining why foreign manual workers are generally harder working than our home bred people.

Distancing the Labour Party from the Unions was started by reptile Blair. His few remaining disciples want to finish it off.

So then we have a three Party system where the parties are funded by Hedge Fund Managers, Private health companies, and bankers. Our vote and opinion counts for fk. all as it is; once we reach that stage the vote will be worth the cube root of fk. all.

They formed one then, the Blair boys and girls  took over to transform it into another Centre-Right party that courted the City for financial backing, and danced to the required tune.
We now have three of them.
Two are in coalition, and the other one is a pss poor job of providing opposition.

Come back Guy Fawkes.

Miliband suffers from the same malaise that BLAIR did, BLAIRS father started out as a communist then became a socialist and ended up as a Conservative councillor, BLAIR decided to hoodwink the socialist electorate by calling his party NEW labour, his lying still is reported by mostly right wing media who have recognised a TORY no matter what name he chooses to go under, there should be a law of imprisonment for lying to the the HOUSE OF COMMONS, that is where BLAIR SHOULD BE, IN PRISON.

The only party prepared to stand up for the a british worker is UKIP.

It is not as ironic as UKIP saying they are a freemarket libertarian party and at the same time trying to restrict the free movement of labour and imposing their social policies upon many unwilling groups of people.

You can allow free movement of people if employers were not allowed to undercut the prevailing wages and conditions of British workers with immigrant workers.

It happens for example in Italy where it is very hard to sack people and there are consequently less jobs for new entrants/immigrants.

So there are various ways of protecting British workers apart from simply closing our borders as UKIP implies.

Well it is the people of that same once proud nation who went all over the world invading and extolling the benefits of freemarkets and free movement of people by immigrating and encouraging it within their empire/colonies!!!

They helped in the demise of other noble cultures so why should our cultures not be subject to the same fate as those others?

The nation seems to be following to the letter that old biblical adage of reaping whatever it sows.

There is something terribly sad about Boris the Animals post, its a perfect example of what's gone wrong.

Everything is of its time and Britain civilised and brought order to huge parts of the world, rather than be proud of this noble history Boris is ashamed, not only ashamed but so full of self loathing that he seems to glory in the destruction of a fine civilisation, his own.

The other sad aspect is that this wrong view of history is being thought up and down England,English culture is denigrated and inferior cultures promoted.

I was sickened watching Blair apologising for slaveryAmritsar and a host of other things he had nothing to do with it but not apologising for all the things he was responsible for mainly a bogus war and the deliberate destruction of the British way of life and culture.

You are welcome to admire and be proud of our ancestor's imperialism and genocide for all you like but sorry you will not have any rational person agreeing with you it was a good thing.

Bliar had every right to say he was sorry for any of the atrocities in the history of mankind but my only regret is that he has not been taken to the Hague to judged in his role in on the Iraq war where thousands of lives and a fine civilisation have been destroyed.

Blair had no right to apologise about things that had nothing to do with him.

Your definition of genocide must differ from mine but even were we to allow your loose and exaggerated definition Britain still not guilty.

The US is the only place where you cold make any case for genocide and it certainly wasn't the British although Boris in his self loathing way is going to claim it.

"Boris is ashamed, not only ashamed but so full of self loathing that he seems to glory in the destruction of a fine civilisation, his own."

It is the way of the spineless, left wing coward.  They seek to apologise for everything and to everyone and have not one iota of pride in their nation.  They seek for the UK to be trampled on by the world as some kind of recompense.  And if Boris doesn't contribute enough tax to pay for all this recompense, then so much the better, as he knows the rest of us will have to pick up the tab.

I don't give a damn about your concept of nationhood and derive no pride in the fact that some of our ancestors may have been some genocidal maniacs who went to destroy foreign civilisations through out the world.

They were wrong to do what they did and I feel ashame that human beings can be so callous and selfish at the expense of others.

You are the coward for defending the actions of some bullies beating up weaker people than themselves and you should be ashamed of yourself for your lack of decency.

Boris do you still think it was the British that wiped out the Native American?

In wars people get killed that is not genocide,Britain as a colonial power was perhaps the most benign of all and whether ye self loathers like it or not brought order and civilisation everywhere they went and any country colonised by Britain was better for the experience.

The colonial days are over and were of their time but this apologising when no wrong has been done is the ultimate in capitulation and kowtowing but you only have to travel round Britain to see the marvellous feats of engineering the architecture the history to know that despite the efforts of Labour Britain still has plenty to be proud of.

Of course nothing in life is ever all good or bad.

i am sure you can find silver linings to slavery, WW1, holocaust etc so finding some positive results to our empire does not alter the fact that it was just wrong for our ancestors to invade other countries, exploit and impose to them your way of live.

My issue with you is your double standards regarding cultures.

You guys are the ones denigrating other cultures like islam for trying to impose their values upon other people but at the same time applauding our ancestors for doing the very same thing and more violently only 60-200years ago!!!

I recognise that the world is not evolving at the same pace and there are many countries like France, belguim, Switzerland for example that decriminalised something like homosexuality more than 200years ago while some other like Britain, US, Spain etc only did that over the past 50years. There are other countries like the Saudi arabia where it would probably take at least a hundred years before it happens.

I am not sure we can infer from the above that the French culture is 150years ahead of its anglosaxon counterpart and say 300years ahead of the Saudi culture.

Silver linings for slavery: black people in America enjoy the hoghes standards of livings of all blacks in the world.

WWW1: It established America as the sole superpower in the world and made them very rich at our expense!!!

Holocaust- Israel: The jewish people would never have been able to convince the superpowers to let them have Israel at the expense of the native arab palestinians without the holocaust guilt and sympathy.

Are the Greeks ashamed of their past or the Romans this seems to be an English thing.

Those experiences are far back they don't affect directly or indirectly any group of people alive.

England and France are the main countries that oppressed other people in near past that still try to wield some power in the former colonies so liberals in those countries will see the unfairness of the situation and keep banging on about it.

Slavery and the empire on the other hand still affect the descendants of those who suffered either directly or indirectly through lack of opportunities, racism and deprivation.

You refuse to see why our recent history and behaviour in the muslim world has alot to answer for their present actions and reactions.

The Koran contains as much hate speech on it as the bible does and people with a chip on their head can use both books destructively in they wish.

The islamic world is not as educated and secular as the west is but that is a matter of time and if we could stop interfering in their affairs and allowed them todo as they wish they won't export their problems to us just like you will hardly find other asians or south americans bringing all their problems here.
