Other people that will be able to tell you for sure but there's other money she will get for not working and being a bum ;) My br and sister-in law are in the same boat. She was going to start back at work today but handed her notice in. He's on £35k and she was on £20k. They worked out that they would only be £100 p.m.better off if she went back to work.

Yeh same as us about £150 better off if she went back, was hoping there might be a few benfits for her not workin.

Could she go on the dole lol

Go to the tax credits site fill in details and get a rough answer of what they will pay you!

wont get JS allowance btw although it will pay NI contributions i think.

Dragging this off on a tangent.

I think a lot of it depends on how well suited you are to spending all day looking after a kid. I know I looked after ours for a while and it can be duller than work at times. There are really enjoyable times, but when she is playing up and wanting to watch the same things over and over again you miss a bit of adult interaction. It can get just as repetitive and dull as work and add in some pretty dull housework and it isn't that desirable. I was quite looking forward to working again after a few months.

I know now that my missus is at home all the time, she really wants to work, and I don't think much of that is a money thing.

Now I am working again, of course I wish I could spend more time with my kid again!

Its the Mrs who will be at home. Just a small shortfall if she is so hopefully i run the way i have been last 12 months. But if i didn't i wouldn't have a back up plan.

My girl actually suggested that when we're married and a kid comes along I can quit work and play poker all day as well as looking after kids etc but dunno if it's quite for me.

Think I'd get bored, I've worked from home before and I could spend 3 or 4 days solid without leaving the house and it did get a bit depressing at times!

lol, she knows. You'd be lucky to get in an hour's cash between 7am and 7pm, and that is making the big assumption that you have nothing else to do in that hour.

That difficult is it? Ah well, by time I have kids both our mum's should be retired and happy to take kids on all day!

Well, I guess it is possible when they go to school. Mine started going to nursery 2 days a week when I was looking after her, but of that I probably only really managed one full day's poker from two because of other things. I suppose I could have put her in more, but there is probably less of a stigma in putting a kid in nusery to work than there is putting her in to play poker. And I think you should look at your priorities if you put them in nursery 5 days a week to play poker.

And babies/toddlers pick up a ton of bugs when they go to nursery, so it really isn't that certain that they are going to get in each day or remain there once in!

Oh and I should say it would probably be easier to play now she is 2 and a bit than when she was 1. She'd be happpier watching the TV now than she was then, but even then you can't guarantee she won't do anything stupid when you turn away.

And the stigma thing comes in, if she breaks her arm while I was cooking lunch I would probably feel better than if she did it while I was playing a $50 super turbo.

While this does not answer your question I will give you something else to look at.

If you wife has taken paid maternity (eg work paid not SMP ) and does not go back you should look up whether what she has been paid is repayable (usually the diff between pay and SMP), it may make sense to go back for a minimum time to avoid this.

Totally dependant on ts and cs of working contract.

also as FYI you are entitled to 12 months lleave now of which I think 9 is now paid at SMP as min.

Remember the most important thing is the growth of your child, i would rather put my kids in day care then put them infront of the TV.Poker is a job theres no shame in day care, but not giving them the attention or stimulation they need is letting them down.
