15:50, Exeter Scary Canary I'll be honest and say perhaps he is not the best bred bumper horse we have ever had in the yard. But he is a half-brother to a couple of 2m hurdles winner and has plenty of pace in his pedigree, being by 6/7f winning sire Resplendent Cee out of a 6f winner. So this 1m5f race should be a fair starting point, and he has been going well enough, though he is a big, backward sort. As ever, the usual rules apply to my bumper newcomers - namely, he isn't fully wound up - but this may not be the strongest of bumpers. 13:55, Sandown Jump City Middle distance winner in France but he had a touch of leg trouble after joining us, so he only had the one run last season. But certainly ran a race full of promise at Wincanton and at one point...

Clearly, chasing will be his game but this trip over hurdles is a good introduction for him under Rules. We have decent hopes for him. 14:20 Exeter Jump City A middle distance winner on the Flat in France in 2009, he had his problems before making his debut for us at Wincanton in February. To be honest, he hadn't been showing us that much before then but he certainly ran ...

We have had a lot of success with our novices in handicaps down the years - and that fact certainly doesn't seem to have been lost on the handicapper. Because all I can say is that my three novice chasers - Rebel Du Maquis (official mark of 148), Watamu Bay (147) and Robinson Collonges (148) - appear to have been handicapped on what they may achieve in the future, and not what they have done. And, surely, you have to give the novices a chance. But it is the handicapper that has taken no chances with their ratings. Take Rebel Du Maquis, for example. He has been given a mark of 148, and I can tell you now that he won't be entered in a handicap off 148, as he may as well start now. He won well at Cheltenham first time out and then won at odds-on at Taunton, and is clearly...
