My last visit to a race course before Leopardstown, a relaxing journey at this time of year.
We'll start with the 1.40. Here I like Myztique , she ran in a very good Navan listed race with the winner been very highly thought of, never looked to get in a blow but ran on well towards finish not been hard push into the bargain ,I think they knew what they were taking on there , Monbeg Rose looked like one to take on after her last run, ungainly head carraige and looked for all the world as if it was all a bit much for her ,even with improvement from that yard  I'd be happy to go against her...
Daliyan is my choice in the 2.10, I like this ones attitude and its last run was full of promise with Barry aboard looks worth a punt. Just Cause is a promising young who will be better over fences , but again he is one whos attitude I like and having run here before , always a good thing, I'll give him the nod . Finally to round things off its Merry Night in the bumper , not only is it a topical tip but I feel punters will be stepping Merrily into the Thurles night after this result...

Report keen leader December 19, 2015 11:15 PM GMT
I have taken 30% of the market covering the 4 that count....naturally with the jolly out, you are now tested to guess the likely sp's......I would give a tentative tissue of mystic, savingforv and late nite...all priced between 7/4 and 3/1....the market may come for one of the trio and it will tighten, my guess may be mystic as wadhams have a good record at this track and dickie is riding....shanandoa will be the 4th fav at around 9/2....the other 3 are 33/1 rags. I call this the santa claus bot.

I hope you all get money but when it looks to good to be true it generally is.

Back to Thurles.

12.40.
De Benno is locally trained, handles the ground and is on form.
1.40.
Agree with Workrider Myztique loves that ground, her only defeat was in a cracking race in Navan.
2.40.
I love improving mares and Perfect Woman fits that description, she's on the go a long while but seems to thrive on racing.
She was bred by an old friend of mine who Kavvie and Yummy must have known,he was from Newmarket On Fergus.
3.10
Haymount bumped into a good one last time here and has nothing to beat.
3.40.
The favourite Merry Night looked slow to me in Fairyhouse and is my Bismarck,he is back a half mile in trip a huge negative.
They didnt target him at two and a half mile bumper in Leopardstown which suggests he is not held in high regard.
Interesting that CheltenhamRoar has word for New To This Town as though the jockey is a negative the stable is certainly not.
Jury Duty comes from a stable that never shirks a Mullins hotpot and has Nina ( some ride on Commeragh Trix today )

There was a right crowd there probably the best of the year.
I wrecked the day by having a blackout.

I thought the price of Haymount was crazy so left it alone but 'twas the bumper that killed me.
I didnt fancy the favourite and was mindful of what CheltenhamRoar said here,I had a good look at New To This Town and liked him,I also liked the look of Articulum,Merry Night is an out an out chaser on looks.
I bumped into a corpulent gentlemen who is in the Harrington stable,he said no his money was on Jury Duty,I backed Articulum and had that horrible we all have had watching my net being beaten by my original selection.

Report mincer11 December 20, 2015 10:05 PM GMT
Teelin Star is some yoke , mother of Jesus , what a slow coach he is. It's hard to see him winning any kind of a race , as it's hard to believe he will ever find a weaker event . I'm ashamed to say I backed it myself, had a bad day also Dan but when your punting portfolio includes Pat Hughes Colm Murphy Mouse Morris and Sean Byrne, then you are really asking for trouble. What in the love of Jesus ever happened Colm Murphy, it's not long ago he was winning champion hurdles and champion chases, now you wouldn't back his with confidence in a 7 yo and upwards maiden in Kinsale
Report Tolmi December 20, 2015 10:23 PM GMT
Teelin Star must have been rated on its run against Golanbrook where it fell 2 out.Bizarre to say the least that it got a mark at all.

Its an interesting insight into this forum that a genuine nugget of information has gone virtually unnoticed.Anyone with a bit of knowledge as to how to trade would have been able to get a decent touch from Keen Leader's tip off about the malfunctioning bot.It enabled those who took advantage of it to put themselves in a position which is the Holy Grail for a gambler..a guaranteed profit. Many Thanks KL...it covered the Christmas presents for me!
Report wildmanfromborneo December 20, 2015 10:43 PM GMT
It hardly went unnoticed.
Pa Lapsy and Kavvie were publicly bathing their feet and lord knows who else was feeding.

I can't agree the holy grail for a gambler is guaranteed profit, that is the holy grail of the risk averse.
Where is the pleasure in risk free gambling.

If I had my way the risk averse merchants would pay higher commission, leaving the risk takers commission free.
Report cloone river December 20, 2015 10:57 PM GMT
It did not go unnoticed. They was over 60,000 matched by nine o clock in the morning.
Report Tolmi December 20, 2015 11:16 PM GMT
I said virtually unnoticed. The amount matched could have been matched by a relatively small number of people drip feeding bets into the system.
It must have gone virtually unnoticed on the forum as the normal inane postings when someone puts up a winner is absent.Maybe those who took advantage of the error are not posters  of the booooooooooooom type.
I think wildman you misunderstand what happened. What you refer to as risk free gambling is not actually risk free at all.In the vast majority of instances the trader can only green up when the market moves in the direction he thinks it will.If it moves the wrong way he is left in a loss\loss position. The ability to read the market correctly is a hugely valuable and underrated skill and enables a punter to optimise his profit.
This instance could best be described as a bookmaker betting over broke.Guaranteeing a profit was one way of taking advantage of it but equally a person could keep backing his fancy and end up with 11\4 about a 6\4 shot.
Report wildmanfromborneo December 20, 2015 11:32 PM GMT
I accept I'm miles behind here,I'm probably the only one here who gambles because I like doing it.

The last time a bot malfunctioned no one got paid indeed some of the risk averse gentlemen caught a cold, which is why I said if it looks too good to be true it generally isint.

Keen Leader is in a league of his own for winning threads,I hope he got plenty,no harm in some of these bots catching a cold.

The snag to me is Betfair are in cahoots with the bots, they want the bots to win,I wouldn't buy those Christmas presents just yet.
Report keen leader December 20, 2015 11:32 PM GMT
a few items,

glad some of you took advantage of real free money.....Wildman, I have no problem bleeding a bot, they are the jackals of this exchange and deserve the odd fleecing.

few items on Thurles

teelin star...his two pointing wins were freakish, I recall seeing the banned vet trying to get as much on as possible the first day at Kilworth. I know for a fact weld had put together an owners syndicate to buy him for 400k as a gold cup horse, even worked him on the old vic gallops with his rider atop. at the very last minute with the money in place, weld got cold feet. hard to say if teelin will ever win another race.

I did have a good punt on mall dini.....listening to chapman on atr he was prattling on about Haymount as a sure thing...why I just don't know.....he was a drifter at Tipp when winning a poor bumper and he placed second to an ordinary stablemate last time. those two runs were at 2 miles, and now all of a sudden he jumps to practically 3 miles against a proper stayer in mall dini. at 2 miles there may have been some justification for Haymount as a 1/2 shot, at 3 miles he represented a huge risk. once mincers pal was prepared to have a go on mall dini then he was a 6/4 shot in my book, the 6/1 on here was a premium price.

alas I did return some in the bumper. I had been told by the workrider that the Harrington runner rode like a slow yak in a schooling race a few weeks ago, as Wildman says "bubbly" confirmed this and those that I know in the stable were expecting little..i place laid it for  3 and 4 places and the rest is history. the runner up will improve a deal for the run and will be a  fair horse on nicer ground. I would remain sceptical on the winner and will be seeking to lay him at a future date to retrieve losses.

finally more free money tonight......first race at Lingfield tomorrow, the tissue fav is out...again the reconstructed market is offering value prices on the three that count...

.my idea of the sps are sherwoods 6/4, whos mickey brown 9/4, and western w 10/3....the latter may drift as newlands horses are sick......you can freely punt danvinnie(sherwoods) at 3.2 and Whos Mickey at 3/1......the santa bot is offering more goodies, naturally if you check the volume, you may note I have taken my fill....if you missed out last night, do take advantage this time.

....and a happy Christmas to one and all.

Report wildmanfromborneo December 21, 2015 1:31 AM GMT
They are not a gambling stable.

That horse was Our Duke who won by a wide margin in Punchestown,he was hardly stuffed in his winners bumper in Navan.
He was beaten by a right horse in Death Duty, beaten half a length, Nina poached an easy lead and was far more effective in the finish than Kate Harrington, there were three winners left trailing in their wake.

The unusual thing about this is the owners of Our Duke are gamblers.
Report CheltenhamRoar December 21, 2015 9:36 AM GMT
That's the one wildman, he's by Oscar though that's where the Oscar reference came from, well that's even worse so as he's clearly a very decent horse and they didn't know what they had, I doubt new to this town will be in the same league, that bumper didn't look up to much, I'd be a layer next time depending on price, but Jesse does ok with bumper debutants, she'd one of the first I'd look out for after the obvious Mullins and Elliot,
Meade not in the same league anymore.
Report mincer11 December 21, 2015 12:41 PM GMT

Ozy asks the wildman did he see wonky at the meeting. The wildman ignores the question and rambles on. Now we all know the wonk hangs on his cyber friends every word, and made a considerable journey to Thurles in the, more than hopeful, opportunity of meeting his hero.
What does the wildman do? He totally snubs poor wonky yet AGAIN. Shameful behaviour.
And after "napping" the 2-5 shot Haymount, he then tells us he went off him!!! Great after timing.
Then wonky leaves before the bumper after harping on about Merry Night! Would you leave a football match with 10 minutes to go wonks?

The first in Lingfield provided an interesting insight into the merits of greening up or not.Having no opinion on the race I merely followed KL's views.I backed the 2 he was leaning towards for the majority of what I could get on and had a saver on Westren Warrior.I logged on 10 minutes before the race and both my main bets were trading marginally above the odds I had backed them at.However I had backed Westren Warrior  at 4.5 and was able to lay it off at 2.48.I ended up with no profit/loss on the winner and the rest of the field with a decent profit if either of the 2 main fancies won.No damage done.
The day before I had greened up all round with a decent profit.

Some would have made plenty on Mystic Sky but lost today.

However the moral of the story is if you get opportunities like the last 2 days you simply have to play. Its your attitude towards risk that should determine how you play.It was Keen Leader's eye on the ball which highlighted it.

Given that over 70% of all bets through this exchange are bot it is a staggering number and has deviated from peer to peer in no uncertain terms in recent times.
The daq has been the "daddy" in bot terms probably since its inception,it is possible to play them(both exch) off each other though the daq takes a dim view of a little bit of the ould manipulation however.
Most likely it was an extremely greedy betfair bot that didn't get it right, why should the customer be winning when they are holding the funds.

all this talk of bots bores me , anybody in Thurles betting with real money would notice how often members of the ring to the ,MACHINE.
Daragh Fitz and Tracksports regularly do it in order to get their quota .
I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip to Thurles in a few years, the sight of Ken Whelan clearing the entrance area of silt was a precursor of things to come.
€15 entrance fee is in line with other tracks, 24 bookmakers formed a strong market ,I had no problem placing any bet I wanted and to my surprise unlike UK layers they don't have to hedge it into the machine before accepting the wager.
Good homely fare is served on stare supplied delph ware in a dimly lit canteen , price reasonably and good portion size compensate for lack of creature comfort.
track bias leans very much towards prominent racers with only the first winner making any ground in the straight.
all the usual big players in attendance including a few ex layers.
long live thurles and its quaint land that time forgot demeanour.
got word for the last winner but like most other posters wouldn't heed the advice. a small losing day but sure c'est la vie

Boring alright CC and i'd be from an era that wouldn't have a clue, saying that i'm fairly fascinated in the direction things are heading,it certainly seems to me to be evolving.
Glad you enjoyed your day there.
Nice thread and a real feel of racing from it with some great observations along the way also.
