Was driving through Tallaght high st this morning , and asleep on a bench outside Smyths toy store was a woman wrapped in a sleeping bag . Shameful that we cant look after our own , yet we seem hell bent on allowing economic refugees in and welcome them with open arms ,something not right.

Its a complicated problem but one certainty is that if Liz ODonnell and Peter Sutherland had their way the problem will soar.

Bringing in five or ten thousand migrants from the Meditteranean will cause havoc,the advocates never tell you once in they are entitled to bring their immediate family in as well,these families are extended and all are dependents.

They also neglect to tell you that it can't and won't stop there,once say the first five thousand are in this will encourage more and the same arguments will start again.

Ireland beginning to see the results of a lack in funding throughout the social sector since the bondholders had to be paid off. Like as in the UK, a conservative led governemnt is voted in. What do you expect them to do. Increase public funding? Both countries turning quickly into America. Unless you are already in the middle class, have your own home which is preferably owned, a well paid job and can access private health care, then you will be cast adrift of society. Look to America and you have the trailer trash syndrome. Do we want that here?

It's nothing to do with our own homelessness issue. A lot of our own so called homeless people have had opportunities in life and are not prepared to help themselves - junkies, alco's, petty criminals etc. I'd sooner see us help genuine families who just want to live in a safe environment and are prepared to integrate and work in our society.

You might not like the Irish homeless,you may deem them unworthy,you may deem them ungenuine but how do you know these new arrivals will be worthy,will be genuine.

Any chance you might house one of these families for a short period,then you will find out how worthy how genuine they are whilst showing us how genuine and worthy you are.

There are plenty of hard working families who have fallen victim to the present circumstances and have found themselves homeless. I work in the social sector. I'd think you'd be quite surprised to see the tye of people presenting themslves to local authorities and agencies such as MABS. Everyone, regardless of their backgrounds deserve a roof over their heads.

They have a home, Pa, it's just not an ideal one.  They are well fed, in schools and nestled to the bosom of a Social Welfare state that will suckle them for the rest of their lives if necessary.

There is no comparison with these refugees who are roofless and would be delighted with any roof, on the run from a War torn country that has offered them no opportunities .  They carry tiny amounts of possessions in an single bag, if that.  My cosmetic and paraphernalia bag for a dirty weekend away would dwarf their luggage.

To be clear we need to help both, not cower behind 'our own'.

Are these the same people you called starving.
Are these the same people who having settled in Turkey decide the benefits are better in Germany.
Are these the same people who shout Allah Akhbar
Are these the same people who flagrantly disobey police instructions.

One of my sons is very involved with helping the homeless , to such a extent that he took over  our kitchen last week to cook for them . He tells harrowing stories, lots of people with drink and drug problems , but many who simply cant afford to pay the rents been asked. He was given lots of sleeping bags by Rovers supporters, our house was starting to look like O'Mearas camping at one stage .
The Government are only paying lip service to the problem,one young lady has 3 children and her landlord sold up , which he is entitled to do ,but she was out on the street with nowhere to go and dragging these poor kids with her. They were put up in a hotel room on the north side of the city,the children attend school on the south side , she has no car so the children were missing school as well as been disrupted.This is not a case of drink or drugs, simply a landlord taking the option of selling up.The stress some people are under is unreal, affordable housing is the crux of the matter.

How much is this lady with 3 kids receiving from the State per week?

if there is a ref here to stay or go, people who McWilliams is talking about will vote like the north of England.

He doesn't say anything we don't already know, but it's a great summary of what's happening.
It's also very unusual to read something like this in a mainstream newspaper and fair dues to McWilliams for doing it - even if it's stating the obvious.

In his last sentence he calls for a debate:

I wonder will the poor be allowed on the airwaves (for which they pay for, under threat of imprisonment) to discuss these issues?

But there’s the rub.
Immigration is a class issue.
Immigrants by definition compete with the poorest local people in the job market, in the housing market and for access to health and schools.
This is a fact.

Economists tend to miss the central point, of immigration which is that while the economy might get workers, society gets people.
Therefore the technocratic language of the economy is not able to deal with the totality of immigration and can’t deal with the fact that there are winners and losers in this game.

If you have, like me, the luxury of writing for the newspapers and working as an economist, there’s little chance that a new immigrant will take your job.
If, on the other hand, I am labouring on the sites or working in a bar, there’s a serious chance that my wages and job security will be affected by new people coming into the country looking for work.

So for the relatively wealthy, immigration has been a boon.
There are more taxi drivers, more cleaners, more shop assistants, more nannies; in short, the service economy, the one that services the relative wealthy, booms.
But are wages in that sector booming? No.

The relatively wealthy don’t have to worry about immigrants pushing up rents because, frankly, the immigrants can’t afford to live in posh areas, so they compete for housing not with the relatively wealthy, but with the relatively poor.

It’s a similar story in schools.
Immigrant kids don’t, by and large, go to private schools.
They go to state schools where they compete for the state’s resources with Irish citizens.

These are the facts.
Immigration is a class issue, and the richer you are, the greater the luxury you have to pontificate about immigration because you are not affected – or if you are, you are affected positively.

When the relatively poor – those who are threatened by immigrants – voice their concerns, it is far too easy for the rich to dismiss these people as “racist’ or “xenophobic”, whereas maybe they are just voicing everyday real concerns.

One thing is clear: immigration is going to increase in the years ahead.

They better get their bryllcream out, their hob nail boots back on and hope some of the dastardly aspirational intelligensia (luvvies I believe they are called) can lead and find a way to put them to work in a sustainable manner in a hugely compeditive global marketplace.
