Good to see a bit of interest in the golf on here in recent weeks.
Similar enough event stateside this week, but quite a bit poorer in Europe. I spent quite a lot of time trying to find reasons to desert the market leaders in both events, but find myself quite top heavy on them this week. In Malaysia I did find it quite easy to swerve hot favourite Lee Westwood. I know he is a flat track bully, whose recent wins have quite often come in these far flung events, but in the main they haven't been in quite as good a field as this. I would make Bernd Wiesberger favourite, and have backed accordingly. A best of the day Sunday 67 gave him a share of second here last year, admittedly a distance behind the victorious Westwood. But whereas the big Austrian looks likely to hold clutch putts on a Sunday, the even bigger Englishman still instils little confidence. Not enough to be taking short odds anyway, IMO. Wiesberger comes here in tremendous form, with 3 consecutive top 6s. Its very hard to see him not contend, and easier to envisage him outbattling LJW than the other way around. Danny Willet finally got his win just before Xmas, and will be keen to get to the next level this year, and become a consistent winner. This event offers him a great opportunity to notch again. A couple of missed short putts last week cost him a higher weekend perch, but he showed himself to be still in that pre Christmas form. Given his fondness for this venue, he looks sure to go close once again. The 18s in Boyles was very good, with as Huddys says, the potential to have the win stake refunded. I find it hard to understand how Gary Stal is such a big price. 45-1 in Boyles, and even bigger on here, he is just far too big. 3 weeks ago he took down none other than Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy. Quite a feat, and in the circumstances it was totally flopped a few days later when missing the cut. He bounced right back last week to finish a fine fourth, once again showing how comfortable he is in contention. A cracking bet in his current form. 2.5pts e.w Wiesberger 12-1 1.6pts e.w Danny Willet 18-1 .8pt e.w Gary Stal 45-1 Tiger Woods will be the focus of most media attention Stateside. For Thursday and Friday at least!! Speaking of which, he is currently trading at a similar price to make the cut, that he used to be to win the event. I hope he wins. Very boring selections here, but its about finding winners, and I do believe all my selections are(or at least were) above the price they should be. I was willing Jordan Spieth to miss a few of his late birdie putts on Sunday evening, as he was destroying any chance of layers underestimating him this week. But SkyBet still saw fit to chalk him up at 16-1, and though not accepting the full stake, it was close enough. I filled the rest in at 14s. He looks by far and away the most likely long term challenger to Rorys dominance, and has done for some time. What he is now, is more confident at the business end. His bottle was never in question in my eyes, but he just needed that little bit of extra belief that he could close out these tournaments. He got that in spades before Xmas. This is a tough layout, which examines every aspect of a players games, and Spieth will always thrive in such circumstances. Jason Day could also be said to have not been missed by the layers, but at 16-1 he just about warranted backing. I would make him about 13-1, but do expect him to go very close this week. I firmly believe it will be a big year for the talented Australian, and he will be keen to get off the mark early. As he has done in previous years. Again, the tougher the layout, the more the cream should rise, and about 14 under should be the winning of this. I was hoping to delve further down for other selections, but such are the credentials of Brandt Snedeker, Graeme de Laet, Mark Leishman and Nick Watney, that I thought 30-1, 40-1, 50-1 and 80-1 to be more than acceptable. Tiger Woods apart, Snedekers record around here is very hard to match. He has struggled for the best part of 9 months now, but in company with Spieth last Sunday he showed enough, to suggest that he could be about to come to the boil again at his favourite venue. He was last man in, as I wouldn't have backed him at any less, but he looks sure to contend once again. De Laet finished in a tie for second here last year, and has improved with each event this year. The silly errors are being eliminated more and more, and the putter seems to be finding form. He will be contending again soon, and at 40-1 I thought he was one of the best bets this week. Mark Leishman finished alongside de Laet here last year. These tougher layouts are the time to back the Australian. He struggles at the birdie fests, as he just doesn't hole enough putts between 5 and 15 feet. But he finds greens more often than most, and that will be crucial here. His bottle is open to question, but he is due one soon. I just hope it can be this week! Nick Watney is also a past winner here, and has shown time and again how the layout suits. Jason Day 14/1 Course form all important here and T9 and T2 should see Day go well this week. Graham DeLaet 30/1 Same finishes as Day last two years so twice the price has to be value. Good show last week in Phoenix offers optimism. Charley Hoffman 50/1 Decent record here over the years including T7 last year. Been in top form this year already. Brendan Steele 66/1 2 good finishes last 2 outings inc T2 @ Humana challenge. California native who has played well enough here before. Seung Yul Noh 80/1 Has 3 decent showings here when not in the best of form including T10 last year. Wouldn't trust some of mine too much if they hit the front too soon but they offer good e/w value @ least. yeah, like KJ Choi 2011 Players Champ - a grinder - fits the horses for courses - last four at Torrey was T15, T29, T9 and T2 in the last five years. His 66 on the South Course on Sunday last year was the low round of the week. His back-to-back finishes in his last two suggest he’s cracked the code after 13 tries. Have added KJ choi @ 80/1 instead of the withdrawn DeLaet. Agree with padlock and catchme, has strong course form. I backed him a good few times last year when he often played well without winning. It's been a good while since he has got his head in front, I'd say he is due a win this year.

Andy Sullivan seems to face a soft 3 ball, beginning shortly.
Matteo Mannessero has some cracking form around here, but he is playing worse than Tiger at the moment, not getting near to a round of 70. Anirban Lahiri has never shown any aptitude for the venue, and didn't show much 3 weeks ago back off his Xmas break. Sullivan is in top notch form, and though its his 5th week on the trot, that will be more of an issue if in contention come Sunday.
