Bono is quite different to Geldof, it's a long time since he has directly asked anyone for their money. His choice of causes is both clever and effective, his learnedness on the issues at hand is first rate and he has amazing access around the world. Its hard to put a price on what he does for deserving causes with his free time; it's an enormous sacrafice. As regards his tax status he is 20% of a coropration with a global income and even if he wanted to be anything other than tax efficient, it would be hard to convince the other 80%. As it is, he does pay plenty of tax in Ireland and as he also chooses to live in Ireland for part of the year, spends a great deal of money here too. He reference the gambler in his latest album, he may even have you in mind; "Every Breaking Wave" Every breaking wave on the shore Tells the next one "there'll be one more" And every gambler knows that to lose Is what you're really there for |

I have found something I agree 100% with Wild man on, I can't stand either of them, yes losing his child is terrible though I agree but 2 me they are both 2 attention seeking bellends. Never knew Geldof was from Glenegeary though

Its terrible when you find yourself quoting Gilbert OSullivan but he put it better in Nothing Rhymed,he also managed to show concern for starving people before Geldof made it fashionable.. |

Yeah, imagine, Apple paying U2 in excess of a 100 mill for their Album to give as a present to their customers. Now, I don't know abut you, but I would have Apple down as a fairly hip outfit.

He is like all the other hypocrites roaring about equality when it comes to themselves it all goes out the window. Gerry Adams takes it a step further goes to an American private hospital for an operation and gets someone else to pick up the tab. Vincent Browne a former press mogul is likewise always bleating about equality but none of this waiting are hanging around public wards for him. Similarly the British Labour MPs who extolled the virtue of public education nearly all send their children to private schools. |

Not at all just stop preaching about equality,stop telling others to do what you are not prepared to do yourself.
If a family is prudent and chooses to spend their money on their children's education they should be praised not pilloried. Similarly if they choose to spend their money on private health cover they should be praised not pilloried. |

It's hard to know what it is Bono is asking you to do that he isn't prepared to do himself. His sacrafices for good causes are beyond extraordinary. I suspect if Bono was on an airplane with a bunch of African kids and the Oxygen masks came down, you would be attacking him for putting his own mask on first. |

The man has made no sacrifices,he has urged others to make sacrifices,he has demanded Irish taxes be diverted to his causes whilst hypocritically dodging tax in his own country. A firm believer in the maxim only the little people should pay tax. |

Nothing is ever as simple as it seems. Yes he did go to Blackrock but his mother died when he was young and his early life was far from ideal. Boomtown Rats had to live on their wits before they made it. He didn't grow up in poverty, but it was no picnic either.

Geldof claimed he grew up in poverty and was poorly educated,both untrue.
The fact his mother died young is sad but not relevant to his comments. He lived in one of the wealthiest areas in Dublin and was educated in one of its most exclusive schools,he hadn't a good word for his family,his school or his country for years. |

Its ridiculous to say Bono has made no sacrafices; the time he has invested in effectively pushing worthwhile agendas worldwide is enormous. He also gives generously to good causes in Ireland and worldwide.
He urges governments worldwide, not only to give, as you claim , but more to eliminate debt and promote trade. His tax effectiveness is a stick people use to beat him with. He would have to leave the band if he wished to pay taxes in Ireland because there is no way the other 80% of the band (corporation) would agree to choose to pay taxes in Ireland based on their worldwide income. It might be different if the income was generated in Ireland or they wanted to reside permanently in Ireland. Given a choice between the boglands surrunding Birr and the sun-kissed French Riviera...well.... I personally would not want him to give up all his wealth and dress in sackcloth and ashes. He is far more effective as a globe trotting rock star in sunglasses, opening influential doors and pushing agendas. If there is a finer Irishman, I have yet to meet him. |

Amazed at the knowledge on the forum re these ( Irish OK ) pop stars , including lyrics . Re these 2 singers , I only know one line from each as a hit line . But I guess hit songs have changed a lot from when we knew all the words of the songs .
They are well regarded world wise I suspect , dont know enough about either though to comment on their contribution to society ( Irish or worldwise ) . Guess its a slow Monday though . |

Interesting lyrics , have to admit I have no idea what they sound like sung .
A lot of the more modern music is a bit like blank verse to me . I like tunes you can hum or sing in the shower ( that includes liturgical music --How great thou art or the odd Ave etc ) . Everyone to their own I reckon . |

Anyway when they(BG & The Fly) attended the G8 summit 2005 and praised Tony Blair for the Iraq war they lost any credibility in my eyes as saviors of anything, Supporting any war is a black mark from me when it's driven by greed and control but he'll sleep soundly with 1 less believer. He is not a permanent resident for tax purposes, Wonks. And as regards how he is renumerated by U2, you can bet your bottom dollar it is in a tax efficient manner; i.e by way of a loan to a corporation in his name registered god knows where, or whatever is currently in vogue.
