Was thinking 1/4 was a great price for the Germans.

However, Schuurle, Ozil, Reus and Schweinsteiger are out for the Germans.   Lahm, Mertesacker and Klose have all retired.

They still should beat us comfortably, but can MON and I, Keano, sprinkle some fairy dust and get something.  Can we dare to dream?

Bigot? Do you understand the meaning of the word bigot gant, Ozy is no bigot, you don't like him because he loves rugby which is a sport that is the enemy of gaelic basketball. Go and watch a real game of football tonight !!
Report GANT007 October 14, 2014 6:53 PM BST
Rocket, why do you always make out one sport is an enemy of another. You may have a bad experience in Sligo but people will always find a sport they love to play/follow.

The big popular sports are not always the enemy.
Report Ozymandius October 14, 2014 6:54 PM BST
I mentioned in passing today that GAA was a parochial sport, must have got his goat, Rock, for him to call me out like that.  He is so pitifully defensive about the whole thing.

It's awful, Rock. Not to mention the appalling language on the sidelines. And the over enthusiastic coaching staff, usually 4 to a team,  strutting and screaming at the kids when they should just shut up and allow the kids to develop their own decision-making abilities etc.

Whenever I watch an underage game live, I can't help but laugh/cry.

It's good to know you attend underage matches in the UK.

And people criticised Donegal . To be fair , Germany dont seem to have much of a clue about dribbling past defenders --they are still allowed to do that , aren't they ?  Beating a man is a lost art , not confined to our own shores .

It is too hard to score in soccer .  Diminishes the game , especially for the spectators . Little to cheer about for either side in the first half .

Glued to the match even if it's a poor spectacle for neutrals, wouldn't have been one bit concerned about performance if we had grinded out the result.

You have to remember the performances we're coming from in the European Championships and the organisation/discipline of the team is much improved from that.Yes we parked the bus but you have to be realistic it's away to the world champions.

Report Ozymandius October 14, 2014 10:04 PM BST
They were mising an entire team .  See Opening Post.

And to try and detract from their merits as title holders is daft.  They played 3 group games in horrific climatic conditions in a Group of Death (portugal, ghana, USa), and then went on to beat Brazil and Argentina to win the Cup on South American soil.

Epic achievement.  Or a hollow title?  You decide.

Germany were excellent in the World Cup .  Any resemblance to their performance in South America and tonight does not compute --hollow performance . Unless maybe the Irish performance completely negatived them . But it took Ireland 85 minutes to get a corner .

Thinking of tonights match in Dublin -Donegal terms ( semi) . Germany's pockets picked late on , sucker punch  , well taken / worked goal . Happens sometimes . Rejoice in the result , might help later on in the series .

The term "hollow title" referred to the panels ( and posters) repeated assertion that Germany are the world champions .  Even the panel admitted that the term world champions did not apply to the German team we saw tonight . Cant see what the problem is , I made no comment on the German performance in South America , it was excellent and entertaining , my comments were only about them tonight .  Of course if you want to pick holes in posts , you just misinterpret them as you see fit . Nothing new in that , track records there for all who care to see .

'Hollow title' denigrates their achievement.  Which is ridiculous for reasons outlined above.  It was a great title.

If you want to say they are decimated by injuies and retirements and that their  performance tonight was not at the level that saw them win the WC, fine, agreed, say that.   Very different to claiming it was a 'hollow title'.

The nonsense that 26 and 6 counties dont dump past history and field one team remains an anomaly . Aware that main problem exists with the 6  , historically and numpty wise in the past .  Derek Dougan ( with George in agreement) attempted to get a bit of rationalisation on board in the eighties . Know he had a tentative arrangement with one of the greyhound tracks re venue assuming "Windsor" was not available for a combined team . Came to nothing , attracted the usual grafitti writers in the homelands .

In 1958 only 2 southern soccer players would have got on the NI team / squad . In the nineties only 2 northern soccer players would have got on the ROI World Cup squad . Swings and roundabouts . But if a "united" team existed at international level , perhaps the gulf between north and south domestic would lessen . Bonkers to throw the idea out of court  , eventually an All-Ireland league might breathe life back into both dometic leagues which are both in a parlous state playing and financial wise . Both NI and ROI are completely dependent on UK ( and odd EU neighbour) based players  , and long lost grannies etc .

We have produced  decent managers for the present  , Roy Keane pulling his weight I suspect  , for which he deserves credit .  Just think it would be better long term for all to be wearing a same green shirt .  Maybe a pipe dream , but who knows .  The golfers and the rugby lads have been lighting the path for years .  And they haven't done badly .

Rugby and golf can play as a 32 county team because they are followed by the (dastardly) Liberal Elite who can be relied upon to behave themselves. They are less concerned with trivial sectarian matters, more concerned with worrying about whether they can afford to send their son to Clongowes etc.

This does not apply across all sports.
