THE LAST of the 4 events in the ‘TEXAS SWING’ – after the TPC San Antonio, Shell Houston Open and TPC Four Seasons Resort, Irving and now the 67th time Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth plays host - the Crowne Plaza Invitational.
LAST week we honoured the great Byron Nelson, this week it’s Ben Hogan at Colonial C.C. - designed by Perry Maxwell and John Bredemus - it's known as “Hogan’s Alley” after the legendary 5 times champion. Not to be confused with the 6th hole in Carn-nasty, the PGA players voted it as one of their top 5 courses to play. Another Par 70 course with only two Par 5s - the 1st Hole and 11th hole. The course opens with a friendly Par 5 which (easiest hole on the course). However that’s where the birdie chances also ends - then the fun starts - from Hole 3 onwards, with a 247 yard Par 3 fourth hole and the extremely tough 481 yard 5th hole, likely to take back any shots that were gained earlier. It is a tight tree lined track with small greens, numerous doglegs, very well placed fairway bunkers and water in play on six holes. Like last week’s tee to green challenge, this is a real test of ball striking and driving accuracy is even more important this week. Course management in finding those small greens will also be crucial (within the Top 30 in GIR will be required) as will scrambling stats when the greens are missed. Strokes Gained Putting another important stat as those putts must drop. I don’t expect the 9th Rookie of the season to win this week - Sergio in 2001 was the last player to break his duck on tour here. Two of my favourite events this week, with the BMW coming from Wentworth, and Sky providing the coverage it deserves. The Colonial stateside has proved good to me the last few years, so looking forward to both.
Very little imagination in my selections this week though(Jeremy Chapman style!!), but it is very hard to get away from those towards the head of both markets. E.w Doubles on the fancied selections may be the way to maximise return this week. Starting in Europe, Wentworth is a venue where year after year a few players consistently find themselves in the thick of things. No one plays this venue better two time winner Luke Donald. Luke arrived here last year a 13-2 shot, and had gone off 8s the previous year. This time around we can get a juicy 14-1 in an almost identical field. Donald is in better shape than 12 months ago, when he had quite a barren time, and actually went on to miss the cut here. That is of no worry really. He has come to terms with the changes to his game, and it will be a shock if he doesn't grind his way into contention come Sunday afternoon. It could be worth keeping an eye on early proceedings. Luke is a notoriously slow starter, even in successful weeks, and it may pay to top up if he gets off to a relatively sluggish start over the first 9. When Luke was last successful here in 2012, it was Justin Rose who chased him home, and it could again be the US Open winner who gives him most to think about. Slowly rediscovering his touch after a series of little niggles, he has found his consistency over recent weeks. Arriving here fresh off a week off, I would much prefer his(and Donalds) chances to that of market rivals Westwood or McIlroy. Moving away from the head of the market, Jonas Blixt looks overpriced. Quite obviously a man for the big occasion, he could revel in the big crowds here. No course experience proved little obstacle to him at Augusta, and quite how he is a bigger price than journeymen like Joost Luiten and Ross Fisher is beyond me. They will never win Majors, Blixt looks made for them. Paul Lawrie had a poor 2013, and last week was the first sighting of him in quite some time. But he showed plenty of promise, and having threatened to win here two years ago, it will be no surprise if he is in the thick of things come Sunday again. Very little logic behind including Stephen Gallagher, but I just have a feeling he is going to be a factor. He had an excellent 4 days at Augusta, and may just be another who lifts himself for the bigger occasion. Terrible course form is slightly offset by the oasis that was his 4th place finish in 2010, and he is a better, more confident player now. It wouldn't be Wentworth if Simon Khan didn't get a mention, and he looks a cracking bet at 8-1 for top 20. Support would have been repaid in 4 of the last 10 years, and gone close on 3 other occasions. Coral saw fit to chalk up Zach Johnson at 18-1, quite how, I have no idea. I would make him an 8-1 shot, and was prepared to take anything from 11s up. I didn't hang around when the 18s appeared, as it couldn't last long. Zach is a standing dish around here, and in the state of Texas in general. It just sets up so well for him, and even last year when his game as a whole was well below what it is now, he still managed to finish third. Now finding fairways again with his usual accuracy, his approaches are benefitting, and his Midas touch with the putter has returned. He still rates a cracking bet at 14-1. I didn't think I would ever find myself backing Jim Furyk again, at least not in a win market, as he has really struggled to get over the line the last two years. But he produced an excellent approach to the very 18th at Sawgrass two weeks when knowing he needed a birdie to have any chance. He missed the subsequent putt, but he showed enough fight to suggest he may find a way to win if presented with the chance. And given his current well being, and that this course also suits him nearly as much as Zach, it would seem folly to leave him out. I missed Corals 18s, but 16s is still perfectly acceptable. And onto another short priced one....Jordan Spieth. The future world number one has been knocking on more doors than the local politician candidates, but he hasn't found his way in. Yet. I didn't really fancy him last week, but he arrives here a bigger price, and in my opinion with a better chance. His all round game is what you need here, and he proved he has what it takes to master the venue with a debut 7th last year. Backing these 3 may seem very unimaginative, and of no value, but I will be surprised if one of them doesn't collect. And to be fair, collectively they are still a 5-1 shot, and I believe that to be too big. I had to also include last years winner Boo Weekley at 60-1. He showed definite signs of life in recent weeks, and though he will frustrate on the greens, he will have more birdie putts than anyone else. The Senior PGA Championship returns to Harbor Shores Golf Club in Benton Harbor, Michigan, after being held last year at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. Two years ago, when Harbor Shores made its debut as a Champions Tour venue, the winner of the Senior PGA Championship was Englishman Roger Chapman. Another interesting subplot will be Kenny Perry’s bid to atone for last year’s poor finish at Bellerive which allowed Idoki to claim the title. Perry is coming off last week’s victory at the Regions Tradition – his third straight win in a senior major championship. Perry rebounded from his runner-up finish at Bellerive last year to win the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship and the U.S. Senior Open. These PGA Tour winners aren't so random. Here's how to predict who'll be next...
Brendon Todd's win at the Byron Nelson Championship made him the eighth first-time winner through 27 events of the 2013-2014 PGA Tour season. The influx of first-timers has made predicting a tour winner as difficult as it's ever been, but that won't stop us from trying. We took a closer look at this year's breakthrough champions to try to uncover any subtle trends, then based on those, we identified the players most likely to be next. But he does have to hit a lot of greens...... Distance hasn't been a major factor in recent breakthroughs, but seven of the eight winners (everyone but Todd) finished in the top 15 in greens in regulation the weeks they won and six finished in the top 10. (Todd, by the way, finished T-51 in GIR and only 75th in driving distance. Wait, how did he win?! Well, leading the field in strokes gained/putting and scrambling helped). Not counting Todd, the seven first-timers averaged finishing seventh in GIR during their wins. Starting of in Europe my two against the field are Rose 14/1 and Westwood 12/1,two players who have been playing some lovely golf the last month or so,if they continue in their current form cant see them not challenging come sunday evening,just hope their putting hold up during the week, Now on to America my two against the field are Zach and Dustin Johnson,as said already agree with everything said about Zach with his great course form,i wasn't as quick of the mark getting the bigger price,backed him at 14/1,now on to Dustin a guy ive backed the last two weeks without not getting anything back,really think he's not far away from another win,so at 25/1 couldn't but help backing him again this week. Ladbrokes also offer odds of 5-4 on that the couple stay separated for the rest of the year - after paying out at 5-1 that they would get engaged in 2013. Some of the biggest names in sport, music, TV and radio will become part of a very anxious supporting cast on Wednesday (May 21), when more than 50 celebrities tee off alongside many of the world’s best golfers in the BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am. The stellar mix of celebrities and professional golfers is poised to attract huge crowds to Wentworth Club’s famous West Course, who can see close up just how iconic figures from football, rugby, cricket, racing and showbiz cope with the nerve-wracking business of wielding a golf club in the company of Major Champions and former World Number Ones. Today’s announcement of the line-ups for Wednesday is sure to provide keen interest for the spectating public, who will watch sporting icons enjoy the thrill of the Pro-Am in a way no other high level sport can achieve. This prestigious event is now firmly established as the official curtain raiser to the BMW PGA Championship and has provided some classic line-ups. Two-time Major Champion and lifelong Manchester United supporter Rory McIlroy will be joined by former Red Devils players Peter Schmeichel, Teddy Sheringham and Phil Neville, while Francesco Molinari will play alongside Italian football legends Gianfranco Zola and Daniele Massaro, with Andriy Shevchenko completing the Molinari four-ball. The afternoon session will commence at 13.00hrs. The Pro-Am will once again feature the “Use Your Pro” ruling, giving amateur players the opportunity to call on their professional team-mate to play them out of trouble (at least that is the theory!). Each amateur is entitled to “Use Your Pro” once in the round and call on their Pro whenever they want; whether it be in an emergency, as a result of a wayward shot, or tactically, to get it up on the green on some of the longer, trickier, Par Threes. Jamie Birkmyre, Championship Director of the BMW PGA Championship, said: “We are delighted to welcome such a fantastic line-up of celebrities for this year’s celebrity Pro-Am and the fact that so many join us is testament to the quality of the event. It is an enormously popular day with players, celebrities and spectators, who have the opportunity to watch some of the world’s greatest golfers in action while celebrity spotting at the same time!” Peter Walker, General Manager of BMW Sports Marketing, said: “The BMW PGA Championship celebrity Pro-Am has become an event in its own right and is incredibly popular with spectators.
