the amazing thing about this current cabinet is that there are 15 in it, and at least half you would not know existed save for the odd announcement...did you know Frances Fitzgerald was in cabinet(token FG women obviously) and what Brendan Howlin does is a mystery(barring protecting the gold platted pensions of certain civil servants).

if you look at the composition of this Dail, mostly ex teachers, the 2 best qualified ministers for their port folios are Reilly in health and Shatter in Justice. Now neither come across as punter friendly in the media, however I have no doubt whatsoever they would be way ahead of the game in their knowledge and awareness of their specific briefs than any other TD in the Dail irrespective of party. Because both have decided upon reform, they are getting a hugely negative press and a key reason for this, is vested interests in both departments don't like their cushy nests being ruffled and prefer the status quo.

Perhaps, just perhaps, Reillys dutch like universal health plan could work....to get it into play it was explained to me recently, many individuals and companies that will lose out....to the states benefit....and these potential losers will throw all sorts of muck to defend their nests....with an ageing population something has to be done about health...the other political parties have no plans...so at the end of the day, an individual with a brass neck like Reilly might just be what the doctor ordered to sort out Angola and drive through the idea.

Shatter is a league apart from any other TD in legal acumen.....dull as dishwater but efficient at getting legislation through.....yet for weeks the Dail has been boring the pants off us with the penalty points issue, an old chestnut that has gone on for years...a wee perk of the trade for guards....I thought there were far more important issues that effect the lifestyles of citizens than a hullaballoo about penalty points and whistle blowers.

the alternative to the current political parties is independents....elect enough of them and whats happens...you in effect give the civil service total control.

as all things in life go round in circles and history repeats itself over centuries....eventually some sort of dictator may emerge in Ireland in the next 50-100 years, and only then you will get a complete shake up and a blood letting of sorts in the likes of the civil service.
