An all South Meath SFC final on Sunday - Summerhill v Na Fianna

Na Fianna have been a breath of fresh air since gaining promotion from the intermediate last season. They've played some fabulous football, working up big scores and put last years finalists Wolfe Tones to the sword in the semi final. Summerhill qualified for the knock out stages on goal difference after losing their first two games. However, they produced a brilliant display in the quarters to dethrone holders O Mahonys.

Its a tough one to call. Both play a fast flowing attacking game and have height and strength around the middle. The experience of winning the 2011 decider may stand to the 'Hill while Na Fianna are appearing in their first ever senior final.

Na Fianna have scored 20 goals in 7 champ games. Former Longford Town player Shane Barrett has scored 10.

Any opinions on the games this coming weekend?

Ferns Half time / Oulart full time in the Wexford Senior hurling final tomorrow.
5/1 with Spoils.
Of the seven matches they have played this year they have been behind at half time in 5 of them and won all seven. They like playing into the wind in the first half and you can be assured of a strong wind in Wexford Park.

Have taken Truagh -2 in the Monaghan IFC final today.

Tyholland upset them a few years ago but Truagh are a senior time playing at this level. They have a strong squad and some very promising young players that will be in contention for call ups for the county in the next couple of years. Maybe they can even spring Caoimhe Mohan from the bench!

Just tuned into the Meath final when it was 1-5 1-3, Summerhill look a bit more physical and obviously more experienced, dodgy free for Na Fianna near the end for picking the ball off the ground when it shows that the Summerhill defender clearly plays the ball with his toe.

I was in Dr Cullen Park and saw some spectacular hurling,Mount Leinster Rangers won both the minor and senior.
The senior outfit are right skilful, they surprised me they beat St Mullins 1-20 to 11 points, going on this I think Carlow will shortly produce a decent hurling team, something I welcome.

Will be interesting to see how Ballinderry v Scotstown is priced after the former beat Clonoe today.

Ballinderry will be favourites but this is a very decent bunch of lads playing for Scotstown and they are a young outfit that will improve. Hopefully they will get conditions similar to the county final but at the start of November, that is unlikely.

Some run through Ulster though for either team. Ballinderry will have to beat Tyrone Champions, Monaghan Champions, Crossmaglen (more than likely) and maybe St Galls. It does not get much tougher than that.

@Distant View
There are some intriguing pairings in the Ulster club.
Glenswilly v St Gall's
Roslea v Ballinagh
Kilcoo v Crossmaglen
Scotstown v Ballinderry

Roslea will be without Sean and Seamus Quigley against Ballinagh after both received straight red cards in a league match. They scored 1-10 of their total (1-12) in the county final.
Report Distant View October 22, 2013 1:10 PM BST
Interesting the fly.

Not sure how to peg Ballinagh at the moment as to be honest I never really looked at that Championship beyond Cavan Gaels as there was an assumption that they would win out. I don't think I missed an opportunity in the Cavan final as I doubt any research would have led me to the shock.

Scotstown looked as well equipped as any side from Monaghan to take a run at Ulster since Clontibret were narrowly denied against Crossmaglen a few years ago and they have more scoring options than Clontibret. The trouble is their draw but they should have no fear of taking on Ballinderry in Clones, especially with a big crowd likely to be there with Emyvale also involved in the Junior Championship on the same programme.

The Hughes brothers are well known and Donal Morgan is a fringe county player that seems to excel at the lower level of club football. The midfield pairing of Caulfield and Turley are both players that have featured for the county (Caulfield in the league)and are a strong pairing at this level. Nicholas Corrigan is a former county player that can still play a role at club level and is a good first target into the forward line (despite his size) while the real stars in the forwards are Shane Carey (great for the under 21 team last year and likely county forward in 2014) and Conor McCarthy, who was singled out by Kevin McStay for his performance in that horrible defeat to Mayo in the minor semi final.

It's a well balanced side and one that could dominate Monaghan football for a few years. The prices will dictate what to do against Ballinderry but they may well be 7/4 against or better judged by the 5/1 and 25/1 quotes for Ulster at the moment. Reasonable conditions also needed to facilitate scoring.

It will be interesting to see if the Down lads can shed some light on Kicoo now. They were rumoured to be suffering from a bad does of the flu ahead of the Burren game which makes the victory even better. It was only Mayobridge that even ran them close up to that as they beat them by 2 points, Corduff by 18 points, Longstone by 18 points, Loughinisland by 19 points after their opening win over Downpatrick.

Crossmaglen are having the usual "not as good as they were comments" thrown about but there was nothing wrong with taking care of the City side by 10 points in the quarter final and you get the feeling that they have just being doing enough since then.

Truagh got it done and covered the handicap against Tyholland at the weekend in poor conditions to take the Monaghan Intermediate title. I am going to do more work on that as these games (like Keen Leader says) can be wrongly priced.

@Distant View
Great insight, thanks for the information on Scotstown.

Ballinagh had already beaten Cavan Gaels by 1pt in the league. That game marked the return of Seanie Johnston!

Just seen your call on the Monaghan IFC final, good work. I am going to tip Killeshandra (Cavan) to make an Ulster final.
Report Distant View October 22, 2013 5:40 PM BST
Seanie is a bit of a poisoned chalice at the moment alright.

Truagh have a very good team for intermediate in Monaghan and will probably be mid-division next year in senior. The problem is that many are young players coming into the squad from good minor sides and these games against other Ulster sides in early winter are going to be tough on them. I would say that the depth in Monaghan means that intermediate sides are a little behind other counties and they are likely to be up against it in Ulster this time around.
Report Distant View November 18, 2013 5:12 PM GMT
thefly,

Were you at the Killeshandra game yesterday? It sounded like a very tough encounter with Eskra and I would be interested in your views on the Eskra team?

Truagh have sailed through their two matches so far, but the final will surely be a tough encounter.

I was disappointed with Scotstown as they had the beating of Ballinderry and being 4 points up with less than 15 minutes to play, you would have expected them to close it out.
Report thefly10 November 19, 2013 8:07 PM GMT
Distant View

Was not at the game but from listening to Cavan folk Eskra are a seriously fit team. A poor start (0-5 to 0-0 at one stage) and a couple of missed goal chances early on proved costly for Killeshandra.

I would not know much about Eskra. Centre forward Peter Hughes is their main man, kicked most of their scores on Sunday. They took Cookstown to a replay in the Tyrone IFC final last year and Cookstown went onto win the AI. Teamtalkmag.com (Tyrone GAA site) is very good for club info, match reports, manager and player interviews etc.)

What are your thoughts on the Ulster club finals this weekend? Glenswilly or Ballinderry? Can Truagh and Emyvale cap a memorable year for Monaghan football? Will Tommy Bowe be togging out for Emyvale?
Report Distant View November 26, 2013 12:39 PM GMT
I am taking a proper look through the Emyvale game today. This will be a tight match between two counties that are always strong at junior.

By all accounts Kevin Hughes has been immense and he is mad keen to win some honours for his club. Emyvale have some super young players such as Daniel McMahon, Ryan McAnespie (county minor last year and certain senior county player in a few years), David McAllister (county minor & very talented but a complete headcase) and Daithi Colton (county minor next year and a real talent). However they are weak though the middle.

Will do some more work work on the opponents and come back to you.
Report thefly10 November 26, 2013 4:17 PM GMT
Cheers Distant View. I agree McAnespie is an exceptional talent. Seen himself and McAllister against Cavan in the Ulster MFC and they stood out.

Sorry thefly, I did not end up betting in the games.

I thought Emyvale had a very good chance but they were 4/6 to beat a better side than the side they were 11/10 to beat in the semis, so I left it alone.

Very impressive win for Truagh and they must have a fair chance of winning it outright.

Emyvale travel to Liverpool now for the quarter final so I am guessing a Christmas raffle will be organised very quickly as it will be an expensive trip!

wouldn't like to call their next match but Ulster teams are usually tough to beat.

Carlow had a great football side in the 90s but it didnt benefit the county one iota.

O'Hanrahans brings back bad memories for me, my team Moorefield were leading by 2 points with as many to go in 2000, O'Hanrahans scored 3 unanswered points in that period the winner was a miracle kick from virtually the corner flag, I stared into the distance for ages after final whistle, couldn't believe what just happened.

O Hanrahans went on to beat the Dubs in the final and got robbed against Nemo, ref rode them.

I don't really like to talk about 98 brings back too many painful memories, SOS played alright but it wasn't his finest hour they played him out of position against the fastest man on the pitch Donnellan, it was touch and go who would get the nod either SOS or Quinn.

Wasn't Mickos finest hour either, he completely changed the team around to accomodate a patently unfit strapped up Nial Buckley, he should've started with the 15 that played so well against Kerry and if the need be then bring on Buckley as a sub, ah well we can't turn back the clock.
