In Defence Of The Religious Orders

Most of the clergy and most of those involved in religious orders were OK  individually, and some of them splendid  , and still are . But as with life sometimes the lowest common denominator factor enters into the equation  , and unfortunately quite a few citizens suffered at the hands of some malcontents ( and worse descriptions ).

That the state failed to monitor activity in certain quarters makes it partly to blame , so trying to right a wrong costs . Simple logic in my book , any cost I suspect is buttons compared with more recent malpractices which have put the country in hock . The perpratators of recent malpracices will probably not get the punishment they deserve ( so called "white collar " offences ) .

Hopefully we are reaching an end to bad practice , time to move on with proper rights for citizens , and proper checks and balances for all levels , including government and institutions . Think we are all more mature now than in the past where there was a lot of overweening genuflection to those who found themselves in positions of power .

While homosexuality today is almost cool back in the 50s and 60s nobody came out of the closet the stigma was just too great a burden when viewed from the eyes of the all conquering Catholic Church, hence why many religious orders became a haven for pent up homosexuality, these institutions were rife for would be abusers, the most vulnerable in society just hidden away from the world and made to feel like they were the sinners?.

My family background would be Clann Na Talmhan but I tended to vote for the individual.
In the past I voted for David Molony because I knew his family and respected him,later I voted for Michael Lowry who was a great GAA man but unfortunately turned out a wrong one.

Kavvies ire is solely directed at the Catholic Church and whether you believe in it or not you cannot get away from the fact it is a huge part of our history and tradition.

i dont believe in religion either.what gave you the impression i did.the one i have most experience of is catholicism so i feel i can comment on it. getting 3 "sacraments"conferred on you before the age of 12 was the first thing that had me smelling a rat when i was a young lad!!.

another thing i noticed growing up is exactly what your after bring up.when i stopped going to mass at a very young age,people started telling me my parents were decent people and didnt deserve what i was doing to them.little evil me.incidiousy trying to get me to conform with the norm.it took more courage to do what i done than not.and also i didnt sneer anything?just stated a fact did i not?..tradition is one thing but religion is something else.my grand uncles ate a big greasy fry every morning and smoked 40 woodbines a day.im sure you will agree this is/was tradition.it wasnt the right thing to do though im sure you will agree?

I'm in trouble I still love a fry and whilst I don't smoke Woodbines I do smoke Major and finish off a night with some Mick McQuaid.

I accept that the Catholic Church is in full flight in Ireland but don't feel its right to try and denigrate our parents who genuinely believed in it and whilst the Church did plenty of wrong it did some good.

It is a long way down the road but Islam will replace the Catholic Church here.

my ire is with all fundamental religion..........islam is without doubt the worst........the problem with fundamental religion is it puts concepts ahead of people..........i regard the catholics in this country who are against abortion in all circumstances as fundamentalists..........they would allow that indian women to die, even though the foetus had no chance of living.........this is putting the concept of "life" before reality.........its the same with their opposition to euthanasia.......someone who is in the latter stages of motor neuron disease probably has no quality of life, wants to die but these people say no........its daft stuff. if the fundamentalist were in this situation then go ahead live it out.........but they have no right to impose their view on everybody else.

id say theres not a hope.as people get more educated religion means less.id imagine in 100 yrs religion will be a very small thing in ireland.in islam states theres poverty and opression.people cling to something so religion is strong there.

in 100 years time only 1% of the irish population will be going to mass, the catholic faith will not be thought in schools and very few kids will be doing the communion/confirmation gig...........the only thing keeping the catholic faith alive in this country is the brainwashed generation.....most are over 65.
