No need for the personal attack workrider.

Gay marriage is an important issue and the sooner it is recognised in law the better. I am all in favour of a referundum on it.

You should focus on other areas if you are looking for places the government can cut spending. 40% of goverment expenditure is on welfare- do you think that is sustainable?
Report workrider November 13, 2012 10:09 PM GMT
...tgm..    how urgent is a referendum on gay marriage ffs ...way down the list of priorities in any reasonable persons mind...its the real world we have to look to first ....a total waste of public funds imo....the welfare issue is an example of why we need to get people back working ....its not a personal attack , why do you think it is ..are you gay ...do you think that because most irish people have more urgent priorities rather than this , on their minds , that you are under attack...?
Report thegalwayman November 13, 2012 10:29 PM GMT
I took the 'tells me all about you' line as personal. Which it was. But let us move on.

It is not urgent, but it is certainly an issue worth looking at. It is not like we are going to vote on this next week at massive cost to the taxpayer. The earliest will be late next year, and I should imagine it will be on the same day as something like a vote on the abolition of the Seanad, thereby minimising the cost. Regardless, given the sums of money involved in government expenditure, the cost of a referendum on something like this is certainly worth bearing.

Welfare is now 40% of expenditure, health is 27% and education is 17%. Think about that and consider how you would get better value on that outlay.
Report workrider November 13, 2012 10:38 PM GMT
i'm well aware we need more value for the amount of money we spend on these ....but for a top goverment offical to think this s a priority issue says it all about the labour party ....a shambles imo...i can see the heterosexuals getting organised soon and putting pressure on goverments to put families first ....
Report thegalwayman November 13, 2012 10:47 PM GMT
I am heterosexual and in favour of gay marriage. I did not realise until now I was the only one. Cheers workrider.

I agree that the Labour party are a shambles. It is a great pity that we did not grant FG an overall majority at the last election.

Gilmore was interviewed on Irish membership of the UN Human rights commission and said during the tenor, they would forward the causes of women, lgbts, etc.... He has harangued by RTE into admitting he would favor a referendum on gay marriage.

It was lip service....no more than that. he knows full well there is no f**king chance of a referendum on the issue anytime soon and kept saying it was being investigated by Ref commission.....ie 5+ years down the line

OP is disingenuous imho. Not once did Gilmore proclaim this was a "Top Issue"........and I think Gilmore is a complete b*llocks btw
Report workrider November 13, 2012 11:38 PM GMT
well joe he was on the news today ..saying he was for it , and would bring it up as a priority ....maybe you should listen to the news more often ..it was on the rte radio news at 11 am this morning ....sorry if i appear disingenuous ..sometimes the truth hurts ....he also said he was in favour  of same sex marriage...
Report revedesivola November 13, 2012 11:43 PM GMT
the cost of a referendum, especially one thats quite black and white and where people are generally strongly for or against and where the goverment probably dont really care about the outcome, is quite cheap in the scheme of things. i think the best way out of our problem is to get as much money as we can together and have the lot on trap 3 in the first race at monmore

workrider, were you not telling us once that one of your grandchildren had recently come out of the closet?  Apologies if I am confusing you with some other forumite.

I thought you of all people would be very much in favour of gay marriage given your circumstances.  I would be happy to support you on this important issue.

Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby November 14, 2012 12:50 AM GMT
I listened to the original interview in full at 8:30am this morning on RTE Radio and to try to say he sees a potential referendum as a "Priority" over other issues (Financial etc...) is not true. He simply said it would be a priority in the context of Irelands membership of the UN commission and any future referendum would be up to the referendum commission to decide on. He then gave his personal opinion that he would favour it (Gay Marriage not a referendum)
Report Diamond_Joe_Quimby November 14, 2012 12:52 AM GMT
Same-sex marriage would be one of the first issues examined by the constitutional convention, which needed to be “given the time to look at it”.

its not about gays or anything else for that matter , let them marry who they bloody well like ..its nothing to do with me ...but with the country in such a sad state of affairs , a member of cabinet giving time and energy to this , thats what galls me...let the clown get the country back working and bringing money back into the economy ..then he can do what ever he likes ...
