The whole operation contributes a huge amount for the benefit of Irish racing and their impact on racing on a global scale is massive.

Well said Soldier,we'd all be screwed without them
Report wildmanfromborneo May 20, 2012 8:09 PM BST
It is hard to quantify how much they bring to this country but their breeding operation is rightly regarded as the best in the world,Aiden O`Brien is also rightly regarded as one of the best trainers in the world.
I think they are going through a tough financial time but it doesn`t mean i am against them, far from it.

Could you elaborate and give us some figures? A sweeping statement like that doesnt really tell the full story.

Anyone know what Joseph might ride in the 2000 Guineas on Saturday. Power has no chance of staying imo.

Sunday he has the pick of Homecoming Queen and Maybe in the 1000 Guineas. I reckon he will stick with Maybe.

What is his likely runner in the Tatts race lads. So You Tink??

Will someone start a Curragh week-end thread as I reckon it will likely produce some lively chat once the entries are out for the two days and the ante post betting is in.

I think that Tattersalls Gold Cup is probably the biggest sham Group 1 race in Europe.

Power....
While respecting all views on here;
what price would Power be if this was to be first run of the season ?
Does this look a sub-standard 2000gns.
Were any real excuses put forward for Power's last run ?
Was trainer or jockey quizzed as to his poor run ?
Would RL Moore have minded him when his chance was gone ?
What won last years 2000gns ?
Who rode last years 2000gns winner ?
Did he make nearly all the running to win it ?
Could Power do the same even after a shocking run at Newmarket ?
If he runs and wins what excuses will the trainer use ?
Would the stewards ask any questions ?
Did Power have any setbacks before Newmarket ?Wink
Are yous still sure he wont stay ?
Report thefly10 May 22, 2012 10:23 PM BST
Neill d probably the biggest sham Group 1 race in Europe along with our Leger.
Report DMCK May 23, 2012 10:06 AM BST
with due respect, our leger is competitive, dead heat last year and not won by the fav year in year out, might not be the strongest group 1 but its competitive.
however the Tattersalls Gold Cup is a disgrace, how it gets the 115rating to continue as ag1 is beyond me,

Report silvergreaser May 23, 2012 11:59 AM BST
Has this been confirmed punchestown? as AOB has plenty of horses with multiple entries over the w/end.
Report punchestown May 23, 2012 12:33 PM BST
silvergreaser,I probably jumped the gun but I would think they'd be dropping him back in trip after that effort at Newmarket.
Report silvergreaser May 23, 2012 1:01 PM BST
AOB has 4 3yr olds entered in the Greenlands that are also entered for the 2000 guineas.
The one I find just as interesting as Power is Nephrite, another horse instantly dismissed as a sprinter by many on here after one poor showing, as you know it can often be folly to take a poor run (often deplorable run) from a Ballydoyle inmate at face value?.
Makes for an interesting w/ends racing and nobody will be overly surprised if a lesser fancied Coolmore runner or two usurps some of their more fancied runners, well on paper anyway?.
Report soapp May 23, 2012 6:18 PM BST
It's nice to see for a change he is not making a splash in the betting for the 2000 Guineas.

Mightymoyes could be right that Maybe goes for the Oaks.

5/4 about Homecoming Queen is a lay imo. That was a freak result and is unlikely to be repeated. What will beat him is an altogether different poser.
Report silvergreaser May 23, 2012 6:47 PM BST
I notice nearly all the early money has come for Bolgers Parish Hall, I wouldn't be worried on the fitness score with a Bolger runner whether he's good enough is another matter?.

The Coolmore money probably won't come until nearer the race where we'll have a better idea which of their horses are going for what race?.

The French horse Hermival at least doesn't have any question marks hanging over him, and it can be argued he might have finished a deal closer in the Guineas if he wasn't racing on what looked the unfavoured far rail, at a general 5/1 seems much the safest option, but no surprise to see a Coolmore outsider make the frame at rewarding odds?.
Report BoxFresh May 23, 2012 11:50 PM BST
Well then why dont you fúcking back all their outsiders silver, you seem to have coolmore by the bollox, you must make a fortune backing all their outsiders to win Group 1s,what a prizéd bitter cúnt u are, obsessed with anything Ballydoyle.

4 of O'Briens stand their ground for the 2000 on Saturday jockey arrangements as follows;

Daddy Long Legs - C O'Donoghue,
Power - JP O'Brien,
Reply - FM Berry,

Nephrite still holds that entry for the 6f Greenlands.

silver, aidan's opinion that nephrite is a sprinter is about to be tested ,we'll learn if they've found the key to him...
Report silvergreaser May 24, 2012 6:04 PM BST
Workrider, Nephrite actually quickened nicely last year to beat the Oxx talking horse Born to Sea over 7f on bad ground suggesting he'd have no trouble getting a mile on better ground?.
Its hard to get a full handle on what seemed a disappointing run first time out this year, as you know some of these Ballydoyle horses are often known to make a mockery of their seasonal debuts?.

Camelot apart Nephrite and Power looked two of the more exciting colts from Ballydoyle to keep a keen eye on for the coming season.
Interesting w/end of racing ahead, should be a lot more informative come Monday morning.

Report silvergreaser May 24, 2012 9:10 PM BST
Pretty certain I'd say Brave, the Oaks looks the one where she is a best price 3/1, seems a little skimpy to me?.
Report thebrave May 24, 2012 9:27 PM BST
To be honest silver,I am in the opposite camp to the poster above who thinks
HQ fluked the Guineas at Newmarket, and I think she'll destroy them again on Sunday Crazy or Cool
Would just like to see Maybe out of the equation Wink
3/1 for Oaks, mmm a wee bit skinny as you say, was really taken by Gosden filly that won Musidora, after
being beaten 11 lengths (was it?) by HQ Grin
Fascinating contender for Epsom at a big price, would be the Varian filly that won at Newmarket last week - potentially
miles ahead of that bare from, and I hope they have a sporting go with her Happy
Report silvergreaser May 24, 2012 9:50 PM BST
The ground has been drying out big time, while HQ looked mighty impressive sometimes on extremes of ground you can get exaggerated winning margins.
But with Maybe looking an almost certain non starter the race looks there for the taking for HQ, a possible spanner in the works might well come from a stable companion.

I presume you're on about Pink Damsel for Varian?, that he's willing to run her in the Oaks after just one start suggests they think a bit of her, 33/1 at the time of typing.
Have to agree with you about the Gosden horse dismissed one of Coolmores with comsumate ease, hard not to be taken by that performance, a best priced 7/2 general 3/1, I'd rather be on her than Maybe.
The Fugue also gave HQ's guineas form a boost.

I think the decision to jock off Ryan Moore and replace him with the Boy Wonder on Homecoming Queen is a crazy move. Furthermore, I am of the opinion that her win in the English Guineas, a la Hawk Wing, was a fluke. I can see Joseph making a hash of the fractions.

"We were very happy with Power last year. At Newmarket it was his first run of the year on very soft ground? and Ryan [Moore] rang during the week and just said 'he felt like a serious horse during the first half of the race but then he lost in the second half of the race' and we put that down to maybe needing the run? (now that must qualify as the biggest understatement of the year thus far?) and the soft ground?.

"Ryan was anxious that Joseph would ride? him [from the other Ballydoyle runners] and how right he was. I'm delighted it worked out so well. He has a lot of class and they can't go too fast in a race for him. I have to credit all the team at home including Keith Dalton who rides him out every day -- it's a big team effort. He's a big, powerful horse, hence his name, and I'd say he'll go for the St James's Palace now."

Its a cert that APOB will beat Sir Henrys Ascot record but i doubt he will ever have that bit of class that Cecil has.I suppose as the song goes you either have it or you dont.My favorite trainer of all.
Report silvergreaser June 21, 2012 11:06 PM BST
So Henry is not a hands on trainer and Frankel doesn't seem to go any slower in fact he seems to be getting faster, Aiden the meticulous hands on I think I'm God trainer didn't seem to make Fame and Glory go any faster by been so meticulous? in fact the horse went an awful lot slower.

Moral of the story once again, good horses make good trainers!.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 21, 2012 11:28 PM BST
It was the ground that beat Fame And Glory.
Report silvergreaser June 21, 2012 11:40 PM BST
Maybe it was a factor wildman, but so far was he beaten it would stretch the imagination to think he'd have won even with better ground, but of course I'm just making the point I always make, O'Brien can saddle his 8 runners in a race all by himself and he still won't make them go any faster!.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 21, 2012 11:57 PM BST
But he does make them go faster because of his attention to detail,he trains them to peak at specific times. One thing i have learned is you can never rule out any of his horses, they can run so bad that you mark them down as useless and then they pop up running way over their form.Homecoming Queen and Ishvana are the most recent ones.
Report silvergreaser June 22, 2012 12:03 AM BST
I'm sure he trained Fame and Glory to peak today wildman? and if he thought the ground was going to be a problem he'd have pulled him out, in fact they couldn't get enough money on the horse?.
All trainers train horses to peak for certain races, its hardly a novel idea?, its been around since horse racing began.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 22, 2012 12:08 AM BST
He has taken it to a new level, isin`t that one of your main complaints.
Report neill d June 22, 2012 12:08 AM BST
I think there are few trainers that the camera is as kind to as Cecil, it's an unfair comparison really as his presence, looks and regal countenance set him apartLaugh
Report silvergreaser June 22, 2012 12:12 AM BST
a new level? explain yourself wildman?

Neill d, Henry doesn't feel the need to saddle his horses, his experienced staff can do such a simple job, its called trust, but "god" insists he wants to saddle everyone of his, suggests the guy is mentally unstable, thinks he's god or doesn't trust his very experienced staff, take your pick?.
Report neill d June 22, 2012 12:17 AM BST
Might just be something to occupy him in the run up to the race, puts him at ease and make him forget a little the pressure he is under. Maybe he is just wary of slipped saddlesLaugh You're right though, it's for Aidan's benefit.

On a seperate note, John Mullane would want to get over himself here.
Report wildmanfromborneo June 22, 2012 12:18 AM BST
They are as near to not trying as you can get in their prep races leaving them to peak for their main target.
There was a filly called Dibidale i think trained by Barry Hills and ridden by Willie Carson whose saddle slipped in the Oaks a certainty beat, thats not going to happen to him.
Who is John Mullane?
Report neill d June 22, 2012 12:27 AM BST
Waterford corner forward complaining there on RTE 2 there a minute ago about something Davy fitz, the Clare manager and ex Clare goalie might or might not have said about him before the Clare and waterford game last week. Apparently it was that Mullane was 'finished'. Which he plainly isn't but he was on there moaning about it. They only scraped past a very young Clare team there, i'd have thought he'd have other things to be talking about, must be very thin skinned.
Report silvergreaser June 22, 2012 12:27 AM BST
Which is a shame wildman, well above average 2yo's campaigned as if they'd be lucky to win a seller at Southwell only to be backed off the boards, up their proverbial ass when they tried it with Parliament Square at Ascot not beaten far just out of the frame but its called karma, and Fame and Glory getting beat today was even more Karma.

The one that was backed off the boards tonight beaten 13+L on its debut should be investigated, its not normal improvement its effing astonishing improvement and people still think this rancid operation is the best thing to happen to Irish racing, I despair sometimes!.
