Absent friends remembered in stories and treasured memories
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 The early-morning grey mist over Powerstown Racecourse didn’t in any way dampen the spirits yesterday morning, opening day in Clonmel of the 87th annual National Coursing Meeting. Old friends from all over the country – and beyond – meeting and warmly greeting at one of Ireland’s great sporting occasions. As ever, however, there were also absent friends, those who for various reasons, didn’t make it. Some have passed on, with us now in spirit only; some have reached a stage where attendance at this stamina-sapping all-day three-day outdoor event is no longer an option; some were merely out for this year only. Even as those in the sizeable attendance settled down to the day’s sport, however, all were fondly remembered. So it was that Brendan Matthews and his clan, his kids and their kids, had a thought for their much-loved family matriarch, Anna, taken so suddenly from them during the last year. So it was that those of us who cover this event spoke fondly of veteran journalist Gerry McCarthy, he of the encyclopaedic knowledge of coursing and Clonmel but unable to tog off for this one due to illness. And so it was that we speak this morning of Tess Power. Tessie featured in these pages before – in fact, along with husband Tom and son Lester, she’s one of the regulars. Their hospitality at the national meeting is legendary, a hot-whiskey stop to battle the cold first thing every morning for many, get the blood flowing. Tom is the quiet-spoken half of this relationship; Tess? Well let’s put it this way – Tessie Power has strong opinions, is ready to express them, and isn’t at all reluctant to use a bit of colourful emphasis. Never was, in fact, according to Tom. "When she was still only a schoolgirl, the teacher lived across the road from them and said to her one day – ‘Tessie, you may take home my books for me today’ – ‘You may f***in’ bring them home for yourself!’ Even at that age she didn’t care about anyone." She was a legendary figure, not just in Clonmel but at every local coursing meeting over the years up and down the country. Everyone has their own favourite Tessie Power story to tell, but everyone too began with the same rider – "But you couldn’t print it!" Tom tells a tale of a fella in the neighbourhood; word got out that he was beating his wife, so Tess got together with another formidable lady and – well, without getting into details, let’s just say that guy suffered his own comeuppance at the hands of those women, learned a hard lesson but learned it well! "God they’d be in jail today for what they did", says Tom, "But it worked!" Charlie Murphy, a friend for over half a century, told a story of an occasion at a Trial Stake in Wexford. "Willie Duggan, the great rugby-player, had a bitch in training with Tom and Tess and after a few very tough runs she was in the final. Tom was rubbing the bitch, Tess was holding her – ‘Dammit, will you rub her, Tom’ she says, ‘You rub me twice as hard as that!’ Jim Quinlan, another old friend, remembers an incident in Tramore. "Tessie had a little shop, sold a lot of vegetables. They were in a loose display, no plastic bags then, not washed either. There was a very kind of hoity-toity lady, a Mrs Fennelly from Callan in Co Kilkenny – she was actually a distant relative of my own — out staying in one of the holiday chalets and happened into Tessie’s; there she was, browsing, and eventually she came over to Tessie – ‘I wonder madam,’ she says, ‘Would you be able to get the vegetables for me, I don’t want to get my hands dirty.’ ‘If you f***in’ want them you can get them yourself!’ - that’s exactly what she said. She was a straight-shooter, took no prisoners, and yet, says Anne Quinlan - Jim’s wife and another old friend – was soft-centred. "It was her heart, her kindness. All my kids, when they were young, she’d always have a half-crown or a two-shilling piece for them, they never went away from Tessie empty-handed." Tessie wasn’t there yesterday, at 81 is feeling a little frail, though still – according to Lester – as feisty as ever. "The other morning in the nursing home the nurse said to me mother – ‘What would you like for your breakfast?’ Me mother thought for a second – ‘I’d love a smoked rasher!’ The nurse said – ‘Tessie, where would I get a smoked rasher?’ She wasn’t expecting the reply – ‘In a f***in’ shop, where else!’ She’s a once off, her presence sorely missed, but as with Anna and as with Gerry, as with so many others like the late Patrick O’Sullivan of Tournafulla who passed away only over the Christmas, in the stories and in the memories she is forever treasured. Festival lives up to opening day tradition
Tuesday, January 31, 2012 CLONMEL once again lived up to its first day tradition of shocks when the National Coursing Meeting got underway yesterday. In the ****.com Derby the biggest upset was 14-1 shot Windgap Lar’s defeat by Wood Hyland, one of the reserves, who came from behind to pip him in a no-turn course. A second major shock was Swanky Matt (12-1) having to give best to Killeagh Matt by a two and a half lengths margin. Other fancied contenders to bite the dust included the fancied Cuddly Man, who went under to Cuine Boy by two lengths, and Hunters Glory (unsighted) who went out to Bahamian Kid. There was a big gamble on Offshore Eoin, backed from 8-1 early on down to 5-1 favourite. As a result Belated Birthday, who opened 7-1 favourite, drifted to 11-1 as Blueview Sam (9-1) also came in for support. Belated Birthday and Ashmore Sambo look likely to advance to the last eight from the opening quarter while Prime Example looks the pick of those at the top of the second quarter. Blueview Dan won nicely yesterday and could join him in the last eight. Go Home Hare would have been a strong contender here but a 41 second hunt yesterday could hinder his chances of progressing. In the third quarter Offshore Eoin was impressive yesterday and it will be a big surprise if he doesn’t make it from the top of this sector. Who will join him is up for grabs as Skellig Wish, another who was heavily supported in the betting ring all morning, is now the worst handicapped dog in the field on 46 seconds and his prospects of advancing now look remote. At the bottom of this sector Solid Monk looks the part. Blue Sam should advance to the final day from the top of the fourth quarter where he can be joined by Here Comes Harry who was involved in a controversial course yesterday against Ashmore Master. Ashmore Master was announced as the winner of the buckle, but it transpired that the pair ran in the wrong collars so the judge changed his verdict. Offshore Eoin gets the nod to take the honours. The big upsets in the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks were Gaisce Mor (10-1) going under to Blazing Dilemma, Spring Hawk (14-1) failing to master Silent Carol, Oh Banba upsetting the odds on Troanas Joy (14-1) and Dale Roisin getting the better of Holy Lady (10-1). The only major gamble was on Emmas Goldrush who was 16-1 early on but was down to 8-1 before the classic started. In the top quarter this morning Fiery Sunset should come out of the top of this sector while Emmas Goldrush can join her from the bottom of the quarter. In the second quarter Fives Treasure was the most impressive winner yesterday and will take some beating while Yorkville Stella can also make it to the last day. Oilean Smile could be the solution to an open top of the third quarter while Rios Girl can survive at the bottom. The top of the final quarter looks a battle between Come On Vivienne and Capetown Lucy who look likely to meet in the third round while it is hard to oppose Ravel Glory at the bottom. Fives Treasure, so impressive yesterday, is clearly the percentage bet here. This story appeared in the printed version of the Irish Examiner Tuesday, January 31, 2012 Read more: http://www.examiner.ie/sport/other/festival-lives-up-to-opening-day-tradition-182098.html#ixzz1l1Owjb70 |

Progressive Sam poised to land Derby
By Tom Higgins Wednesday, February 01, 2012 THE surprises of the previous day continued at the second stage of the National Coursing meeting yesterday, with the biggest upsets coming in the Boylesport.com Derby. Very few gave Skellig Wish any chance of advancing further, as he was heavily run in the opening round, but he showed tremendous courage when putting out the long odds favourite Offshore Eoin on a just up decision when coming from behind. He then advanced the last eight when beating Tom Bawn by a length, but it will be a miracle if he can go any further as he was also hard run in this buckle. The hope of the north, Ashmore Sambo, also bit the dust being led all the way by Brindle Man who had a length and a half in hand for the opening turn. Another major upset was Here Comes Harry being eliminated, running unsighted in his buckle with Aftertiming. However, it’s still very much a case of all to play for in the classic. India Rio clocked a very fast time in his third round yesterday and could advance to the semi-final at the expense of Belated Birthday. Patsy Byrne’s Prime Example faces Go Home Hare in the second quarter final and, the way the latter is running, he looks the one to advance. It will be a sensation if Skellig Wish somehow manages to see off Solid Monk as he is miles behind in the handicap while Blueview Sam, the new long odds favourite, should get the better of Aftertiming in the last of the quarter finals. The progressive Blueview Sam gets the nod to win out. In the Greyhound & Pet World Oaks there was only one big upset in the second round with Rosie Hedge getting the better of Come On Vivienne by two lengths. There was a bigger shock in the third round when the northern owned second favourite, Ravel Glory, went out by a length to Dale Roisin. Other minor upsets in this round included Yorkville Stella being ousted by Awe And Wonder and Oh Banba defeating Oilean Smile. In the quarter finals this morning Feede Blond will be expected to overcome Emmas Goldrush while it is hard to oppose the long odds favourite, Fives Treasure, who has been superb all week. She should make the semi-finals at the expense of Awe And Wonder. Coffee In Currow impressed the clockers yesterday and may have the measure of Oh Banba, who had a hard third round course. There is little between Rosie Hedge and Dale Roisin, with the latter possibly the percentage bet to advance. Fives Treasure has been very impressive all week and can claim the crown. The two all-aged stakes, the Classic Club Champion Stakes and the Grace Bruton Memorial Stakes are down for decision today. Kyle King can give Marie Field some compensation for the defeat of Kyle Ranger in the Derby last year by taking the Champion Stakes while Southside Tess looks the part in the Grace Bruton Memorial. Car-boot commune spare no expense
By Diarmuid O’ Flynn Wednesday, February 01, 2012 We’ve spoken before in these pages about the earthiness of those who go to Clonmel every year for the annual National Coursing Meeting, of how grounded they are in nature, how self-sufficient. During the regular season they’ll go from Trial Stake to Trial Stake, to places where the facilities are first, last and foremost for the hares and the hounds, and where the humans are expected to look after themselves. These events last for several hours, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon, and for all of those hours you’re on your feet, exposed to the elements. The break then, when it comes, is a special time; some will go to the mobile chipper, most head for the car-boot, for the flask and the sandwiches. Clonmel though is different. Here you have the stands, cover from the elements for those who arrive early enough; here also you have the likes of Masterchefs Hospitality serving up a selection of more upmarket mobile grub. Yet still people head for the car-boots. Every day, however, the largest crowd of all heads for a couple of cars parked at the back end of the dog-owners’ car-park. Why? Well that’s where Brendan Murphy and his father Christy are parked, alongside the Quinlan family, and by now in Clonmel the word has spread. The food is special, yes, a buffet lunch you’d pay dearly for anywhere else, but it’s the company, the camaraderie, the communion. "I was raised on this," Brendan explains, "When I was a young fella we used to come here every year and it was the very same then as it is now. The sandwiches, the salads, the tea and coffee, they all came out of the boots of the cars, everyone pooled in and shared with one another. The Quinlans, the Spratts, the Mackeys – John and Mrs. Mackey were still there then – that’s where all this started." Oh it’s an impressive spread, a truly impressive spread, but Brendan dismisses any credit for the quality of the fare on offer, the platters of seafood, cold meats, salads etc, or the cost of same. "Sure cost doesn’t come into it – if you were looking only at the cost of things nowadays you wouldn’t even get up in the morning! It’s very easy for me now, we own the Horse & Hound hotel in Ballinaboola (near New Ross) and the staff would have all the food ready for us in the morning, all we have to do is load it into the car and on we come, so I can’t claim that much credit for it." As for the hot whiskeys and hot ports – "That comes out of someone else’s car! Everyone does their piece – it’s a routine at this stage." It’s a hive, is what it is, and within minutes of the break Jim Quinlan’s improvised table has been set and the influx starts. "This is why I love Clonmel," says Christy. "Meeting all the old friends – that’s what it’s all about, this little community. We started doing this over 30 years ago and it’s gone on and on – a lot of old friends, like Jim Spratt and Andy Hughes, Michael Heeney and his daughter Eimear — they’re from Louth and they’re here with us every year; you have the Buckleys from Cork, old friends, but we’re also meeting new people all the time. People will ask me – how did you get to know so-and-so? Clonmel, that’s how." What puzzles both Brendan and his father, however, is the lack of coverage that the National Coursing Meeting gets, on television especially. "I think they’re a little bit asleep," says Brendan; "Minority sports are almost ignored by the likes of RTE and TV3, and I don’t know why." Given that his daughter Gráinne, a swimmer, has qualified for the Olympics later this year, yet could still walk down any street in Ireland and probably remain unrecognised, Brendan knows whereof he speaks. "Do we really want to see soccer every day of the week?" he asks, but the question is rhetorical. "I heard a lot of people today here discussing a documentary they saw last night about the contribution of the Irish to Australia – that’s the kind of thing we need, a bit of variety. We DON’T need to see the same thing every day. For months before Clonmel the various Trial Stakes are big events in their own areas, yet there’s no coverage. The Corn na Féile in Abbeyfeale every year, a huge event, ignored; the Irish Cup in a few weeks’ time, a massive prize-fund, same thing. Very little coverage nationally, apart from the Irish Examiner." No matter, and in a way coursing is better off away from the glare, away from those who would never understand. The car-boot commune, what better medium do you need? Read more: http://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/other/car-boot-commune-spare-no-expense-182224.html#ixzz1l7XdBSbf |
