Was discussing with a fella at work today about people that have excelled in both fields. With the weekend thats in it I thought it would be worth clipping up a thread about this. One notable figure is Willie Mc Creery, ex Kildare footballer, selector and now a licenced horse trainer. They could have played at any level. He mentioned a few jockeys that played inter county hurling at some stage, Derek O' Connor and Paddy Brennan both from Galway. Hayden trainer also played football. Anyone any more?

Depends how you define "excelled"

That's true db1974 most of them played but at what level. I remember my grandfather telling me John Oxx Senior was a decent hurler.

J Oxx senior won a Meath SHC title with Dunboyne (in the '30's I think). I know it's only Meath hurling, but he was fairly useful by all accounts.

Plenty of ex-Meath All-Ireland winners involved as owners, breeders, punters:-
Colm O'Rourke owned a leg of Teofilos dam with Bolger
Mick Lyons & brothers into breeding
Barry Callaghan owner, punter

Don't know of any jocks or trainers though.
