Well done Sligo!
I massive reception awaits them in The Swan Hotel. Oh hang on a minute... |

Never ever and I can say never, has a team at any level failed to score in a penalty shoot out.Shamrock Rovers have created their own bit of history this evening.
|
|
By:
Its happened quite a few times that a team has scored zero penalties in a shoot out.

Went to game as a neutral, while quality not always great at times, in terms of effort and spirit it was an enjoyable occasions. The Sligo boys always wanted to play football and the likes of Joey Ndo played very well and for €10 I am happy I got my values worth.
36,000 attendance Rocketfingers won't know what to do with himself :) |

Barcelons failed to score during the shoot out in the 86 European Cup final, so Rovers are following in illustrious footsteps.
|

Robo certainly knows his history.
This was a mickey mouse non event alright, so how would you know. Duckadam, who was instrumental in helping the capital side to two consecutive league titles, was also between the posts for the 1986 European Cup final against FC Barcelona, which was played in Seville, on May 7, 1986. Amazingly, he saved four consecutive penalty shots in the shootout, from José Ramón Alexanko, Ángel Pedraza, Pichi Alonso and Marcos, being the first one to do so in an official European competition. Steaua won it 2–0, and the main European trophy for the first time, and much of the credit for the surprise victory was given to Duckadam. |

Sligo here ... cup finals are often disasters - but I am proud of Sligo - think they played some great football - always to the foot - patient / penetrating - had several chances ...
Hoops had their chances too - cannot understand anybody calling this game boring - a fantastic atmosphere in a great setting at a fair price ... met a few Hoops supporters in the pub after - sound lads. For me, this goes down as a great Irish sporting occasion - and I made this comment to my mate during the second half - before any result ... The Sligo keeper, saving 4 penalties in a row, will never have to buy a drink in Sligo again ... and as far as I can recall he saved them on the right, the left and the centre ... I have certainly seen worse penalties. The stewarding was fantastic - with huge numbers at every point of the stadium - spotless toilets - easy access in and out - a fantastic day out and well done to all concerned. |

That peno shoot out was was comic gold. You expect 1 or 2 lads to let the nerves get the better of them in a cup final but to miss all your penos is taken the piss!

for everyone imo. |

To be fair, Irish soccer has to compete globally, the GAA is inward looking and rugby is only played seriously by about 10 nations(that is being generous) so it is easier for these sports to look good in shallower depths. It isn't any surprise that the standard isn't great, but at least they are keeping it going. Yesterday was a great showpiece in a lot of ways. Well done

Great post. ^^^
Well said. |

By:
gosh i agree with giant
.neill d , you put that very well , you can only play the hand you're given . lots of irish people of country origin look on football as a british game hence their derogatory remarks . still i suppose 37.000 people had a wonderful day out yesterday , and in this economic climate ain't that a nice little way of spreading joy .... |
|
By:
37000 people did not have a wonderful day out yesterday, they failed to see a goal in real play and one crowd of jackeen jokers couldnt even score in a penalty shootout. What joy did these wasters spread?.The only thing they did was subject the people who paid particularly the neutrals which made up of over 80% of the crowd,to a couple of hours of pure undiluted tripe. The only saving grace was the comedy show at the end.The FAI are considering removing the goalkeepers in all penalty shootouts from now on just to give the joy spreaders a better chance.

Wasnt a great game, but we all have seen better and we have seen a lot worse. To say it has slipped to a new low should be applied to posts like yours. Hoops stopped Sligo playing for a lot of the time by foul play (IMO). What did you expect Barcelona/Real Madrid? Your pocket is talking I believe.
|
|
By:
pocket talking ,unlikely mate.Wouldnt even watch that rubbish not to mind bet on it.
|
|
By:
Why knock it if you didnt even watch it? Have you nothing else to complain about on a Monday?

poor robo , considers himself an expert on loi football , he's on here most weeks giving us a blow by blow account . then shock horror , to quote him .wouldnt even watch that rubbish not to mind bet on it

I was at the game yesterday which maybe puts me in a better position to comment on the game then the person who began this thread and who now says he didnt even watch the game. I was a neutral but a committed supporter of both schoolboy soccer and the domestic game . I would make the following points 1. It was a great occasion for the domestic game . Its a long time since 37,000 watched a LOI match. A badly needed short in the arm.2. The atmosphere was terrific and I very much doubt anyone leaving the stadium at the end felt shortchanged. 3. The game itself was highly enjoyable with some very good football played . I felt Sligo played the better football 4. The penalty shootout was a bit of a let down but both sets of fans can take part blame - the heckling of the penalty takers was dreadful and was initiated by the Rovers supporters heckling the first Sligo kicker and copied by the Sligo supporters. 5. The day was a great success for the FAI. They got the prices right, the crowd game and the stewarding was top class.

The guy on RTE sports news was embarrassed giving the story of this footballing debacle last night,he could hardly keep in the laughing when it came to the penalty shootout. He was propably thinking to himself as most people would, that this rubbish isn't sport and has no business on the news. What next he was saying to himself, tug of war results, poc fada details,or maybe haggas throwing.

People who knock sports events or anything else that they do not attend or even watch are hardly worth replying to ... the bonfires are blazing in Sligo tonight ...
here is a team of superstars that had 4 penalties in a row saved - in a European cup final as mentioned earlier on the thread ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osGXE2Aje5Q |
|
By:
Robo, give over. Enough is enuff. I support the LOI and am proud to be a Galway Utd fan. I go to 4 or 5 home games and always go to 1 away game-----Bohs(great players/fans imo) because we love to mess them up
If you like LOI say something constructive if not remain quiet, we dont need anymore knockers or tits like you. |
|
By:
Seemed to be a great occasion fair play to the FAI for finally getting something right re the tickets and pricing.. Was it just me or did it seem that all the players struggled with the conditions underfoot yesterday, I wonder did the previous days rugby make for a tricky surface...
|
|
By:
t.prversion , you are correct in your assessment of the pitch , lots of players on both side slipping all over the place .the grass was longer than normal for a soccer pitch , it really found the players out , it seemed to sap the energy from them , having said all that it was a great occasion and very well marketed .
|
|
By:
I think you may find that these players struggle on every pitch, not just this one.As for the pricing, what did ye think they were going to charge to see this rubbish.
?.It may well have been cheap to get in but I'd think most people would have said it was dear by the end . |
|

you just cat help yourself can you robo . god love you son , i hope it gets better for you i really do .

The keeper in the 1986 European Final was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder shortly after the match and never really played again. Luckily for Ireland as he would arguably have been the Romanian goalkeeper at the 1990 World Cup.

By:
I dont generally see much LOI, but really enjoyed the match and the occasion, congrats to Sligo on a well deserved win.

The truth is that was Robbo is raging, I was there it was a great occasion, and he hates that, it really kills him. Much much much better atmosphere than any old First Division game I have attended, I was there with a Chelsae season ticket holder and hw was blown away by the day.
Robbo you are a know nothing, nothing, except hate, go away and fester in your own loathing. |
|
By:
I have a slight suspicion that rock piper has lent his account to wonky. The level of literacy is a dead giveaway. The usual stuff about hating, seething, loathing that wonky goes on about, the great occasion rubbish and as usual the mate that has never been before being blown away.Wonky give it a break buddy and change the record.I don't hate this LOI rubbish, this low grade jackeen dominated league,I don't even watch this trash ,but then again I don't have to taste Shiite to know it wouldn't taste nice.
