The showpiece final turned into a shameful no score bore ,and amazingly the league champions failed to score in a penalty shoot out.Rovers and to a slightly lesser extent Sligo have made Irish football a laughing stock yet again.

Went to game as a neutral, while quality not always great at times, in terms of effort and spirit it was an enjoyable occasions. The Sligo boys always wanted to play football and the likes of Joey Ndo played very well and for €10 I am happy I got my values worth.

Robo certainly knows his history.

This was a mickey mouse non event alright, so how would you know.

Duckadam, who was instrumental in helping the capital side to two consecutive league titles, was also between the posts for the 1986 European Cup final against FC Barcelona, which was played in Seville, on May 7, 1986. Amazingly, he saved four consecutive penalty shots in the shootout, from José Ramón Alexanko, Ángel Pedraza, Pichi Alonso and Marcos, being the first one to do so in an official European competition. Steaua won it 2–0, and the main European trophy for the first time, and much of the credit for the surprise victory was given to Duckadam.

Sligo here  ...  cup finals are often disasters  - but I am proud of Sligo - think they played some great football - always to the foot - patient / penetrating - had several chances ...

Hoops had their chances too  -  cannot understand anybody calling this game boring - a fantastic atmosphere in a great setting at a fair price  ... met a few Hoops supporters in the pub after - sound lads.

For me, this goes down as a great Irish sporting occasion  -  and I made this comment to my mate during the second half - before any result ...

The Sligo keeper, saving 4 penalties in a row, will never have to buy a drink in Sligo again  ...  and as far as I can recall he saved them on the right, the left and the centre ... I have certainly seen worse penalties.

The stewarding was fantastic - with huge numbers at every point of the stadium  -  spotless toilets  -  easy access in and out  -  a fantastic day out and well done to all concerned.

To be fair, Irish soccer has to compete globally, the GAA is inward looking and rugby is only played seriously by about 10 nations(that is being generous) so it is easier for these sports to look good in shallower depths. It isn't any surprise that the standard isn't great, but at least they are keeping it going. Yesterday was a great showpiece in a lot of ways. Well done

gosh i agree with giant Shocked.neill d , you put that  very well , you can only play the hand you're given . lots of irish people of country origin look on football as a british game hence their derogatory remarks . still i suppose 37.000 people had a wonderful day out yesterday , and in this economic climate ain't that a nice little way of spreading joy ....
Report robo November 15, 2010 4:41 PM GMT
37000 people did not have a wonderful day out yesterday, they failed to see a goal in real play and one crowd of jackeen jokers couldnt even score in a penalty shootout. What joy did these wasters spread?.The only thing they did was subject the people who paid particularly the neutrals which made up of over 80% of the crowd,to a couple of hours of pure undiluted tripe. The only saving grace was the comedy show at the end.The FAI are considering removing the goalkeepers in all penalty shootouts from now on just to give the joy spreaders a better chance.

Wasnt a great game, but we all have seen better and we have seen a lot worse.  To say it has slipped to a new low should be applied to posts like yours.  Hoops stopped Sligo playing for a lot of the time by foul play (IMO).  What did you expect Barcelona/Real Madrid?  Your pocket is talking I believe.

I was at the game yesterday which maybe puts me in a better position to comment on the game then the person who began this thread and who now says he didnt even watch the game. I was a neutral but a committed supporter of both schoolboy soccer and the domestic game . I would make the following points 1. It was a great occasion for the domestic game . Its a long time since 37,000 watched a LOI match. A badly needed short in the arm.2. The atmosphere was terrific and I very much doubt anyone leaving the stadium at the end felt shortchanged. 3. The game itself was highly enjoyable with some very good football played . I felt Sligo played the better football 4. The penalty shootout was a bit of a let down but both sets of fans can take part blame - the heckling of the penalty takers was dreadful and was initiated by the Rovers supporters heckling the first Sligo kicker and copied by the Sligo supporters. 5. The day was a great success for the FAI. They got the prices right, the crowd game and the stewarding was top class.

t.prversion , you are correct in your assessment of the pitch , lots of players on both side slipping all over the place .the grass was longer than normal for a soccer pitch , it really found the players out , it seemed to sap the energy from them , having said all that it was a great occasion and very well marketed .

The keeper in the 1986 European Final was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder shortly after the match and never really played again. Luckily for Ireland as he would arguably have been the Romanian goalkeeper at the 1990 World Cup.

This Robo bloke has been given far too much time on this thread.

It was a fantastic event - biggest crowd at a Domestic Cup final since 1968. Loads of families and kids there which augurs well for the future.

Couldn't really comment on the merits of the game as too caught up in the occasion. It's a big step for these players coming from crowds of 2k-6k to 36k on the day. The game certainly didn't lack drama either with the penos having everyone on the edge of their seat.

It was nice for a small good news story for once in this time of gloom and doom and horrific events such as those in Newcastlewest and Cork yesterday.

well done fai and surely the overall message for all associations in the country is charge the right price and people will go , people are looking for entertainment in this country at the right price.

If the ticket price on sunday was 30 quid maybe 6k would have turned up , 10 quid and its 36k , everyones a winner , players , fans , employment etc etc
Report Sligo November 17, 2010 2:31 PM GMT
Irishlad2 - don't think you get an atmosphere like that at two many county finals certainly not in our neck of the woods.

Lucky to get two thousand at Sligo and Leitrim County Finals.

I think there was only around 6k at Tipp Hurling final.

Anyway lets not go down that route again. There's place for both sports.

In fact in smaller counties like Sligo it's a lot of the same people who attend both codes and even coach both particularly at underage level. Genuine Sportspeople.
Report Rocketfingers November 17, 2010 2:57 PM GMT
Tobywong, Irishlad and gant you can't help yourself having digs, one of the reasons there was such a massive turnout was that both clubs are very well supported. Having Tickets prices at league price levels probably added 1 to 2k to the actual crowd.

As a person who coaches at both GAA football used to do it with Football as well (Oh not forgetting hurling) i am one of these sports mad people Sligo speaks about. I am a genuine sports person. I would also like to mention how both sets of fans were a credit to their clubs the singing was crazy it will be years before any sporting events has the same atmosphere as what was in the Aviva (And yes i am including the Irish soccer team in that).

It added 10 or 20k to the crowd, I don't think anyone apart from you would disagree. I was there a neutral and enjoyed the occasion, but the kids and famalies would not have been going if it was €30 quid a pop.
