Crazy as it may sound, some people actually fancy the 2nd fav tgm.
Go Native may make them (and me) look a fool but we're not sold yet.
Report Viva Pataca March 6, 2010 12:03 AM GMT
Fair enough, you don't agree. But if Starluck could comeback at Go Native like he did at Kempton, then surely Solwhit and the likes will be coming back at him up the hill! And as I say, if Solwhit's got something to chase, he'll keep finding until he goes by them, Davy Russell's words after the Festival Hurdle at Christmas.
Report Tavaris Jackson March 6, 2010 12:10 AM GMT
I agree Viva.
Solwhit was done for toe in the Fighting Fifth but had the race been another 2 furlongs I think he'd have got there.

Go Native had burst that gets him clear. Did it in his last 3 races (can't count Down Royal) but I just think that one better than Medermit can outstay him up the hill. Of course we may not have seen the best of Go Native yet but I'm pretty confident that he doesn't have a whole lot more.
Report Long Shadow March 6, 2010 12:16 AM GMT
The stats are against Go Native as very few horses go onto win the Champion Hurdle the year following their win in Supreme Hurdle and Punjabi failed to collect the £1m bonus when he fell last year. So something will come and rescue the sponsors of the bonus and the bookies.

I don't think Solwith will win either as he has had a hard campaign and has not been tested in Cheltenham.

I think Punjabi will go close and I'll wait for BG to pick his ride before backing him.
Report Elbows McGuinness March 6, 2010 2:41 AM GMT
Does nobody else feel that a win for Solwhit would be a sickener for the integrity of racing? EMI, maybe a messenger for this stable deserves to be shot. Any thoughts?
Report Dan Chipowski March 6, 2010 3:15 AM GMT
:) Good luck to anyone who has backed the horse, but I hope he loses, purely and simply due to the trainer.
Report BraveInca2006. March 6, 2010 9:34 AM GMT
Long shadow - are you Hen Knight? Solwhit has had 3 runs so far this season so hardly a touch campaign. He had 5 runs before Christmas last season - some of them mightnt have taken a lot out of him - and he was still able to win the Red Mills, Aintree Hurdle and Punchestown in the second half of the season. This obsession with molly-coddling horses for Cheltenham really could become detrimental to the rest of the season.

He's fast and contrary to popular belief, he does have a turn of foot. Look at the acceleration after the last in the Morgiana

I'm sorry but I will have to pull you up on that one. Solwhit does not have a turn of foot. He is a relentless galloper and in the Morgiana he galloped away form Muirhead (who was up and down in the one spot and hasn't done a stroke all year) and Hurricane Fly (debatable about how good he really is). He has a serious constitution and a good travelling speed (aided by accurate jumping) but he has no Grade 1 kick like Go Native has. He obviously isn't slow but there are several horses with more gears than him.

SUBLIMITY, winner of the 2007 Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, has been ruled out of this year's race with a leg injury.

Sublimity disappointed in last season's renewal, but had been "working better than ever" after a wind operation by vet Ben Brain this time around, finishing second to Go Native in the WBX.com Fighting Fifth Hurdle and two placings behind Solwhit at Leoparstown.

Those displays left the 10-year-old as short as 12-1 with Boylesports to become the first since Comedy Of Errors in 1975 to regain the Champion Hurdle crown and trainer Robbie Hennessy had been delighted with his final serious gallop at Leopardstown last Sunday.

However, after a routine canter earlier this week Sublimity took "the first lame step of his life" and a vet examination confirmed Hennessy's fears.

Bad scope leaves Solwhit Champion bid in doubt

BY RACINGPOST.COM STAFF 12:24PM 8 MAR 2010

SOLWHIT's participation in the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle, for which he is second favourite, is in serious doubt after he scoped dirty on Monday morning.

Speaking shortly after midday, trainer Charles Byrnes told the Racing Post: "The news is bad. Solwhit scoped dirty less than half an hour ago and while he is not definitely outof the Champion Hurdle there has to be a serious doubt about him running.

"He has to go on antibiotics until Thursday and things are very much up in the air. It's the last thing we wanted to happen, but I've spoken with his owners and they want everyone to know the situation."

The six-year-old was as short as 4-1 for the Champion Hurdle.

Horses are scoped routinely after exercise in racing yards. A 'dirty' scope is usually indicative of sub-clinical infection, ie inflammatory cells in higher numbers than normal present in the mucal secretions. Routine use of scoping allows these sub-clinical infections to be picked up quickly and treated before they become a serious problem.

Antibiotics will clear up a bacterial infection but remember a lot of infections in horses are viral and might take longer to settle.
The problem today is the timing so close to such a big race. Solwhit could easily turn up next week; but can he race at the best of his ability if him body is currently fighting infection?

I seriously doubt he can; but 20-1 is too big for me. I already have liabilities on the horse but will add afew pennies at 20's.

Imo Aintree is now much more likley. (and yes I am a vet; although I no longer treat horses)

Seems to know wat he's on about ;)

Dunguib team to stick to Supreme Novices' plan
By Jessica Lamb 2:02PM 8 MAR 2010

PHILIP FENTON said on Monday that the Punchestown Festival would be the first possible moment to see Dunguibtake on the big guns, despite the potential loss of leading chance Solwhit from the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle line-up.

A poor display of jumping in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Leopardstown last month convinced connections to stick to the Spinal Research Supreme Novices' Hurdle, for which Dan Harnett and Lily Lawlor's star is the odds-on favourite, and Fenton intends to remove Dunguib from the Champion Hurdle at Wednesday's confirmation stage.

However, should Dunguib show the same ability he did when romping away with last term's Weatherbys Champion Bumper, his next race will be the Rabobank Champion Hurdle at Punchestown on April 23.

"If all goes well in the Supreme then the plan is to pitch him in against the big guns at Punchestown," said Fenton. "We scoped him yesterday, as we do each week, and he seemed fine.

"He went to Tipperary last Friday for a final gallop and all went smooth there too, so all is going okay at this stage and he goes to Cheltenham on Saturday."

Unbeaten in four hurdle runs, Dunguib is preparing for a bid to emulate Montelado on March 16 and become the second horse in the Festival's history to land the Champion Bumper and follow up in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle.

Solwhit 'less than 50-50' to make Champion

BY TONY O'HEHIR 2:09PM 9 MAR 2010

CHARLES BYRNES on Tuesday described Solwhit's chances of making the Smurfit Kappa Champion Hurdle line-up as "less than 50-50".

Solwhit's participation in the first day feature at the Cheltenham Festival has been thrown into doubt since he scoped dirty on Monday morning.

Speaking on Tuesday afternoon, Byrnes said: "Solwhit coughed four or five times today. I, more or less, expected thatto be the case, and that he would get worse before he gets better.

"He'd need to stop coughing by Thursday to have any chance of running. We'll see how the next few days go and will scope him again on Saturday when a decision will be made, but I'm not optimistic and I have to say his chances of travelling are less than 50-50 at this stage."

Henderson's trio will have to beat Solwhit on Tuesday, as the Irish runner has been declared a likely runner after recovering from a spell of coughing this week. "He scoped clean earlier this morning so he will travel over tonight but obviously we will be monitoring him closely," said his trainer, Charles Byrnes.

"It was very strange, because he didn't go off his food and looked well in himself, it was just that he was coughing. There was no virus or anything, none of the other horses have coughed, so it really is a bit of a mystery.

"Obviously it is not ideal to have something like this happen so close to the Champion Hurdle but he seems fine now. He'll be monitored on the journey there and when he gets there but the intention is to run and, as long as he's 100%, he will."
