Hes just being general, once-a-year-ers dont tend to back under evens.
I bumped into someone Stephens day on his first time there: "I've a tenner, help me win 50 with it for drink."

Yeah, all those 'professional punters' beting into 140% overrrounds.
Maybe this is one of those rare examples of an RTE presenter talking sh1te.
lots of absolute rot talked about over rounds on this forum, lets be honest plenty of 140% will be made up of 33/1 shots that should be a million as they wont be trying a yard. Plenty of professionals would bet in a race with a 140% overround - especially of they have 70% of it dead

What i cant stand are yellow belly firms like PP who price every Irish race up @ 10am but when you walk into a shop @ 1015 and try to have 1000/400 something you are usually offered 40 quid and the rest SP or SP only in many cases.Next thing the horse in question is 2/1 and everyone thinks it a "mover" LOL

BG is talking about 'professional punters' having five grands here, and ten grands there.
All of us know that bookmakers today simply will not lay a bet of that size to anybody unless he's a mug, and a proven long-term loser.
I opened an account a while back with the firm BG quotes most often. Twice I tried to place a bet to win a grand (nothing cute/no arbs) and both times they would only accept part of the bet. Two knock-backs were enough, and I haven't troubled them since.
To be fair to Brian, he has a job to do. But I take his reports of 'professionals' roaming the irish betting ring, spraying round ten grands at a time, hard to take seriously.

blackwater, are you telling me that you wouldnt back the second in in a maiden hurdle at 5/2 , if you had a reliable negative for the 5/4 fav - even if there was 25 'runners' and the overround was 150%

I take your point, Win Only, irrespective of the O/R it's theoretically possible to find value in a race.
My main objection is to the constant reports on RTE of supposed 'professional punters' getting five-figure bets on, when we all know that has to be b0ll0x.

Depends on the bookie, the horse, the race and a few more things whether or not you'll get thousands on.
For example, no one is going to lay you 5,000 at 25/1 FFS, but a fair amount of bookies will lay you 5,000 at 2/5.
As with everything in life, there is a way around everything, and a way of doing everything.
Davy Hyland will lay you 4,000 or so 2/1 in a Naas maiden. Francis Hyland wouldnt like to lay you 40 (I still like him though). John Stuart wouldnt lay me E/W a 7/2 shot in a 21 runner race, but someone else did.
If one doesnt, try another, and another, and another.. theres always one.

The question came up there at cheltenham 1.40 , 2 horse race, the higher rated horse was 4/9 and led from the front though he possibly didnt want to lead ideally. However listening to C4 a mate of john francomes argued that 4/9 was value on seven is my number. He collected
